A cultural facility consisting of a restored suburban villa located close to Kokura Castle in Kokurakita Ward in Kitakyushu City. There is a tatami mat room which can be used for tea ceremony sessions as well as a Japanese style room with Japanese style seats where visitors can enjoy matcha powdered green tea. The garden itself, a pond strolling garden, offers visitors beautiful, seasonal scenery.

As Japanese gardens go, this one is such a disappointment. It is very small, its only notable feature is the pond, and it is sadly uncared for. They have a nerve to charge for admission when they do...

Here at the TOTO Museum you can learn about the roots and history of TOTO Ltd. who played a role in Japan's modernization. Along with the culture and history surrounding plumbing from their founding to the present day you can see their thoughts behind the creation and evolution of their products. There are almost 1,000 displays to see and along with goods on display including toilets, baths, faucets, and Japan's first unit bathroom (according to JIS regulations), there is also a toilet for sumo wrestlers that you can actually sit on to compare the size and new products that are only sold overseas.

Fabulous museum. Very well signed in English. Kids will enjoy it also. The information is fascinating and funny. Worth a stop. You do not need a special tour guide.

Inside the cave the temperature remains a steady 16°C throughout the year and can be enjoyed by any age group. The dozens of stalactites large and small hanging at the entrance is a must-see.

This castle was constructed by Hosokawa Tadaoki over a period of seven years starting in 1602. A characteristic of this castle is the large castle keep built in Kara-zukuri style where the fifth floor is larger than the fourth floor, and there are no roof eaves between the fourth floor and fifth floor. The stone walls, in a style known as Nozura-tsumi because they do not use any hewn stone, are a must-see. Inside the castle is a history zone with a diorama that is a model of the castle-town, and the castle keep has an observation zone that offers a 360-degree view of Kokura’s townscape. The castle grounds are a famous spot for hanami cherry blossom viewing parties when the approximately 300 cherry trees are in bloom.

As a base for trade with the continent, it is said that close to 200 foreign passenger boats entered the port every month in its golden age, and it was full of shops belonging to maritime companies, trading companies, and shops for overseas travelers. In addition to those buildings which evoke a nostalgic atmosphere, the Mojiko Retro Area has become an urban sight-seeing area with new art galleries and commercial facilities. Visitors can fully savor the romantic ambience of Japan’s old Taisho period with a mix of Japanese and Western influences.
