  • Kiyomizu-no-taki Waterfall

    Saga Pref. Ogishi Ogimachimatsuo
"Located around 25 minutes' drive from the Saga Yamato Interchange on the Nagasaki Expressway, Kiyomizu-no-taki Waterfall on the upper reaches of Kiyomizu River has been included in the list of ""100 Most Beautiful Rivers, Springs and Waterfalls in Japan."" The impressive sight of the 13 meter-wide stream of clear water crashing down from a height of 75 meters led to the waterfall being given the alternative name Tamasudare (""Beaded Screen""). Kiyomizu-no-taki Waterfall has since ancient times been associated with the worship of Kannon, the Buddhist goddess of mercy, and Kiyomizu Kannon Hochi-in Temple located at the outlet of the waterfall's plunge pool is famous as a sacred spot for meditating by a waterfall. The area near the waterfall is known as the ""retreat"" of the city of Ogi, and has many restaurants serving carp dishes, which are a famous local specialty; in the summer months, many people visit the waterfall and the surrounding area to escape the oppressive summer heat. In the autumn, the autumn foliage gives the area near the waterfall a different but equally beautiful appearance."

Saga Areas

around-area-map

Away from the fast-paced cities of mainland Japan, Kyushu’s Saga prefecture offers quaint towns and cities known for their traditional crafts, particularly ceramics. Rich in kaolin (a type of clay), Saga became the homeland of Arita ware, a delicate, decorative porcelain that is now celebrated worldwide and can be discovered in the towns of Arita, Imari, and Karatsu.
