  • Botchan Karakuri Clock

    Ehime Pref. Matsuyamashi Dougoyunomachi
Located in the square at the entrance to the Dogo shopping arcade in front of the Dogo Onsen Station, the Botchan Karakuri Clock was built in 1994 for the 100th anniversary of the Dogo Onsen main building constructed in the design of the Shinrokaku copula crowning the historic structure. The Karakuri tricked-out clock sounds the time every hour from 8 a.m. through 10 p.m. by displaying the figurine characters from Botchan, written by Natsume Soseki, as the clock unfolds rising upwards to music. Immediately next to the clock tower, one can freely dip their feet in the seasoned footbath that was used at the Dogo Onsen main building from 1891 to 1954.

Ehime Main Areas

around-area-map

Stretched across the northwest corner of Shikoku island, Ehime is a nature-rich prefecture boasting beautiful coastlines and a rural center where mountains play host to 26 of the Buddhist temples that make up the Shikoku Pilgrimage. Matsuyama is home to an original post-feudal castle as well as Dogo Onsen, one of the country's oldest natural hot springs. The northern city of Imabari marks the entrance to the Shimano Kaido, a road that crosses six spectacular bridges and several islands, forming a route between Shikoku and mainland Honshu.
