    A museum located in Kitaishigaki, Beppu City. The museum has a collection of fragrances from around the world and contains exhibits on fragrances, how they are made, and fragrances from the perspective of their science, history, and culture. There’s also an aroma room and hands-on area where visitors can try mixing fragrances, and museum goers can come in contact with a variety of fragrances. The museum’s shop sells fragrance-related products; an adjoining café serves herbal teas and light meals.

    Come see displays of traditional Oita handiwork and this display center for Beppu Bamboo Works. There are a lot of works on display to appreciate including traditional daily goods and flower baskets as well as modern interior pieces made by skilled traditional craftsmen and even pieces made by Beppu's own formerly Living National Treasure, Shouno Shouunsai. With at least a week's prior reservation you can try your own hand at weaving bamboo into baubles or baskets. At the Museum Shop and Cafe, which opened in 2018, you can purchase bamboo goods or enjoy a coffee or other beverage. The nearest bus stop is Hikarinosono Mae or Takezaiku Densankaikan Mae.

    This small museum shows what can be done with bamboo. Its really beautifully done, with a lot of love for details. And its pretty amazing to see what bamboo artists did or do create from this plant.

    This art museum, a three-minute walk from JR Hiji Station, is the only one in Kyushu and one of only a few in the country to be dedicated to Nihonga Japanese paintings. The museum displays paintings collected by Nikaido Shuzo YK, known for making the Nikaido brand of Oita barley shochus. The museum's collection of Nihonga paintings spans over 850 pieces dating from the early modern period to the present day. The museum's collection includes works by early modern period Nihonga artists such as Tokyo's Taikan Yokoyama and Gyokudo Kawai, and Kyoto's Shoen Uemura; as well as by artists from Oita prefecture. The museum holds five to six special seasonal exhibitions each year.

    元祖むぎ焼酎でお馴染みの酒造店所縁の美術館。「コレクション展４ 桜と春らんまん」を見に行きました。観覧料８００円。現金のみ対応。全国的にも数少ない近代日本画専門の美術館とのこと。多くの作品は撮影可能。麦より芋という筋金入りのクロキリストも御満悦必定です。

    A multipurpose complex situated along Fujimi-dori Street in Yamanote-cho, Beppu City. Facilities include a convention hall able to accommodate up to 8,000 people; an international conference room with equipment for simultaneous interpretation of six languages; Philharmonia Hall, a concert hall and theater able to accommodate about 1,200 people; and reception hall outfitted with a nine face, high vision video system. The complex’ 125-meter tower also serves as an observatory offering a sweeping view of Beppu City.

    Standing among several restaurants, this museum, overseen by the Beppu Onsen Promotional Association, also serves as a tourist information center for Oita. Open to the general public, the museum operates out of the first floor of the home of the director, and prospective visitors must make an appointment before they come. The museum's privately organized collection spans some 5,000 items, all of which are connected to Beppu, including photos and posters from the Meiji through the Showa periods, as well as exhibits on prominent figures.

    別府温泉で有名な竹瓦温泉の裏手の商店街の中に有る個人経営の資料館です。波止場神社にも割と近い場所ですが何分個人宅なので中に入るのに躊躇します。 別府温泉街の栄枯盛衰を個人収集の民族資料で開設した資料館で入場無料です。

    A public hall located in Kamitanoyu-machi, Beppu City. After city’s Central Public Hall and Civic Hall were remodeled and their appearance restored to how they looked when first built in 1928, the collective name of the facility was changed to the “Beppu City Public Hall.” The Central Public Hall is located on the first floor, while the Civic Hall is comprised of a large hall occupying the second and third floor. Visitors can enjoy the atmosphere created by fully restored accoutrements such as the hall’s main stairway, which serves as a symbol of the facility.

    A five-minute walk from JR Yokoku Station, these are the ruins of a castle which belonged to the Kinoshita clan, the hereditary rulers of the bygone Hiji Domain. The castle was built in 1602 by the first Kinoshita lord of Hiji Domain, Kinoshita Nobutoshi. The castle's inner citadel consisted of the castle donjon and turrets scattered about, and this in turn was surrounded by three tiers of defenses - an outer citadel, a further outermost citadel, and an outer wall. Today, only the castle's stone base and ruined moat remain; the surrounding area is maintained as a park. The view of Beppu Bay and Mt. Takasaki visible from the castle ruins is counted as one of the beautiful Eight Views of Beppu, as well as one of the 100 Views of Oita. The sea beneath the inner citadel is known as a habitat for the area's famous brand name Shiroshita Karei marbled sole fish.

    奥まった所で車でナビをしても少し分かりにくかったです。 無料の駐車場は30台以上ありそうでした。 参道から歩いて行くと大きな御神木が2本ありその間をすり抜けて入ると儀式の様な気分がして面白かったです。 小さいカフェもあり良かったです。

    旧大分県施設を簡易改装してオープンした別府市美術館。展示スペースが会議室にパテーションを取り付けただけという、残念なもの。改装予算がなく、暫定的なものだと思うけれど、絵画や美術品がかわいそうな気がする。まあ、逆に考えると市民の作品を展示したりするには、敷居が高くなくてよいのかな？

    키지마 고원에 있는 사찰입니다. 이곳은 수양 벚나무가 유명합니다. 5개의 대형 벚나무가 보입니다. 2월이나 보니 사늘한 가지만 있네요. 벚꽃이 만개하면 정말 환상적일듯 합니다. 4월 말 정도 쯤 오시면 될듯 하네요. 오늘 4월에 다시 와야 겠습니다.

    鉄輪温泉を開湯した一遍上人ゆかりのお寺。仏教では病気は殺生の報いによって起こるとされていたので、一遍上人は蒸し風呂に入って、南無阿無陀仏の称号を唱えて病気を治すことを奨励しました。 昔は温泉はつかるものではなく、蒸し風呂に入るというのが一般的だったのですね。その蒸し湯は公営の浴場として現在も永福治の近くで運営されています。 それほど大きな寺というわけではなく、道路に面していきなりお堂が見えます...

    ４月３０日は、日豊本線の暘谷駅（ようこくえき）まで移動し、 滝家のお墓や、天然記念物の大きな蘇鉄を見学しました。 蘇鉄はそれはそれは見事なものでした。 曲がった幹（幹というのかわかりませんが）支える土台、 力強い生き様、見事でした。滝家のお墓は、５０ｍ手前の龍泉寺にありました。 瀧家は由緒ある家柄だったんですね。

    ここの前の駐車場に車を停めてしばらく城址界隈を散策しました。最初にここにはいったのですが、受付にいたスタッフのおじさんが詳しく、ここの内部だけでなく鬼門櫓の中も解説してくれました。「この史料館は新しいので展示も少なくて」と恐縮しながら話してくれたのですが、興味深い解説をしてもらえたのでよかったです。入場無料です。

    曹洞宗の寺院でもある海門寺。現在の本堂は万延元年、つまり１８６０年に再建された歴史ある寺院だ。この寺院の見所は何といってもしだれ松だろう。黒松が垂れ下がった姿は威風を感じさせる

    血の池地獄、竜巻地獄から徒歩ですぐ。近いところに駐車場もある。竜巻温泉を独自の方法で水で薄めることなく温度が下げて入浴を可能しているそうだ。 長泉寺の庭先にあるほったて小屋のような中に浴槽がある。四-五人は一緒に入れるくらいの湯船。さほど温度は高くないので気持ちよく入れるだろう。脱衣用の棚はあるが洗い場はない…というか基本頭や身体を洗うような入浴を行う場所ではないな。ひと組ずつ入浴するようになって...

    二層の楼門が特に立派です。元禄16年(1703年)、日出藩三代藩主・木下俊長が建立寄進したものです。12月初旬の平日に観光タクシーで訪れました。町中に人がいない割に、地元の方が楼門下の階段に座っておしゃべりをされていたり、観光客が数名参拝されていたりと、海に近いせいか明るく開かれている印象の神社です。

A trip to Oita is tantamount to a long soak in the Beppu baths.
