    This public City Museum is near both Fukuoka Tower and the Fukuoka Dome. On display are historical materials that are closely related to both Fukuoka and Hakata. The King of Na gold seal, a National Treasure of Japan, made from real gold, is continuously on display inside of a case. There are numerous masterpieces on display that were donated by the Kuroda Family, former Lords of Fukuoka Domain, including a famous spear, the Nippon-Go, and numerous legendary swords.

    A national museum located in Dazaifu City commonly known as the “Kyuhaku” to locals. The museum displays numerous historically momentous articles such as an ink painting by the famed Kano Masanobu, a designated National Treasure, and the original manuscript of the ancient epic Eiga Monogatari. The museum’s rounded 160 meter by 80 meter building is large enough to fit an entire international regulation soccer field, making it best to schedule plenty of time for one’s visit. The first floor contains a hands-on space for learning about Asia for children. A 10-minute walk from Dazaifu Station.
  • Hakata Machiya Folk Museum

    Come learn about the good-old days of life in Hakata at this tourist attraction. The exhibition hall, Machiya Hall, and souvenir shop are all connected, and the Machiya Hall was originally built in the mid-Meiji period (late 1800s) before it was moved and reconstructed in its current location. You can also see a demonstration of how Hakata fabric was traditionally woven. Under the guidance of experienced craftsmen, you can try your hand at painting ceramics (fee required) or Hakata fabric weaving yourself. It's just a five-minute walk from Gion Station.

The museum facilities themselves include a variety of environmentally-friendly measures. The Kitakyushu Environment Museum is an excellent place to learn more about environmental issues.     The treasure house of Dazaifu Tenmangu shrine. The treasure house stores and displays some 50 thousand items, including a sword once worn by Sugawara no Michizane; ancient manuscripts such as the Kan’en, a National Treasure; and artistic works. The history of the Dazaifu Tenmangu shrine as well as that of the nationwide Sugawara no Michizane faith is presented via video. Entrance fee required. A shared ticket granting entry to the Kyushu National Museum is also available.

    Here at the TOTO Museum you can learn about the roots and history of TOTO Ltd. who played a role in Japan's modernization. Along with the culture and history surrounding plumbing from their founding to the present day you can see their thoughts behind the creation and evolution of their products. There are almost 1,000 displays to see and along with goods on display including toilets, baths, faucets, and Japan's first unit bathroom (according to JIS regulations), there is also a toilet for sumo wrestlers that you can actually sit on to compare the size and new products that are only sold overseas.

    Toto Museum is unfortunately not about the band Toto, but Toto the toilet manufacturer. The first floor is a showroom where customers are there to actually redecorate their kitchen and washrooms...

    A museum dedicated to railway history located close to JR Mojiko Station. Inside, visitors can climb aboard actual trains used from the Meiji period onward. The museum also has interactive exhibits that give participants a taste of what travel was once like during various periods of railroad history in Japan. The realistic model railroad presenting a panorama of railways in Kyushu and the museum’s simulator, which lets users experience what it is like to drive an 811 series train, are particularly popular. The Train Exhibition Hall displays nine historic trains which operated in Kyushu. Visitors can also try driving a miniature train outside the museum.

    This place, as well as the historic Moji station, was an interesting combination! It's not a very large collection of locomotives, but it is worth the visit!

    Coal helped support the modernization of Japan. And the Miike Coal Mine was the largest such mine in the nation. The Omuta Coal Industry and Science Museum was opened to share the history of the Miike Coal Mine with future generations and contains detailed exhibits which make use photos, videos, and tools actually used in the mine. Particularly noteworthy is the museum’s Dynamic Tunnel. Recreating a mining tunnel 400 meters below the surface, here visitors can view equipment such as a mining cutter and electric mining train to get a feel for the incredible work which once was conducted here. Designed as a facility enjoyable by both adults and children, there is also an area where visitors can play and experiment with various forms of energy.

    A museum which collects and displays a wide variety of manga comics and related materials with a focus on manga artists connected to the Kitakyushu region. Dedicated to the three themes of seeing, reading, and drawing, the museum includes an exhibit on local manga artists and related projects, a library where visitors can browse some tens of thousands of volumes of manga, and educational spaces where manga drawing classes and lectures on manga are held.

    Based on the concept of “evolution of life” this museum displays the progression of the evolution of life and the history of humans. There is much to see including a “kid’s museum” aimed at children of elementary school age and older with displays they can touch and learn about nature and history, and a Time-Travelling Room in which animatronic dinosaurs move inside a diorama. This is a museum that can be enjoyed by many generations.

    The Sea Road Munakata Museum has permanent exhibits where one can learn about the history of Munakata as well as limited term special exhibits. There is also a 3D theater where visitors can enjoy the mysterious world of Okinoshima though sounds and images. There is an experience corner where one can come in contact with ancient civilizations through exhibits with themes such as making magatama accessories or learning how humans first made fire, enjoyable by both children and adults.

    ここは宗像大社の駐車場の目の前にあり、歩いて3分ぐらいで行ける所であったが、意外と面白かったのである、資料館で宗像の当時からの歴史もわかるし、中でも3Dシアターはとても良かった、これで無料なのだから是非、行かれることをお勧めしたい。

    A museum built on the sight of a former Hanko (Domain school) in Edo period called Keikokan. The museum contains exhibits on the culture and history of Asakura City as well as on the ancient Akizuki Domain and various other topics. The museum also regularly holds events and special exhibitions which attract large numbers of visitors, such as an exhibition of treasures once belonging to the Akizuki Kuroda family.

    秋月氏、黒田氏の歴史を学べる場所です。小さな博物館ですが、きれいで、しっかりと歴史を勉強出来ました。絵画の展示コーナーもあり雰囲気が良かったです。

    A museum dedicated to literature located a 10-minute walk from JR Nishi-Kokura Station. The museum contains exhibits on numerous writers from the Kitakyushu area such as Ogai Mori and Fumiko Hayashi. The facility also regularly holds workshops, lectures, and other events. The museum sees not only many local visitors but literature fans from far and wide as well.

    小倉の中心部、勝山公園内にあり、北九州市立中央図書館と一体の建物にあります。磯崎新設計の美しいデザインの建物で、特に内部から見た天井の構造とステンドグラスが見どころです。展示内容は、地元北九州にゆかりのある文学者の紹介で、松本清張、林芙美子といったビッグネームから、ほぼ地元のみで知られる人まで大勢の文学者の紹介がされています。展示内容自体は、万人向けではありませんが、建物は素晴らしいと思います。

Here visitors can experience Fukuoka Castle as it was in its glory days via informational panels, models, ancient maps, and CGI virtual video. The center also holds events such as a virtual walk of Fukuoka castle through time and space, attracting large numbers of tourists.

    Information centre with friendly helpful people. Good place to start when visiting the castle ruins. The have a scale model of the castle and you can watch a video about it's history.
