Come make a day trip or stay overnight at the Higashidogo Hot-Spring Village, this hot-spring bath house, just 12-minutes from the main Dogo-Onsen bath house. The baths are fed by a simple alkaline hot spring with an unusual viscosity. It's great for the skin and can help with nerve pain or stiff shoulders. The spring water is also filtered through three round stone filters resulting in a drinkable mineral water that lets you feel the effect of the spring water throughout the body. There are also a variety of glamorous food options including cheese with braised short ribs, motsu-nabe (offal hot-pot stew), a meal served on a wooden boat, and traditional afternoon tea.

Joruriji Temple is the first pilgrimage temple of the Hachikaji (eight temples) in Matsuyama City on the Shikoku 88-temple Pilgrimage, in which it is the 46th temple. The Natural Monument, the Ibukibyakushin tree, said to be over 1,000 years old is preserved within the serene environs of the temple, under which are the engraved stone ‘Feet of Buddha.’ Located to the left of the main hall within the confines of the Torii is the Ichigan Benten, said to grant you one wish only. In front of the main hall and the Taishi statue Hall are placed wood-carved figurines of Kobo Daishi as an infant called Dakko Taishi. They are reportedly endeared as like “holding a real baby, and you somehow feel peaceful.”

This is a Tendaijimon school temple in Uwa-cho in Seiyo City, Ehime Prefecture and is 43rd temple of the 88 sacred places on the Shikoku Pilgrimage. It is said to have originally been built as the great Buddhist temple at the behest of Emperor Kimmei around the 6th century in order to deify the statue of the thousand-armed kannon that came to Japan from China. Following this, it became a Shugendo mountain worship training hall but it was laid to waste and then revived by Kobo Daishi. It is also known as a temple with connections to Minamoto no Yorimoto. There are many things to see in the grounds including the Kobo Well with connections to Kobo Daishi and the Happy Kannon Statue which has a benevolent expression.

This temple belongs to the Koyasan-Shingon sect and is located in KanadaTown in Shikokuchuo City, Ehime Prefecture, and it is the 65th temple of the Shikoku 88-temple Pilgrimage. It is said that the Buddhist priest Gyoki laid the foundations for the temple between 729 and 749. The principal image is an 11-faced Kanzeon statue, which is said to have been sculpted by Kukai when he visited the temple. He is also said to have sculpted a statue of Acala and constructed a triangular fire altar and taught the secret “kofuku (surrender) goma” ritual. The 11-faced Kanzeon statue is said to bring good luck, ward off evil, pregnancy, and provide safe childbirth, and many couples visit to pray to be blessed with a child. The temple grounds are also known as a famous viewing spot for wild cherry blossoms.

The Sendan-san Koon-ji Temple is the 61st temple of the Shikoku 88-temple Pilgrimage. According to tradition, the temple was founded by Prince Shotoku to pray for the recovery of Emperor Yomei from illness at the end of the 6th century, making it one of the most ancient temples in the 88-temple Pilgrimage. Subsequently, when Kobo Daishi was visiting the temple, he met a woman in front of the temple gate who was suffering from a difficult pregnancy; Kobo Daishi burnt sandalwood incense and prayed for a smooth childbirth, and the woman was able to give birth safely; this incident is said to be the origin of the name Endan-san (“Sandalwood Mountain”). Since then, the Koon-ji Temple has been famous as a temple where people go to pray for a smooth childbirth; there is a statue of Koyasu Daishi (a famous monk who is believed to help women in childbirth) just to the right of the Daisei Hall which attracts may worshippers.

Sugazan Enmyoji located in Waki Town, Matsuyama City, Ehime Prefecture is a temple of the Shingon sect Chizan school and the 53rd temple of the Shikoku 88-temple Pilgrimage. It is said that Gyoki carved the principal image of Amida Nyorai and the two side statues establishing the temple in 749, and Kobo daishi restored it later. The treasures of the temple are the oldest copper amulet in Shikoku’s sacred pilgrimage sites, which Dr. Starr, an American, found on a Shikoku pilgrimage. A Christian stone monument on the left of Daishi hall and a dragon-shaped carving on an upper-left lintel in the main hall made by Jingoro Hidari are particular must-sees.

This historical building of 1894, now open as a museum, was once the residence of Kami Haga family, the main branch family of the Hon Haga family, one of the largest domestic wax producers in the country. There are ten main buildings on the grounds including the main house and annexes, and boiler room, designated as a National Important Cultural Property. Inside the residence is an exhibition space, and materials related to mokuro (Japan tallow) production and bleaching mokuro in Uchiko district are displayed.

This wax museum was very interesting. There was some English signage which gave us enough understanding. Worth a look.

This is the head temple of the Ishizuchi sect of Shingon Buddhism and is located in Sunouchiko in Saijo City, Kochi Prefecture, and it is the 64th temple of the Shikoku 88-temple Pilgrimage. It is located at the foot of Mt. Ishizuchi, considered one of Japan’s seven holiest mountains and a quasi-national park. En no Gyoja laid the foundations for the temple, and it was built as a complete seven-structured temple compound under orders from Emperor Kammu (781-806). The imperial family and the feudal lords of the Edo period had a deep connection, and many believers remain today. Near the summit of Mt. Ishizuchi is the Inner Maegamiji Temple, and in July, worshipers wearing white clothing ascend the mountain at the start of the mountain-climbing season.

The Higashiyama Hantaji Temple can be reached by taking a 25-minute bus journey from JR Matsuyama Station to the Hantaji-guchi bus stop, and then walking for around 10 minutes. The Temple, which is located on the slopes of Mt. Awaji, is the 50th temple of the Shikoku 88-temple Pilgrimage. From the Temple precincts, situated on a small plateau, there are beautiful views of Matsuyama Castle, the Matsuyama cityscape, and the Seto Inland Sea. According to tradition, the Temple was built on the order of Emperor Koken to house a statue of the Bhaisajyaguru (Medicine Buddha) that had been carved by the bodhisattva Gyoki. Ippen Shonin, the founder of the Ji-shu branch of Pure Land Buddhism, is said to have studied at the Temple as a young man. Sights that are particularly worth seeing include the small statue of Kankiten (Ganesh) donated by Tokugawa Ietsuna, which is enshrined in the Shoten-do Hall, and praying to which is said to bring success in business, as well as the paintings on the ceiling of the Kanetsuki-do bell hall.

The Heijo-zan Kanjizai-ji is a temple belonging to the Daikaku-ji school of Shingon Buddhism, located in Ainan Town, Minamiuwa County, Ehime Prefecture. It is the 40th temple of the Shikoku 88-temple Pilgrimage; because it is the furthest of the 88 temples from the starting point of the Pilgrimage, it is colloquially known as the “Rear Gateway of the Shikoku Temples.” The Kanjizai-ji Temple was founded in 807 by Kobo Daishi on the orders of Emperor Heizei. According to tradition, the statue of the Bhaisajyaguru (Medicine Buddha) flanked by two warrior attendants which is the main object of veneration in the Temple was carved by Kobo Daishi from a single sacred tree. The Temple’s amulets—which are made by printing the words “Namu Amida Butsu” (“Homage to the Amida Buddha”) onto cotton cloth—are believed to have miraculous powers to ward off evil, ensure smooth childbirth, and assist with recovery from disease. The path leading up to the Temple is lined with statues of the “Eight Buddha Protectors of the Twelve Chinese Zodiac Signs.”

"This road has a view of Mt. Ishizuchi, western Japan's highest peak and one of the 100 Famous Japanese Mountains. The road's name derives from the similarity of pronunciation between ""Yuho"", the original Japanese name and ""UFO."" It's a very popular driving route, and it has also appeared in Toyota commercials. The road runs about 27 kilometers through Kamegamori at an elevation ranging from 1,300 to 1,700 meters. Its superb scenery includes Akebono rhododendrons blooming in May, mountain hydrangea in July, and a geranium species called Shikokufuro in August. If your timing's right, September will let you see both colorful foliage and the landscape covered in frost. The road is closed from the end of November to the beginning of April."

The Shikoku Matsuyama Dogo Onsen hotel is a long-established hot springs hotel located approximately three minutes’ walk from Dogo Onsen Station (on the Iyotetsu Jonan Line tram line). The hotel traces its origins back to a hot springs inn that was opened during the Kan’ei era (1624–1644), and which was famous for being patronized by leading literary figures connected with Matsuyama. Day visitors are welcome to use the hot springs facilities. The cypress-wood bath, where bathers can relax while enjoying the marvelous scent of Hinoki (cypress wood), and the two granite bathtubs (made using the Iyo region’s famous Oshima granite) are open to male bathers at certain times of day and female bathers at other times.
