This museum looks at Tamana and how it has grown alongside its major river. In addition to a standing exhibition and special exhibitions, the museum holds educational activities such as making ancient magatama stone jewels, and a museum quiz rally (in general, such activities require an advance reservation for a group of 10 or more people). The museum's standing exhibition is divided into three parts - the golden age of the Heki clan (ancient times), the age of overseas trade (medieval times), and the age of cargo vessels and the Takase Okura - and visitors can learn how modern-day Tamana City came to be from a variety of angles. The museum can be identified by its 16 huge display towers on the roof.

    大河ドラマ韋駄天の主人公ということで金栗四三展をやっていました。展示内容もよかったですが建物の形にかなり特徴のある建物です。

  • Jagatani Park

    Kumamoto Pref. Tamanashi Ryuganji 1598-1
A 210 thousand square meter park. In addition to a baseball field and tennis courts, the park has an observatory with a sweeping view of the Ariake Sea, a large children's playground with a variety of equipment, and a large natural grass lawn. The playground equipment includes everything from spring rides to huge playsets, and the park bustles with families and their children on weekends. In spring, some 5,000 cherry trees come into beautiful bloom on the grounds, creating stunning scenery during the blooming season from late March to early April. The park is also a renowned destination for azalea viewing.

This mikan orange farm has been in operation for over 100 years. The farm cultivates some 2,500 mikan trees on its vast grounds utilizing organic, low agrichemical agriculture and without the use of any herbicides. The farm's navel and mikan oranges are of such high quality, they have been selected to be officially given as gifts to the imperial household since the Meiji period. In most years, the farm offers all-you-can-eat mikan orange picking from late September to early December. The farm also sells mikan orange soft serve ice cream made by blending frozen mikan oranges with vanilla ice cream, and machine- or hand-squeezed mikan orange juice.

Kumamoto Areas

around-area-map

Kumamoto lies in the center of Kyushu, a calm prefecture perfect for easy strolls around the historic center and lazy evenings in the natural hot springs at Kurokawa Onsen. For a slightly more strenuous activity, head to Mount Aso, whose surrounding hills offer hiking opportunities aplenty with views over the active volcano.
