    Kagawa Nakatado-gun Kotohiracho
This is a dye shop at the foot of Konpira Shrine. This historic shop has carried on the traditional Kagawa prefectural art of Sanuki nori-zome (dyeing with glue) for over 100 years. Amidst the current trend of digital print dyes, the Sanuki nori-zome still carefully and painstakingly dyes each fabric by hand using the rice starch. The brightly colored patterns are created by placing rice starch where the color should not adhere. This warm deep-nuanced dyes are used for many prominent occasions, such as for the flags of Shikoku Konpira Kabuki Daishibai theater, the costumes for the ceremonial shishimai lion dances and for the festive flags for fishing boat decking.

Kagawa Areas

around-area-map

Japan’s smallest prefecture, Kagawa, may take up just a small corner of Shikoku, but it has grown increasingly popular with the recognition of Naoshima, its "art island" in the Seto Inland Sea between Shikoku and Honshu. Just a stone’s throw from the islands, mainland Kagawa’s prefectural capital, Takamatsu, holds history in its castle ruins and its pride and joy, Ritsurin Garden, is known as one of the country’s best gardens.
