Situated on a lush, green hill, the museum has a walking course on the hill's vast grass-covered plain called ""Picture Book Lane."" Inside, visitors are greeted by Jake, a dog appearing in Yoh's books; as well as Blue Bee, the blue bee who brings happiness. Visitors are encouraged to enjoy a wonderful tea time in the museum's cafe. The museum also holds original drawing exhibitions. The museum's shop sells a variety of items perfect for gifts and souvenirs, including stuffed animals, picture books, framed pictures, and prints."

"The world's only theater dedicated to ""saru mawashi,"" a type of monkey show with a long history in Japan. The theater can accommodate 600 people and holds funny and heartwarming shows 365 days a year. Performances include handstands, walking on stilts, and even bicycle riding. The cuteness of the monkeys bring smiles to the faces of the audience and draws viewers into the performance before they know it. The theater is situated in a naturally beautiful area at the foot of Mt. Aso and inside visitors can enjoy the light banter between the monkeys and their trainers. Another great thing about the theater is that it offers subtitled translations in three languages and the theater fully incorporates universal design principles. The large theater grounds also encompass a monkey zoo where visitors can interact with monkeys, a shop selling original merchandise, and a self-service diner."

This is a one-hour drive course that connects Yufuin in the north and Kumamoto Prefecture’s Aso-gun Minami Oguni-machi Town in the south, selected as one of Japan’s greatest 100 mountain range roads. There are spots where one can enjoy views of the Kuju Mountain Range, hot springs, and Kogen gourmet food. There are many spots where one can feel close to the mountains such as the Tadewara Wetlands which formed from springs at the base of mountains in the Kyushu volcanic group and Yamanami Farm. Coming from the direction of Fukuoka/Oita, get off the Oita Expressway at “Yufuin IC” and take National Road 210, then enter the Yamanami Highway.
  • Nabegataki Falls
    Travel / Tourism
    Kumamoto Pref. Asogunogunimachi Kurobuchi
This is a waterfall which is said to have been made by an eruption which occurred about 90,000 years ago, which also created Aso’s caldera lake. This is a small waterfall with a height of about 10 meters and a width of about 20 meters, but the appearance of sunlight shining through the curtain-like broadly cascading water is extremely beautiful. “Urami no taki” which is enjoying the waterfall by going around to the other side of the fall is also popular. An event is also held in the springtime in which the far side of the waterfall is illuminated.

"This large local specialty products market's name is derived from the Japanese phrase ""kiyoraka ni utsukushi"" (clean/excellent and beautiful) and that Latin word for home/building. The pyramidal market building stands along National Route 212 and embodies the desire to aim for the realization of a town with a clean environment, excellent goods, and excellent people via the work and involvement of everyone living in the community. The market sells fresh vegetables, Japanese pickles, dried foods, milk, yogurt, and much more. There's also an adjoining souvenir area and a restaurant which serves cuisine made with beef and maitake mushrooms, local town specialty products, making this the perfect place for those enjoying a scenic drive in the area to take a break."

    Oita Taketa-shi
"A waterfall located in Hinatame, Ogi-machi, Taketa City. Situated along the Ono River, the waterfall's name means ""white water,"" and there are two theories as to how it got this name. One is that it is because the waterfall appears white due to its numerous streams; the other is that because it is comprised of 99 streams, its name was written with the character for ""100"" minus a line at the top representing ""one,"" resulting in the character for ""white."""

This hot spring hotel is located below Kurokawa Onsen, part of Minamioguni Town, Aso County. It's a great place for a relaxing soak while gazing at the seasonal scenery. They have an open-air bath with a view of the nearby Byobu-Iwa cliffs and three different reservable private baths. They welcome people dropping in to use the baths as well as guests who spend the night.

Shiraito Falls, where water drops in a single stream from 20 meters high, is so named as the flow looks like a white thread, or “shiraito.” The beautiful, clear water has been selected as one of Kumamoto Prefecture’s top 100 waters of the Heisei era.  In the summer season illuminations are held until 10pm, and at the nearby Shiraito Falls Exchange Center one can enjoy somen nagashi (flowing somen).

This art museum is located in the Kurobuchi area of Oguni Town, Aso County. It houses and exhibits works by the Oguni-machi-born abstract artist Zenzo Sakamoto. The exhibition facility consisting of a relocated kominka (old house) is the only one with tatami mats covering the entire interior in Japan, and you can enjoy watching works while sitting on tatami. There are also adjoining facilities such as a museum shop, break room and rental space.

This shrine is located in Takamori Town, Aso County. There's a large rock formation on the grounds with a gaping hole passing through it called the Ugeto Iwa. Legend says a Shinto deity kicked the cavity open. As making a hole in rock isn't so easy, it's thought worshiping there brings success and victory. The shrine's sacred Nagi trees are said to bring blessings too. As the leaves are tough to pull off, it's thought they will give spousal relationships longevity. The approach to the shine is lined with nearly 100 lanterns.

"A gorge situated along the upper reaches of the Gokase River. This gorge is famous for its ""U"" shape, a rarity in Japan. The gorge's precipitous walls, carved out via erosion, are some 200 meters tall and extend across a 10 kilometer stretch of the river. If you visit the Cape Nagasakibana Observatory and look down on the gorge, you can take in a view of the Gokase River weaving its way through the gorge bottom as well as the seasonal scenery of the so-called ""Grand Canyon of Kyushu."" Particularly from late October to early November, the area's fall foliage is stunning. The Soyo Gorge fall foliage festival, usually held in mid-November, is quite popular."

On holidays and in sightseeing seasons, visitors form a long line even before opening.
  • Mt. Aso Nakadake
    Travel / Tourism
    Kumamoto Pref. Asoshi Ichinomiyamachimiyaji
One of the peaks which make up Mt. Aso, it is 1,506 meters high. Situated in the almost exact center of the central group of volcanic cones, this peak is the most active of the volcanos of Aso. Its craters are numbered one through seven, and there is a caldera lake - a crater in which rainwater and spring water has accumulated - known as Yudamari. Access to the lake area may be restricted at times due to the emission of volcanic gasses.
