  • Hamaguchi Osachi Memorial Hall

    Osachi Hamaguchi was born in 1870 in Karatani, Ike Village, Nagaoka-gun (later Godaisan Village). Also sometimes called the “Lion Prime Minister,” he became Japan's 27th head of government in 1929. He was the first Prime Minister to be born in Kochi Prefecture. The main building, study, and storehouse of his family home were restored in 1994 by a local preservation initiative and are open to the public.

    Founded in 1930, this is the second oldest market in Japan. Located right near the wharf, the fish are unloaded from fishing boats and bid on right there, guaranteeing amazing freshness. There is also an array of fresh picked local produce straight from nearby farms. You can visit if you book in advance.

    This sightseeing tram runs from JR Dosan Kochi Station to Sanbashi-dori 5 Chome Station, and from Ino Station to Gomen-machi Station, with Harimaya Bridge as a hub. There's also a park and ride system, and six of the tram stops have bicycle parking. Merchandise available includes jigsaw puzzles of the unusual “Diamond Crossing” and a route map made of Tosa-washi paper, a traditional Kochi handicraft.
  • Museum of the Former Residence of Tanaka Ryosuke

    Sakamoto Ryoma often paid casual visits to the Tanaka residence, and there are lots of stories about the time he spent there. The single-story house has a gable roof with base tiles and is surrounded by a high stone fence to protect it from strong winds. It's reminiscent of a wealthy farmer's mountain village estate.

    A center for dog owners and their pets. It is fully equipped with a roughly 360-square meter grass dog run, pet salon, cafe, and pet hotel. Reservations aren't needed if you bring a vaccination certificate and have your dog protected during flea and tick season. You can also have a drink from the cafe at the dog run while you wait to get your pet a trim.

    A spot with ties to Sakamoto Ryoma about a five-minute walk from his birthplace. He trained there from the ages of 14 to 19 in sword fighting and use of the spear, bo-staff, and halberd, as well as in swimming, equestrian archery, and water-riding skills. Nothing of the dojo remains, but the stone walls and bamboo hedges give a feel for how it might have been.

    The former residence and grave of Takechi Hanpeita, the leader of the Tosa Kinnoto (loyalist clique of Tosa). It was designated as a National Historic Site in 1936. It's been out of the family since he abandoned the castle town, but the main wing of the house and the storehouse still have elements of a country samurai's estate. It's currently a private residence and cannot be accessed. Direct inquiries to the Kochi Citizenship and Cultural Properties Division.

    A shop selling local Kochi sake founded in 1963. It also sells sake from around Japan, shochu spirits, wine, liquor, mixed drinks, and a host of other products. Kegs of beer and sour cocktail are available, and they'll let you borrow the tap free of charge with an order. Kegs must be picked up and dropped off at the shop.

    A shop founded in 1953 that makes and sells Japanese sweets. Their Miyakoman sweets, created the same year the Yosakoi Festival began, are famous. The preservative-free manju buns are made from shiroan bean jam, wheat flour, sugar, eggs, and honey; they are baked with the bean jam wrapped in the dough. They're also a popular snack for everyone from kids to adults. These simple, mild flavored treats make great gifts.

    A restaurant specializing in Shamo chicken, a Japanese game breed. It opened in Kochi City's Hirome Market in 2015. Besides a variety of main dishes made with a Nankoku City-raised Shamo breed, they also serve other local Kochi fare like rare seared bonito and deep-fried moray eel chunks. Don't miss the Shamo chicken hot pot, one of Sakamoto Ryoma's favorites.

    This building constructed by the Tosa Domain's 16th feudal lord Yamanouchi Toyonori in 1665. It's a nationally designated Important Cultural Property. A two-story building with 31-meter beams and 4.5-meter crossbeams, it was part of the suburban residence of the feudal lord Yamauchi Yodo in the late Edo period. The villa acted as a guard station for foot soldiers who served as security guards. Modern tenement-style housing on this scale is rarely seen in Japan and is of great value.

In a quiet location near the prefectural office, the popular shop fills with government workers and company employees at mid-day. Lunches consist of a daily set meal or chicken curry (limited to 10 servings daily). Set meals come with a choice of white rice or mixed Japanese rice. You can get seconds of white rice no matter which kind you order with your meal.

    Currently held every Saturday at Ike Park, it was known as the Satruday Port Market when it started in 2008. Japan's first organic market, all of its stands sell organic agricultural products, additive-free prepared foods, and handmade crafts. They also collect used tempura oil that customers bring from home and provide consultations on working in agriculture. The market is packed with people every week.

  • Chosokabe Motochika Statue

    Kochi Kochi-shi Nagahama 6600 Wakamiya Hachimangu Gaien
    Chosokabe Motochika was the 21st head of the Chosokabe clan. He grew from a Tosa local to a feudal lord during Japan's Warring States period. He is renowned for unifying Tosa, and nearly the whole of Shikoku. Before heading to war, he prayed for victory at Wakamiya Hachimangu Shrine. The statue was erected there at the suggestion of a local volunteer group in 1999, marking 400 years since his death.

    The only Shinto shrine in the country that deifies Chosokabe Motochika. It was founded in 1871 at the site of the original Sekkeiji Temple at the foot of Nagahama Castle's hill. Precious items it houses include a colored portrait of Chosokabe Motochika on silk (National Important Cultural Property), a seated image of Motochika (Kochi Prefecture Cultural Property), written copies of Chosokabe land survey records from the Nagahama district, a monument to the dead from the Hetsugigawa battle, and votive pictures dedicated by Yamauchi Tadayoshi.

    A nabeyaki-style ramen noodle shop made with their special broth that simmers for 25 hours. A Susaki local favorite developed at this shop, the soy sauce chicken broth is paired with fine, firm, noodles for real Japanese-style flavor. Varieties include roasted garlic, super spicy, crazy spicy, and salt and citron. They serve large and regular sizes with a variety of toppings, as well as rice.
