This is a regional restaurant located in a quiet wooded area located a five-minute walk from Takamori Station. Traditional Dengaku cuisine can be enjoyed in an old thatched-roof house built 200 years ago. A special characteristic of dengaku grilled in front of you robata-yaki style is that you can taste it with various types of miso including yuzu (citrus) miso, Japanese pepper miso, and chicken miso, etc. To finish the meal, fragrant Dengaku-miso grilled rice balls are recommended.

This is one of the highlights so far on our second trip to Japan. The restaurant is set in a traditional house with charcoals at each table and fresh meat and fish to eat. The service is great...

This restaurant in Takamori-machi, Aso County serves regional cuisine. It's a great place to try authentic Takamori dengaku, skewers made with salt grilled yamame salmon, tofu, konnyaku gelatin, taro, and seasonal wild vegetables smothered in a special miso sauce and cooked over a charcoal fire. You'll love eating this local favorite while chatting around the restaurant's traditional hearth. Their Takamori dengaku multi-course meal comes with fried bean curd, wild vegetable and dango dumpling soup, and tokibi rice.

Super friendly English speaking owner who welcomed us warmly. An authentic traditional barbecue which you cook yourself. An English menu and some set courses. The owner explains how to cook things...

This restaurant in Aso City serves local cuisine. Their yakiniku Japanese barbecue and country cooking are made with Aso meat and produce they raise themselves. The Aka beef for their yakiniku is light and little extra fat. The rice is home-grown, and the seasonal pickled vegetables are all homemade too. It's a great spot for a relaxing meal while gazing at the mountains of Aso.

The restaurant is along route 149 and easily accessible by car. There are enough parking spaces outside the restaurant. Nice family run restaurant that serve only beef BBQ. We ordered 6 beef sets...

It offers a menu of local dishes such as sukiyaki rice bowls with Aso's ""Aka beef,"" horse sashimi and Dango-jiru (dumpling soup), set meals using local ingredients, noodles, rice bowls and sweets."

    ドライブの途中で立ち寄りました。 熊本名物のあかうしを頂けました。美味しかったです。定食系のメニューが豊富なので、いろいろ試してみたくなります。

A yakiniku Japanese-style grill-it-yourself barbecue restaurant adjoining a roadside station located at the foot of Mt. Aso. Taking pride in its use of Aka beef, a local specialty product raised on the abundant grasslands of southern Aso, here customers can enjoy tender, lean, flavorful meat. This meat is particularly popular with women because it has just the right amount of fat and doesn't make you feel heavy even after eating a lot of it. The restaurant's floor-to-ceiling windows provide diners with a panoramic view of the naturally beautiful Aso area, and the scenery created by the outer crater rim and mountain foot is quite popular. The sight of the famous Isshingyo Sakura Tree in full bloom in spring is also stunning. In the restaurant's meat shop, you can purchase meat to take home with you.

"This restaurant is located close to Takamori Station, known as the departure station for Minamiaso Railway's torokko train ""Yusuge-go."" The restaurant operates out of remodeled old Japanese home with eye-catching hand-carved transoms and knot-free alcove post. Surrounded by the restaurant's elegant atmosphere, customers can enjoy choice traditional kaiseki course cuisine made with local edible wild plants and vegetables, dengaku roasted dishes, tempura, and shinjo fish cakes. In addition to the food itself, the restaurant pays fastidious attention to the tableware and atmosphere. The restaurant becomes particularly busy on weekends and prospective customers are encouraged to make an advance reservation before visiting."

    Kumamoto Aso-gun Minamiasomura Kain 3717-1
This restaurant is located on the way from Mt. Tawara to Takamori. A certified local production for local consumption establishment, the restaurant serves local cuisine using an abundance of homemade and local ingredients. Enclosed in the restaurant's relaxing, old-fashioned atmosphere, the dengaku roasted dishes, eaten after being slow-broiled over the fire of an irori sunken hearth, have an exceptional flavor. Here customers can enjoy a view of the seasonal scenery of Mt. Yomine along with the tastes of Aso, such as the Sansui Dengaku Course, which comes with sides; dagojiru soup; and seven varieties of dengaku skewers, including local chicken, yamame trout, tofu, and vegetables.

    囲炉裏があり、天井の高くよい雰囲気です。夕食に地鶏飯をいただきました。定食もあるのですが、定食が割高に感じてしまい、単品で。あっさりとしていて、おいしくいただけました。

The old-fashioned air of the bygone Showa era hangs around this Japanese restaurant located in Minamiaso Village. The restaurant serves cuisine made with fresh Higo beef and horsemeat, such as a Japanese-style curry made with Higo beef sirloin grilled over a charcoal fire; as well as a local traditional chicken breed set meal made only with meat from chickens no older than three months. The luxurious Kura Teishoku set meal, the most popular item on the menu, gives you the chance to enjoy fresh, charcoal grilled Japanese black beef, local traditional chicken breed meat, and horsemeat, all in one meal. The filling meal also comes with rice, dagojiru soup, and sides. For an added fee, you can change your rice to mustard leaf rice, a dish eaten in the Aso area since ancient times.

This tofu restaurant is located in Kurokawa Onsen in Minamioguni Town. Enclosed in the restaurant's relaxing atmosphere and situated near its sunken irori hearth, you can enjoy cuisine made with simple yet highly nutritious tofu at reasonable prices. The Tofu Teishoku Ume set meal is particularly popular; created using handmade tofu and konnyaku yam cake, the meal consists of dishes which locals have eaten in the region since ancient times on formal days and during Buddhist memorial services. Also great is the fact that you can get free rice and tofu refills. The restaurant's popular tofu soft serve ice cream is made using a mix of botanical ingredients and tofu, giving it a light, refreshing flavor. The restaurant's thick atsuage and Kisshoage deep fried tofu are available for takeout if you ask.

Nice athmosphere. Some of the tofus where very good. For lunch just one or two plates are enough. If you only like hot tofu dishes, remember to ask for them. The ”sushi” is obviously not sushi, but...

    Kumamoto Aso-gun Minamiogunimachi Kurokawa Onsen
Located in Kurokawa Onsen, this Japanese yam cuisine restaurant boasts an irori sunken hearth and a soothing atmosphere. The restaurant serves traditional Minamioguni Town cuisine which leverages the innate flavors of the ingredients used, such as dagojiru soup with dumplings made from grated Japanese yam; and chicken soup, a dish usually eaten on special occasions. All of the restaurant's Japanese yam and rice were diligently grown by the owner. The restaurant takes tastes which convey the history and culture of this rural area and brings them into the present while also passing them on to the future.

Things seem to have changed since these reviews from 2019. Rice and yams are good! The meat, however, was a disgrace for an area that prizes good meat. The pork was obviously frozen, and the beef...

    Kumamoto Aso-shi Kurokawa 1303-2
This local cuisine restaurant is situated on the north side of Aso Station. The restaurant serves dishes made with beef from cows diligently raised by the owner. Dedicated to the concept of neither creating nor serving anything which the owner would not serve to his own grandchildren, almost all of the restaurant's ingredients are produced on his own farm, including the flavorful, highly nutritious beef; chicken, vegetables; and rice. The restaurant also avoids making use of advanced preparation as much as possible and prepares food one dish at a time to order, ensuring customers can enjoy the flavor of truly fresh-made cuisine.
