The Wabisuke restaurant is situated around seven minutes’ walk from Uwajima Station (on the JR Yosan Line). The restaurant prides itself on serving dishes made with locally-sourced food; its outstanding local dishes make extensive use of Uwajima’s fresh seafood and mountain specialties. Wabisuke has a relaxed, casual atmosphere and a comprehensive range of dining options; patrons can eat sitting at the counter, in individual rooms, or around a hori-gotatsu heated table. The restaurant also serves lunches.

We had a typical Japanese set meal. Appetizers, hot pot, salad, miso soup rice and tempura. The food was ok - service was great which helped the overall rating. Nothing really notable about the...

You’ll find this longstanding local restaurant in Sanban Town, Matsuyama City, Ehime Prefecture. It opened during the Kanei period. Enjoy some traditional Ehime cuisine amid the subdued, authentic Japanese ambiance, such as sea bream somen noodles, sea bream rice, jakoten (a kind of fried kamaboko), and more. The sea bream somen noodles are the restaurant’s signature dish. They come with a whole small sea bream on top and feature “five-color somen,” which is a favorite in Matsuyama. There are also plenty of fish from the Seto Inland Sea and local vegetables and meat dishes that go well with local Ehime sake.

Just like DC, long on reputation short on deliverable. Food is good but boring. The rainbow noodles a real yawner. You need a magnifying glass to find the bream in the signature dish. Go hit the...

This restaurant, directly supplied by a fishmonger, is located very near to the Dogo Onsen Honkan in Matsuyama City, Ehime Prefecture and is recognizable by its cute mural of tanuki racoon dogs. All tables inside are sunken kotatsu (heated tables) and there is a calm atmosphere. The local cuisine using seasonal seafood from the Seto Inland Sea is popular; it includes the Uwajima-style sea bream rice, a local specialty. Popular dishes are the local cuisine set lunch which has limited availability of carefully-selected, reasonably-priced seafood and the kamameshi rice pot set.

A good choice if you need a restaurant with an English menu that is open reasonably late ( last order 9:30) near Dogo Onsen. The food can be hit or miss. But the sea bream steamed in sake ( as long...

Hinode located about three minutes’ walk from Mitsu Station on Iyo Railway Takahama Line is a specialty Mitsuhamayaki restaurant which has been loved by locals for over a half century since its establishment. Mitsuhamayaki in which a dough using flour dissolved in water is fried on an iron plate and topped with ingredients such as spring onion, cabbage and soba noodles is a local soul food, and it can be eaten not only as a meal but also as a snack. It is superb as the sweet, spicy sauce, springy base, texture and the umami taste of the ingredients go well together. Sobadaitsuki nikudamaabura (Japanese pancake topped with meat and beef fat on soba noodles as a base) is the most popular menu item. The small restaurant has only counter seating, and takeaway is also available.

This restaurant serving local cuisine is located close to Dogo Onsen Honkan in Matsuyama City, Ehime Prefecture. Customers can savor typical local cuisine centering around seafood from the Seto Inland Sea as well as plenty of Iyo meat and vegetables. Its most famous dish is the Dogo tendon rice bowl topped with a generous portion of prawn, chikuwa fish sausage and vegetable tempura. It is a superb dish of which the restaurant is proud and for which ingredients are carefully selected right down to the sauce, rice, miso soup and pickles. Uotake Pirate Udon, a noodle dish with a generous portion of seafood from the sea that used to be associated with local pirates and Uwajima sea bream rice (rice topped with fresh sea bream sashimi) are both popular.

I travelled to Matsuyama for a conference in March, and I was looking for a restaurant to have lunch. I walked past Dogo Uotake and there were a few people waiting outside, so I decided to join the...

This goods shop&restaurant is located in front of the Murakami Suigun Museum on Oshima Island at Shimanami Kaido. Their cuisine highlights lively seafood raised in the harsh tides of Shimanami Sea, and at a reasonable price. Popular choices include the “kaisen don” —a rice bowl topped with sashimi of the fresh fish caught that day. The outdoor seating offers you “kaisen barbeque” —with seasonal seafood grilled on a charcoal grill. Also at this restaurant, you can enjoy the experience of the tide at Shimanami Kaido at 10 % discount.

I had lunch before I got on a boat to observe the rapid tide. If you like fresh fish dishes, this is not a bad choice. Above all, the restaurant is just in front of the pier, and you make boarding...

  • Hozumitei

    Ehime Pref. Uwajimashi Shinmachi 2-3-8
A Japanese-style restaurant about a five-minute walk from Uwajima Station. The exterior was renovated to look like a storehouse with a full Japanese atmosphere. The spacious interior has seating and private rooms to meet the needs of small and large groups alike, and also offers counter seating for watching the chefs at work and leg-warming kotatsu seating. The menu features sea bream with rice and other local Uwajima cooking. Most popular is the “Uwajima tai-meshi gozen” —with fresh sea bream sashimi mixed with tare sauce or raw eggs and poured over piping hot rice, and completed with maruzushi, vegetable jakoten, or a tempura medley.

Look for the classy shop curtain—you’ll find this popular teppan-yaki-tori restaurant of Imabari. Beloved for the personality of the chef, who is quite selective of ingredients and foods, this restaurant features a clean interior, counter seating and wide tatami rooms for you to enjoy Imabari yaki-tori. Starting with the skin and specially-made sweet-n-sour sauce, there are many intricately crafted dishes, like the juicy chicken wings and renkon radishes. You can get the best yaki-tori of the day with the “chef’s choice” course, too.

This 140-year old remodeled merchant’s house with its historical ambience has been designated a registered tangible cultural property. Interior décor like its furniture and tableware is reminiscent of those days gone by. The restaurant uses Japanese buckwheat flour and Uchiko-grown vegetables. Their “Noasobi Bento” lunch box with local seasonal ingredients is always popular. The second floor is used as a gallery. In addition to selling local traditional crafts, events are held on a regular basis.

Located a 5-minute walk from Dogo Onsen Station, the Nikitatsu kaiseki cuisine restaurant is annexed to an old sake wine cellar facing the Nigitatsu road. Directly operated by Mizukuchi Shuzo sake brewery, a large variety of Japanese wines can be enjoyed including Daiginjoshu Sanjugo and junmai, Iyo no Usuzumizakura, as well as shochu, and the Dogo microbrew. The meal courses, artistically arranged in kaiseki style, are centered around fresh sashimi distinctively served in wooden-tubs. Come enjoy traditional Southern-Ehime Taimeshi, rice with sea bream in this Japanese-style restaurant. In the central (Chuyo) and eastern (Toyo) regions, grilled whole sea breams are cooked with rice, but in the southern (Nanyo) region, around Rinsuke here in Uwajima, it features raw sliced sea bream which is placed on rice along with a special soy-sauce based sauce and egg yolk. Many restaurants will dissolve the egg yolk in a dashi fish broth, but here along with shredded nori and ground sesame seeds, a whole egg yolk is placed on top of the fresh sliced sea beam that completely covers the rice. Another popular menu item that is also served with their special sauce is a boiled barley and rice dish mixed with grated yam.

    駐車スペースがないため、りんすけさんに聞き、内子高校の近くの観光センターを教えてもらい、タダでした。 目当ての鯛めしは大変美味しく頂きました。新鮮さを感じました。彩りもある最高だった。

This restaurant serving up local cuisine is just a two-minute walk from Uwajima Station. They serve up a variety of Ehime staples including Uwajima Tai Meshi (Rice cooked with sea bream), in which fresh slices of sea bream topped with sauce mixed with raw egg, and Jako-ten-yaki, in which small fish are mashed into a paste and then fried into tempura. They serve a number of dishes that can't be had anywhere else, such as Fukayuzarashi, a dish from the southern region with boiled shark served with a spicy-sweet dipping sauce called migarashi, and Sea Bream Soumen (requires advance reservation) where a full sea bream is served with soumen noodles arranged to evoke the waves off of Uwajima. Alongside traditional tatami mat seating they offer dug out seating, perfect for families with small children.

Very good. Very local. After castle walk and must come eat. Price is around 2000 yen for a meal for lunch but is worth.

Come taste local riverside Ozu cuisine in this remodeled county office building originally built during the early Meiji-period. They can accommodate any situation with counter seating where you can easily drop in by yourself, private rooms where you can relax without worrying about your surroundings, and even a banquet hall. They also offer simple lunch boxes, exquisite arrangements for seasonal festivals or family gatherings, and special meals for memorial services.

Stretched across the northwest corner of Shikoku island, Ehime is a nature-rich prefecture boasting beautiful coastlines and a rural center where mountains play host to 26 of the Buddhist temples that make up the Shikoku Pilgrimage. Matsuyama is home to an original post-feudal castle as well as Dogo Onsen, one of the country's oldest natural hot springs.
