The impressive sight of the 13 meter-wide stream of clear water crashing down from a height of 75 meters led to the waterfall being given the alternative name Tamasudare (""Beaded Screen""). Kiyomizu-no-taki Waterfall has since ancient times been associated with the worship of Kannon, the Buddhist goddess of mercy, and Kiyomizu Kannon Hochi-in Temple located at the outlet of the waterfall's plunge pool is famous as a sacred spot for meditating by a waterfall. The area near the waterfall is known as the ""retreat"" of the city of Ogi, and has many restaurants serving carp dishes, which are a famous local specialty; in the summer months, many people visit the waterfall and the surrounding area to escape the oppressive summer heat.
