This gallery located in Utsuigawa, Shimanto Town, Takaoka County displays works entered into a kappa (a mythical river creature) figure modeling contest organized by the figure manufacturer Kaiyodo. A sister facility, Kaiyodo Hobby Museum Shimanto, is located about two kilometers away on the side of Prefectural Route 55.

The temple grounds offer a sweeping view of the Susaki City and of the Pacific Ocean.

    Kochi Aki-shi Doi 953-I
A museum located at the site of Aki Castle. The Goto family—senior Tosa domain officials during the Warring States period—once lived there. It houses documents related to the Goto family, a valuable resource for understanding the Tosa domain during the feudal era. There is also a collection of arts and crafts, weapons, and folk implements connected to the local area. The permanent exhibition showcases important people with Aki ties, such as the founder of the Mitsubishi Group, Yataro Iwasaki. Archaeological artifacts excavated within the city limits and old documents are also on display, making it easy to get an overview of Aki's history. Special exhibits, such as of dolls from the Meiji, Taisho, and Showa periods, are held two or three times a year.

Great place to learn a bit about the history of Aki City (and Kochi Prefecture). They have a basic guide available in English.

    Kochi Agawa-gun Inocho Daikokucho
Nicknamed “Ino-no-Daikokusama,” this is an ancient Daikoku-cho Shinto shrine. It enshrines three Shinto deities: Okuninushi-no-mikoto, Susanoo-no-mikoto, and Kushi-inada-hime. Its founding dates back to the year 793, and the octagonal portable shrine there dating from the Kamakura period is a national Important Cultural Property. The deities there are thought to impart a multitude of boons, including good fortune, matchmaking, household safety, business prosperity, recovery from illness, and more. The festivals held in spring and autumn are counted among Tosa's three major festivals; the most important event in the region, it sees hundreds of thousands of visitors come from inside and outside the prefecture.

Although this shrines name is Sugimoto Shrine, locally it is known as Daikoku-san. Daikoku is Done of the Shichi-fuku-jin Seven Lucky Gods and is the god of wealth and the god that looks out for...

This was the family temple of a senior Yamauchi clan official, and the garden is considered one of the top three feudal era Tosa gardens. Located on a hill in the Kamimachi district near Aoyama Bunko, it is also a prefectural Place of Scenic Beauty. A Rinzai Buddhist temple of the Myoshinji school, its garden has a pond and “borrowed scenery,” giving it a Zen feel. It also has beautiful cherry blossoms in the spring and colorful foliage in the fall.

A museum where you can learn about Mt. Yokokura and the Earth's history, rare plants loved by Dr. Makino, and the history of Ochi. Take a moment to admire the building itself too—designed by world-renowned architect Tadao Ando, it harmonizes with Mt. Yokokura's natural environment. The museum also holds a variety of special exhibits.

Japan's first calligraphy museum. Located in Doikachu at the site of Aki Castle, its Calligraphy Hall of Fame has received national attention. Calligraphy has been very popular in Aki since the feudal era. During the late Taisho and Showa periods it produced master calligraphers such as Oun Kawatani, the Shotei Brothers, and Yukei Teshima. The museum houses approximately 2,000 pieces of Japanese calligraphy brushed by them and other leading artists. Around 100 works of Chinese characters, the Japanese syllabary, and seal engravings by currently active calligraphers are always on display.

    Kochi Aki-gun Umajimura Umaji 4281
A Shingon Buddhist temple of the Koyasan lineage located in the mountains of eastern Kochi Prefecture. The exact date of construction is unknown, but it dates back as far as the late Heian period and has long been a center of local faith. Legend says the priest Kobo Daishi (Kukai) built it in a single night. It's the only nationally designated Important Cultural Property in eastern Kochi Prefecture. The 5.5-meter beams of the inner and outer hall and the 7.3-meter cross beams of the temple hall are made in a style typical of the middle and late Muromachi periods. Simply yet skillfully built with high-quality materials like cypress and cedar, the construction method of using wide boards rather than rafters is unusual. The temple is highly valued as an example of the region's architectural culture come to fruition.

    Kouchi Pref. Murotoshi Murotsu 2652 - a
A temple sitting on the crest of a small mount overlooking Murotsu Port, it is the 25th temple of the Shikoku 88-temple Pilgrimage, and is normally called “Tsuji.” It is said to have originated when Kobo Daishi venerated the mountain as sacred ground because its shape resembled cintamani stones held by jizo Bodhisattva, and then carved a jizo Bodhisattva as the main object of worship. The bell tower gate—along the steep stone steps to the main hall—is reminiscent of the crimson Ryugujo of legend, and known as “Buddha’s Lighthouse.” At the main hall at the top of the stone steps, you get a great view of the sea around Muroto.

Kochi Areas

around-area-map

The largest of Shikoku’s prefectures, Kochi is endowed with some of the island’s most exceptional sand beaches lining the Pacific Ocean, which narrows into the Shimanto-gawa, a huge river that stretches 196 kilometers into the prefecture, passing verdant mountains and hosting countless riverside activities. Whether you’re a pilgrim or not, Kochi’s 16 Buddhist temples that make up one leg of the Shikoku Pilgrimage are worth a visit, particularly Chikurin-ji for its five-tier pagoda.
