Approximately a three-minute walk from the Takasakiyama bus stop, this zoo is located at the foot of Mt. Takasaki, with a distinctive shape reminiscent of a bell-shape. It is believed that wild monkeys lived in the area since at least around 1698 because of their description in documents from that time. The mayor of Oita City thought it could be used as a tourism resource and to prevent damage to agricultural crops in 1952, so they began to get gathered up with bait. There are currently two groups that have a total of 1,000 monkeys. In addition to being able to watch friendly monkeys up close, the potato feeding that happens twice a day is a must-see.

Know that this zoo is up a mountain; however, they offer a tram to take you if you prefer not to walk up the mountain. They have signs not to bring food, and to watch your items. The monkeys can...

The facility operates out of a remodeled residence which once belonged to the Hoashi family, who built their fortune through sake brewing. The old residence' roughly 6,600 square meter grounds are dotted with structures built between the mid-Edo period and the early Showa period. The main residence and an additional detached building are used as galleries displaying and selling clothing crafted with an emphasis on the materials used, ceramics, and lifestyle good such as environmentally conscious items. There are also seven other facilities on the grounds: A cafe, restaurant, confectionary shop, souvenir shop, free-use space, sake brewery with a museum, and garden. (Note that the cafe is currently closed due to renovations.)

"A 10-minute drive from JR Oita Station and a 15-minute drive from the Oita Interchange on the Oita Expressway. This seaside park is located right next to the Tanoura bus stop. The park has been designated a ""Lover's Sanctuary"" by the Japan Tourism Agency-backed Lover's Sanctuary Project NPO. If you look closely, you can find heart-shaped stones in the stone wall of the park's small chapel building. In most years, swimming at the beach is permitted from early July through late August, but be aware that the hours when the beach is open may differ occasionally during this period. One of the great things about the park is the efforts that have been made to ensure as many people as possible can enjoy themselves here. For example, the park has off road wheelchairs available. During the two month span it is open, the beach sees around 60 thousand visitors."

Oita Areas

around-area-map

A trip to Oita is tantamount to a long soak in the Beppu baths. The mountainous, coastal prefecture of Oita is renowned for having more onsen than any other prefecture in Japan, most of which lie in the city of Beppu on the west coast of Kyushu, recognizable by its pungent sulphuric aroma and the clouds of steam that puff up across the hillside. Away from the Beppu hot springs await mountains, waterfalls, and temples, so don’t hesitate to explore Oita a little further.
