This is a castle which is said to have been constructed at the end of the Kamakura period by Utsunomiya Toyofusa who entered the domain as a protector. Thereafter, the castle was restored by the castle fortification expert, Todo Takatora, and the castle town was prosperous as the center of politics and economy of the Iyo Ozu feudal clan. Due to deterioration, the castle keep was demolished in 1888, but thereafter it was restored in 2004. It is a wooden keep reconstruction which was faithfully reproduced based on historical facts. Four turrets such as the kitchen turret and the southern corner turret have been designated as an Important Cultural Properties of Japan.

At last, a castle in the middle of town. Not mountain climbing, just a gentle stroll. Inside is just average, but its a pleasant enough place to stop off for a coffee.

A sea ferry that connects Saganoseki Port in Oita Prefecture with Misaki Port in Ehime Prefecture. This is the shortest connection between Shikoku and Kyushu at 31 kilometers wide, taking about 70 minutes to cross. It is part of National Route 197 which connects Kochi City with Oita City, but instead of using a bridge to cross the water, it has a ferry passing over the sea. The ferry makes 16 round-trip crossings every day, from 7 a.m. until 11 p.m. Along with scenic view seats, shops, gallery seats, and group seating, there are a variety of accessible facilities including wheelchair accessible elevators (phone reservation required) and multipurpose bathrooms.

This is a mountain villa of 9,930 square meters which commands a view of the picturesque landscape around the Hiji River, the “Garyu depths”, the villa was designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan in 2016. This is the villa which the wealthy merchant, Kouchi Torajiro constructed during the Meiji period to spend his final years; the Sukiya-zukuri style (Japanese traditional architectural style) of the building and the traditional Japanese landscape garden are wonderful. You can enjoy the beautiful scenery at your ease with green tea at “Furoan”. This site gained one star from “Michelin Green Guide Japan” in 2011, attracting attention.

Loved the quietness and history of this old Japanese home and garden. Lovely walk around the house and garden. Staff were very helpful with imparting their knowledge and keen to answer questions.

A museum located inside Baseyama Park situated along the Nishiumi Road. The museum displays an Imperial Japanese Navy Shiden Kai (Kawanishi N1K2-J) fighter plane which was pulled from the bottom of Hisayoshi Bay 40 meters under the surface of the sea in July 1979. The only extant model in the entire country, the plane sank entirely intact and was later restored, and thus it is also in very good condition. The plane belonged to the 343rd Air Service. After taking off from Omura Air Base, the plane engaged with American forces over the skies of the Bungo Channel. The plane then later apparently crashed into the ocean. Today, the plane is used to symbolize the prayer for eternal peace. Visitors can also view information on and pictures and archival footage of the Kawanishi N1K.

This is a Tendaijimon school temple in Uwa-cho in Seiyo City, Ehime Prefecture and is 43rd temple of the 88 sacred places on the Shikoku Pilgrimage. It is said to have originally been built as the great Buddhist temple at the behest of Emperor Kimmei around the 6th century in order to deify the statue of the thousand-armed kannon that came to Japan from China. Following this, it became a Shugendo mountain worship training hall but it was laid to waste and then revived by Kobo Daishi. It is also known as a temple with connections to Minamoto no Yorimoto. There are many things to see in the grounds including the Kobo Well with connections to Kobo Daishi and the Happy Kannon Statue which has a benevolent expression.

The Heijo-zan Kanjizai-ji is a temple belonging to the Daikaku-ji school of Shingon Buddhism, located in Ainan Town, Minamiuwa County, Ehime Prefecture. It is the 40th temple of the Shikoku 88-temple Pilgrimage; because it is the furthest of the 88 temples from the starting point of the Pilgrimage, it is colloquially known as the “Rear Gateway of the Shikoku Temples.” The Kanjizai-ji Temple was founded in 807 by Kobo Daishi on the orders of Emperor Heizei. According to tradition, the statue of the Bhaisajyaguru (Medicine Buddha) flanked by two warrior attendants which is the main object of veneration in the Temple was carved by Kobo Daishi from a single sacred tree. The Temple’s amulets—which are made by printing the words “Namu Amida Butsu” (“Homage to the Amida Buddha”) onto cotton cloth—are believed to have miraculous powers to ward off evil, ensure smooth childbirth, and assist with recovery from disease. The path leading up to the Temple is lined with statues of the “Eight Buddha Protectors of the Twelve Chinese Zodiac Signs.”

The Shikoku Karst is also the source of the Shimanto River, said to be the last clear stream in Japan on account of there not being any dams on the river. The sight of the Tosa Red cows grazing on the land is both tranquil and beautiful.

Located around five minutes’ drive from the Mima Interchange, the Butsumoku-ji Temple is a temple belonging to the Omuro sect of Shingon Buddhism; it is the 42nd temple of the Shikoku 88-temple Pilgrimage. According to tradition, the Temple was founded in 807 when Kobo Daishi carved a statue of the Dainichi-Nyorai Buddha from a Camphor tree that was growing there and built a temple to house it. As Kobo Daishi was riding a cow at the time, statues of cow and horse deities were used to represent the Buddha’s attendants; today, many people visit the Temple to pray for their pets. The Temple is affectionately known as “Dainichi-san” by local people because of the Dainichi Nyorai Buddha statue. Unusually for the temples included in the Shikoku 88-temple Pilgrimage, the Bustumoku-ji Temple has a bell tower with a thatched roof. The statue of Kobo Daishi in the Kobo Hall is, based on the inscription on the statue, the oldest surviving statue of Kobo Daishi in Japan.

This Japanese garden opened in 1985 in Tsushima Town, Uwajima City, Ehime Prefecture and has been chosen as one of Japan’s top 100 urban gardens. Two large ponds sit at the center of the park, which features approximately 150 kinds of trees and around 200,000 specimens. The flowers that grow in the various seasons are a sight to behold. The park grounds are dotted with sights such as a farmhouse from the mid-Edo period, a teahouse near a ridge, a rest area modeled after a fisherman’s house, a teahouse in the Sukiya style, and more. There are several events as well, such as the Plum Festival in February, the Nanraku Park Outer Moat Cherry Blossom Festival from late March until April, and the Nanraku Park Moon Viewing Festival in September.

This temple of Shingon sect Omuro school in Mima Town, Uwajima City, Ehime Prefecture is the 41st temple of the Shikoku 88-temple Pilgrimage. This is the place where Kobo Daishi met the incarnation of Gokoku Daimyojin (Inari Daimyojin) in 807, created a statue in its figure, and enshrined it with the statue of the eleven-faced Avalokitesvara and the statue of Flanking Samurais, making them the guardians of Shikoku. There are always many visitors as is said that the temple brings benefits of prosperous business and success to people’s careers. Visitors can see the syncretism of Shinto and Buddhism in the temple as they pass through the Torii (Shinto shrine gates) in place of Sanmn (the main gate of Buddhist temples) and are welcomed by Shinto Shrine guardian dogs. Also there are stone statues of Shinto foxes and Buddhist Jizo guardians standing side by side that also show the coexistence of the two religions. Every year on the first Sunday of March the “Inari Festival” is held.
