This ancient Buddhist temple is known as the birthplace of Koen, the master of Honen, founder of the Jodo school of Buddhism. Its colorful five-story wooden pagoda and the Great South Gate are well known. The temple was burned during battle in 1582 but was restored by the priest Zeshin Kawahara in 1929. A two-storied pagoda was rebuilt in 2018.

    行事ごとや初詣などの時にはたくさんの参拝客の姿がありますが、私が行った時にはとても静かな場所でゆっくりと自然を感じながら参拝することができました。

Okunoin was built in 1978 to commemorate 800 years since the passing of the Buddhist priest Koen. Originally, it was a training hall for Buddhist priests, but today many patrons visit to improve their luck and ward off misfortune.

Kumamoto Areas

around-area-map

Kumamoto lies in the center of Kyushu, a calm prefecture perfect for easy strolls around the historic center and lazy evenings in the natural hot springs at Kurokawa Onsen. For a slightly more strenuous activity, head to Mount Aso, whose surrounding hills offer hiking opportunities aplenty with views over the active volcano.
