    Kouchi Pref. Kouchishi Marunouchi 1-2-1
A castle called “Otakasayama Castle” was built before the Warring States Period, but Kochi Castle was established by the first Tosa feudal lord, Yamanouchi Kazutoyo at the beginning of the Edo period. It is also known as the only castle where the structures in the inner citadel remain completely intact. 15 of the buildings have been designated as Important Cultural Properties. There are also statues of Taisuke Itagaki, Yamanouchi Kazutoyo and his wife, Chiyo located near Ote-mon gate, and the castle keep’s magical form rises from the surface as it is illuminated at night.

I came to Kochi mainly to see the Kochi Castle as it is one of Japans original castles. There is paid parking at the base of the castle. Once you walk through the gate, the walk to the castle is not...

Kouchi Pref. Nankokushi Okouchou Yahata 1099-1
These castle ruins are located in Yahata, Oko-cho, Nankoku City. It was the site of the castle of Chosokabe Motochika, the samurai warlord who ruled Tosa (Kochi Prefecture) during the Warring States period. Traces of the castle’s embankment, moat, and buildings have remained. The entire area around the ruins has developed into a prefectural historical park that features various facilities including the Kochi Prefectural Museum of History, a scenic square, and more.

    Kouchi Pref. Shimantoshi Nakamura
This public park is located near the Shimanto Historical Museum. It was the former site of Nakamura Castle (also known as Tamematsu Castle), which was built by Tamematsu during the Onin War. The park on a hill where you can see the townscape of Nakamura brings to mind Kyoto and extends in a square pattern, and is known as a popular cherry blossom viewing spot. Planted with approximately 500 Yoshino cherry trees, you can enjoy them when in full bloom from late March to early April, and also fantastic night cherry blossoms when paper lanterns are illuminated during the Shimanto River Flower and Cherry Blossom festivals.
  • Aki Castle Ruins

    Kochi Aki-shi Doi
A hirayama castle (built on a hill surrounded by lowlands) at almost the center of the Aki Plain. It is said that the castle was first built there in 1308 by the Aki clan who had dominated the region since ancient times. They were one of the seven ruling families in Tosa during the Warring States period and exerted enormous influence in the province. In 1569 they were defeated, and the castle fell in a fierce battle with Chosokabe Motochika who wanted to unify Tosa. You can get a view of the Aki Plain and the Pacific Ocean from the top of the oblong hilltop castle site. The castle was burned down, but the earthworks, moat, and large masugata defensive stone arrangements are still intact. In summer it is also a popular spot for seeing white lotus flowers in bloom.
  • Urado Castle Ruin

    Kochi Kochi-shi Urado
The hilltop area behind Katsurahama beach (one of Kochi's leading scenic spots) is the site of Urado Castle, the last castle of the Chosokabe clan. It is said that when Yamauchi Kazutoyo built Kochi Castle, he demolished and carried away Urado Castle's stone fortifications. A portion of them remain, as do three moats to the west, and you can still imagine what it must have been like.

Kochi Areas

The largest of Shikoku’s prefectures, Kochi is endowed with some of the island’s most exceptional sand beaches lining the Pacific Ocean, which narrows into the Shimanto-gawa, a huge river that stretches 196 kilometers into the prefecture, passing verdant mountains and hosting countless riverside activities. Whether you’re a pilgrim or not, Kochi’s 16 Buddhist temples that make up one leg of the Shikoku Pilgrimage are worth a visit, particularly Chikurin-ji for its five-tier pagoda.
