"A Buddhist temple located in Sonobe, Kiyama Town, Miyaki County, Saga Prefecture. The temple was founded by the priest Gyoki in 717. Temple treasures include a wooden, eleven headed statue of the goddess Kannon created by Gyoki; the temple's principal object of worship. it is only revealed to the public once every twelve years. There's also a wooden standing statue of Vaisravana and of Virupaksa which are designated National Important Cultural Properties. Also known as the ""Azalea Temple,"" each year in spring some 50 thousand azalea plants come into bloom on the mountain behind the temple, and its grounds are also a renowned destination for fall foliage viewing."

We came to see autumn foliage and there is plenty of it here. 127 steep steps take you up to the temple. We had to wait a while at the bottom to be able to take a photo with no people on the...

"A Shinto shrine located in Shirakabe, Miyaki Town, Miyaki County, Saga Prefecture. Records state the shrine was founded in 724. During the Okayu Dameshi fortune telling event (popularly known as ""Okai-san"") held each year on March 15, a bowl of okayu rice porridge made on February 26 and offered to the gods is made viewable to the public; the pattern of mold on the porridge is said to predict whether the future brings good luck or bad luck, rich harvests or disasters, and the festival is considered one of the three great okayu rice porridge festivals of Japan."

This museum is in Tosu City, Saga Prefecture, and was built in 1995 to commemorate the 145th anniversary of the founding of Hisamitsu Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd, as Tashiro Baiyaku. This museum is dedicated to pharmaceutical and medical history, and stands out for its two story building, designed by an Italian sculptor. Its displays include a recreation of the end of the 19th century British pharmacy, and materials from Tashiro Baiyaku.

"The birthplace of Kohito Shimomura, known as the author of ""The Tale of Jiro,"" was built in the early Meiji period (1868-1912), and he spent his childhood in this house, which was acquired and restored by the Kohito Shimomura Preservation Society in 1970 to preserve it as an important cultural property of Kanzaki City. The house is also a place for elementary and junior high school students to interact with each other."

A facility with a Niiyama waterwheel reminiscent of days gone by that was restored in 1995. In the Meiji era, there were more than 60 waterwheels in the Niiyama area utilizing the headwaters of the Jobaru River. It's said the area bustled during that time with carpenters and operators of waterwheels and young farmers from the plains with wagons loaded with wheat. The hall's displays include waterwheel related items and waterwheel powered marionettes performing the Ondamai dance from Niiyama-jinja Shrine.

Saga Areas

around-area-map

Away from the fast-paced cities of mainland Japan, Kyushu’s Saga prefecture offers quaint towns and cities known for their traditional crafts, particularly ceramics. Rich in kaolin (a type of clay), Saga became the homeland of Arita ware, a delicate, decorative porcelain that is now celebrated worldwide and can be discovered in the towns of Arita, Imari, and Karatsu.
