Umi Jigoku boasts of being the largest among the Beppu Jigoku hot springs. The beautiful cobalt blue color is due to iron sulphate in the hot spring water. Royal water lilies and tropical water lilies are cultivated using the heat from the hot spring and the flowers will be at their best from early May until early November. At the Bon Festival event, lower grade elementary school children (up to 20 kilograms) can get on the leaves of the royal water lilies that float in the pond. There is also a footbath. The hot spring has been designated as a National Place of Scenic Beauty.

The highlight of this place is a giant hot spring where you cannot go in and take a bath. You can tell it's really hot so don't try it. However, there are some smaller hot spring towards the left...

As the name says, this is a bright red hot spring which brims with hell. The pond itself is quite large with a depth of more than 30 meters and a width of 1,300 square meters, and the appearance of the steam rising up is a spectacle. Red hot mud which contains such metals as iron oxide and magnesium oxide from the stratum jet out and deposit, resulting in the pond gets dyed red due to the deposited material. There is an adjoining restaurant where you can taste the Beppu specialty of steaming hell and Oita’s local cuisine. There is also a footbath. The hot spring has been designated as a National Place of Scenic Beauty.

I think in size the biggest of all seven hells. The location is well kept and absolutely worth your visit. You can walk all around this hell completely and have a great overview from above on the...

For over a thousand years, the gasses, hot mud, and boiling waters erupting from beneath the area from Kanawa to Kamegawa have led it to being called the Jigoku (Hells) of Beppu. In 2009, four hot springs, Umi (Sea) Jigoku, Chinoike (Blood Pond) Jigoku, Tatsumaki Jigoku, and Shiraike (White Pond) Jigoku were designated as National Places of Scenic Beauty. Visiting these four hot springs in addition to three other famous ones is fun and enjoyable. In addition to hot spring eggs (slow boiled in hot spring waters), hell-themed souvenirs such as Chinoike ointment, and Enman no Yu (bath salts) are popular to take home and give to friends. A 15-minute drive by car from JR Beppu Station.

There are 7 Hells - 5 within walking distance of each other and 2 are a short drive away. Entrance fee to each Hell is 400¥ and you can get a discounted ticket for all 7 Hells for 2000¥. We managed...

  • Shiraike Jigoku
    Accommodations / Hot Spring
    Oita Pref. Beppushi Kannawa 283-1
A feature of Shiraike Jigoku is its slightly bluish white spring water. When the water gushes from the ground, it is transparent; but when it falls into the pond, its color changes due to the decrease in temperature and pressure. The circumference of the pond is surrounded by small Japanese gardens, and there is a statue of the Saint Ippen Shonin who is considered to have laid the foundation for Beppu’s hot spring district. Also, at the tropical fish aquarium located at the back of the grounds, piranha from the Amazon are bred. The hot spring has been designated as a National Place of Scenic Beauty.

The name comes from when they used the steam of the spring water to cook rice as an offering on the occasion of the grand festival of the shrine god, Kamado Hachimangu Shrine. There are six types of hot spring on the grounds and as each have different characteristics such as color, etc. they have been classified into ranks from one to six to make them user friendly. Experience-based facilities are also a feature of this hot spring, such as the demonstrations to increase steam, the high temperature throat and skin steam and the foot bath.

In 1923, for the first time in Japan, the breeding of crocodiles was started which used the heat from a hot spring—the place is also referred to as “Crocodile Hell”. There are a number of crocodile breeding areas surrounding the Jigoku pond, and the number of crocodiles kept there is roughly 70. At the weekend, there is also an event where a member of staff gives food to the crocodiles, so you can observe the exciting moment when the crocodiles are fed.

A feature of this hot spring is the thick steam which spews through the rock surface of the mountain. Also, the temperature of the water vapor is put to practical use with the breeding of animals such as hippopotamus, llamas and flamingos, so there are also some people who visit here for the small zoological gardens.

A low-cost public hot spring facility operated by Beppu City. Originally erected in 1879, the current building was built in 1938. In the spa’s famous sand bath, visitors lie down in sand wearing a yukata robe, after which assistants cover you with sand heated by the site’s natural hot spring. Up to eight persons can use the sand bath at the same time. Wait times may grow long when the facility is busy. A 10-minute walk from JR Beppu Station.

Experience a sand bath - very different & very relaxing. The entire experience takes about 45 minutes (pre-bath shower; sand bath; after-bath shower; hot water spa).

This traditional low cost public path is open 24 hours a day and is distinguished by its old fashioned, Taisho period Western-style green roof. The bathhouse has two types of baths—a lukewarm bath, and a very hot bath; the waters of both are distinctly thick and colorless. The waters are said to soothe women’s health issues, gastrointestinal disorders, and nerve pain. The facility also has seven private lodging rooms on the second floor and a large common lodging space for groups. Parking available. A two-minute walk from JR Beppu Station.

Beppu Ekinae Koto Onsen is a nostalgic public bath. The entrance cost about $1.80, and you buy the ticket from a vending machine. At that time, you can choose either "hot" bath or "warm" bath. I...

Visitors to this municipal hot spring facility can enjoy a steam bath which involves wearing a robe and lying in a stone hut blanketed with medicinal plants as hot spring steam warms their entire body. The facility was remodeled in 2006 but its history is ancient, having been established by the Buddhist priest Ippen in 1276 and thereafter coming to be known as a health spa. The facility also features an indoor bath where you can wash away the sweat from the steam bath, and an outdoor foot bath which is free to all.

Said to have once been visited by the great Buddhist priest Kukai, this hot spring facility’s waters come from the Konya Jigoku (“Konya Hell”) hot spring source. In the facility’s wildly popular mud bath, you can enjoy a natural mud pack soaking your skin in the rich mud from the bottom of the cloudy waters of the spring. The facility features two mud bath types – a pair of separate indoor ones for men and women, and a mixed-sex outdoor bath. The mud baths and hot spring waters are said to aid in easing rheumatism, diabetes, atopy, athlete’s foot, and hernias. The nearest bus stop is Konya Jigoku-mae.

A small cooperative hot spring facility with a thatched roof located on the shores of Lake Kinrin in the Yufuin area. The facility has both an indoor bath and semi-open air bath; the indoor bath is particularly hot. The baths are constantly replenished from a natural hot spring source and are equipped with taps for adding cooler water to adjust the temperature. The bathhouse’s facilities are mixed-sex, including even the changing rooms; the water is also clear and colorless, demanding quite a bit of courage from women bathers. A 20-minute walk from JR Yufuin Station.

This municipal-run large scale hot spring facility opened in 1998, allowing one to enjoy various types of hot springs including outdoor, steam, waterfall showers, and bucket showers. Unusual even in Beppu, there is also an outdoor area where bathing suits are worn, and in this free atmosphere one can relax and bathe while looking out over Beppu Bay and Mt. Takasaki. Don’t fear going there empty handed as both towels and bathing suits are available to rent.

    Oita Beppushi-shi
One of the eight most well-known hot spring districts in Beppu City known as the Beppu Hatto. Takegawara Onsen, a hot spring bathhouse with a gorgeous Chinese-style gabled roof which serves a symbol of Beppu Onsen, is located here. The district is famous for its sand baths, which involve visitors lying down in sand wearing a yukata robe and being covered by sand heated by the site's natural hot spring waters. Noted in the Iyo no kuni fudoki, an ancient chronicle of the area, this history-leaden hot spring resort only truly entered the limelight starting in the Edo period. The Beppu Hatto Onsen Festival is held primarily in Beppu Onsen each year in April and its biggest attraction is a huge parade called Yu-Bukkake festival in which participants and onlookers are splashed with over 40 tons of local hot spring water.

The resort of Beppu was a disappointment for us as it was the only dirty town in our 3-week holiday in Japan. It had lots of litter in the streets and an unkempt beach and beach front. The hot...

  • Kannawa Onsen
    Accommodations / Hot Spring
    Oita Beppushi-shi
A hot spring district known for the plumes of steam which rise up from the ground throughout its borders; the picturesque scenery this creates serves as a symbol of Beppu. Many of the famous Hells of Beppu (visually stunning hot springs which are meant to be viewed rather than bathed in) are located in this district, and the waters are famously described with the poetic phrase, 1,000 ryo (old coin) worth of hot water gush forth in a single night. The Bungo fudoki, an ancient record of the region compiled in the early Nara period, notes that much steam, boiling water, and hot mud emerges from the ground in this area; called a Hell since ancient times, it is believed the land here was long abhorred and feared. In the Kamakura period, after the great priest Ippen founded the Mushiyu bathhouse, many public bathhouses and ryokan inns came to be built one next to the other in the area. Even today, the places where hot spring waters emerge from the ground continue to generate an abundance of steam and are called Hells in the area. This hot spring district is perhaps the most celebrated and well-known of all those in Beppu.

Oita Main Areas

around-area-map

A trip to Oita is tantamount to a long soak in the Beppu baths. The mountainous, coastal prefecture of Oita is renowned for having more onsen than any other prefecture in Japan, most of which lie in the city of Beppu on the west coast of Kyushu, recognizable by its pungent sulphuric aroma and the clouds of steam that puff up across the hillside. Away from the Beppu hot springs await mountains, waterfalls, and temples, so don’t hesitate to explore Oita a little further.
