The Hachiyo-zan Zenjibu-ji Temple is the 32nd temple of the Shikoku 88-temple Pilgrimage. According to tradition, the Temple was founded by the bodhisattva Gyoki in the 8th century on the orders of Emperor Shomu, to pray for the safety of ships crossing the sea to and from Tosa. Later on, Kobo Daishi visited the site, and carved a statue of the bodhisattva Kannon with eleven faces to serve as the main object of veneration for the Temple. During the era when this region was administered as part of the Tosa domain, successive lords of the domain maintained a close relationship with the Zenjibu-ji Temple, coming here to pray for a safe journey whenever they had to travel by sea when returning to Edo to fulfill their responsibilities under the alternate attendance system (which required the lords of each domain to spend half of their time in Edo). The Temple is familiarly known as “Minen-ji” or “Mine-ji” by locals, because of its location on Mt. Mine.

The honorific “Shakki-zan” mountain name affixed to the temple name originated in the year 911, when legends say a red turtle carried a copper temple bell here from the Dragon Palace. It is said that Gyoki sculpted the principal image of Bhaisajyaguru in 724, as well as built 12 residences for the Buddhist priests. On the temple grounds, there’s a stone statue of a large red turtle as well as a fountain associated with Kukai known as the “eyewash well” and said to cure eye ailments.

This temple is 26th of the 88 sacred places on the Shikoku Pilgrimage. It is said that Kobo Daishi made the Bhaisajyaguru at the behest of Emperor Heizei and the temple was established with this at the principal object of worship. It was originally a temple that did not allow women therefore they had to worship at the women’s temple that had been built around four kilometers away. It has several Buddhist statues including the wooden seated statue of Amitabha stored in the repository and which have been designated as Nationally Important Cultural Properties. There is a large red pot called the Ichiryu Manbai Pot and it is said Kobo Daishi saved the people from starvation by cooking rice in the pot and multiplying it by 10,000.

The Ino-Cho Paper Museum is a specialist paper museum located approximately 10 minutes’ walk from Ino Station (on the JR Dosan Line). The Museum was opened in 1985 with the aim of helping to revitalize the production of Tosa Washi (Tosa traditional handmade paper), one of Japan’s traditional handicrafts. The permanent exhibitions include displays on the history of Washi traditional paper, the related cultural traditions, the materials and tools used to make Washi paper, etc. There are also papermaking demonstrations and opportunities to try your hand at making paper yourself. Special exhibitions are held on ongoing basis. It costs 400 yen to have a go at making two sheets of colored paper or eight postcards in the Papermaking Experience Corner. The papermaking experience activity takes around one hour; groups of 10 or more people are requested to book in advance.

It was an interesting tour, learning about Japanese paper but I had no interest prior to the tour. Watching the demonstration was the best part.

The Dodo-zan Zenraku-ji Temple is the 30th temple of the Shikoku 88-temple Pilgrimage. During the period when the boundaries between Shintoism and Buddhism were relatively fluid, Kobo Daishi established the Zenraku-ji Temple as a Betto-ji (Buddhist temple associated with a Shinto shrine) of the Takagamo Daimyojin Shrine (the most prestigious Shinto shrine in the Tosa region). The Temple received protection from the Tosa domain, and flourished for many years. However, the Temple was closed down during the anti-Buddhist movement of the Meiji period; it was reestablished in 1929. The statue of Kobo Daishi in the Temple is known as Yakuyoke Daishi. The statue of Jizo (the Protector of Children) in the Koyasu Jizo Hall within the Temple precincts is also said to have been modeled on Kobo Daishi.

A new shrine was built to honor the achievements of the 15th feudal lord Toyoshige and 16th feudal lord Toyonori, active at the end of the Edo period and during the Meiji restoration. It was completed in 1934, given its current name, and declared an Imperial Shrine of Special Status. It still honors the historic figures listed above.

This roadside station on the side of National Route 194, which connects central Kochi Prefecture with Ehime Prefecture, is located between Kochi City and the border shared by the two prefectures. It is well-known as a rest stop for people driving the Setouchi Shimanami Kaido Expressway, which connects Shikoku with Honshu. The surrounding area gained the nickname “Niyodo Blue” in recent years for the beautiful main stream and tributaries of the Niyodo River, a class A river. The area is visited by many tourists due to its popularity on social media. In addition to people seeking great mountain climbers and fall foliage, the spot is also extremely popular with motorcycle tourists and cyclists. The central facility of the relatively small roadside station is its local products shop. Leveraging its location amongst the mountains, the shop offers many handcrafted products made the old-fashioned way with natural ingredients that cannot be found anywhere else. Visitors can always enjoy a hot meal or a variety of handmade sweets at the station’s two food shops, “Shokujidokoro Hachikinya” and “Mori no Chiisa na Okashiyasan”.
