    Kagawa Prefecture Nakatado-gun Kotohira-cho 892-1
Kotohira-gu Shrine is a Shinto shrine located halfway up Mt. Zozu (which is 521 meters high) in Kotohira Town; it is commonly known as Konpira-san. There are a number of legends concerning the origins of the shrine, all of which suggest a mixture of Shinto and Buddhist influences. Besides the principal kami (deity) of the shrine, O-mono-nushi-no-kami, the spirit of the Sutoku Emperor is also worshipped there. O-mono-nushi-no-mikoto is worshipped as the guardian deity of seafarers. Besides the Homotsu-kan (Treasure Hall) and the Omote Sho-in hall, there are many other fascinating things to see, including the Takahashi Yuichi Hall, where oil paintings by the renowned artist Takahashi Yuichi are on display.

Most visitors pass by this shrine, labouring upwards (or downwards). The other places are free, here you have to pay a (modest) entry fee. But oh so worth it. Stunning art by Maruyama Okyo. For me...

  • Izutama-jinja Shrine (Okusha)

    892-1 Kotohiracho, Nakatado-gun, Kagawa Prefecture
Izutama-jina Shrine's Okusha sanctuary is at 421 meters above sea level. A roughly one-kilometer foot path through dense woods with the feel of a mountain trail brings you to a flight of 1,368 stone steps that lead up to it. There's a terrific view from the grounds that takes in the town of Kotohira, Sanuki Fuji, and even the Seto Inland Sea. The sanctuary honors Izutamahiko-no-Mikoto, the founder of the Kotohira Honkyo. The shrine shop sells amulets and paper omikuji oracles thought to bring good luck.

Takinomiya Tenmangu is Sanuki's god of scholarship. In 886 Sugawara-no-Michizane became Sanuki's governor, living in the official residence located in Takinomiya, Ayananjo County. It's said the shrine grounds are built on the site. The Nembutsu dances that take place annually on the grounds have been designated a National Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property. Lots of visitors come on August 25 for the annual rites to pray for rain and a good harvest. These ceremonies have been held for over 1,000 years.

    892-1 Kotohiracho, Nakatado-gun, Kagawa Prefecture
Asahisha Shrine is on the grounds of Konpiragu Shrine along the approach. It's been designated a Nationally Important Cultural Property. Built in 1837, the main hall is about 18 meters high and made entirely of zelkova wood. It features a double story zelkova hip-and-gable roof structure with copper sheeting. The upper eaves are carved with cirrus clouds, and the spaces between pillars and doors have wonderfully detailed carvings of people, wildlife, and plants.

Kagawa Main Areas

around-area-map

Japan’s smallest prefecture, Kagawa, may take up just a small corner of Shikoku, but it has grown increasingly popular with the recognition of Naoshima, its "art island" in the Seto Inland Sea between Shikoku and Honshu. Just a stone’s throw from the islands, mainland Kagawa’s prefectural capital, Takamatsu, holds history in its castle ruins and its pride and joy, Ritsurin Garden, is known as one of the country’s best gardens.
