"The museum, named after the world's largest coin-shaped sand painting ""Kan'ei Tsuho,"" exhibits approximately 2,000 coins from 125 countries, including coins from various countries and old coins, and provides visitors with an easy-to-understand illustrated explanation of the history and importance of money. For the same admission fee, visitors can also visit the ""Masayoshi Ohira Memorial Museum"" on the second floor."

This doll museum is about an eight-minute walk from the Sakaide Station. The museum is operated and supported by the Kamada Soy Sauce Group, known for its dashi-shoyu. On display in this European style building, within the Kamada Shoyu main factory grounds are 23 differing fantastical ball-in-joint wooden dolls that the artist Simon Yotsuya created. In the Tan Ou Sou gallery, the building itself being a registered Tangible Cultural Property, one can find dolls tucked away in every possible location like the vault, the restroom, and the closets. The Ozawa Tsuyoshi Sanuki Museum of Soy Sauce Art, which displays brush paintings using soy sauce as a medium, and the Kamada Foundation Museum, which preserves and displays historical manuscripts and research works, both adjoin this museum. Many visitors tour all three museums together.

Made of granite quarried in Kagawa Prefecture, its gabled roof has Aoki stone tiles, and the entrance features a copper roofed Chinese cusped gable. Precious items from Kotohira-gu Shrine are on display. Two particularly well-known pieces are an eleven-faced standing image of Kannon, the Buddhist goddess of mercy, and a collection of Portraits of Thirty-six Master Poets. A Buddhist temple connected to the birth of the great priest Kobo Daishi and a part of the Shikoku 20 Bekkaku Temple Pilgrimage, Shikoku 36 Fudo Temple Pilgrimage, and the Sanuki Zodiac Pilgrimage. The temple is famous for always holding a homa ceremony to pray to Acala conducted by mountain Acala priests each month on the 28th, the day of Acala, from 10 a.m. It is said that all kinds of prayers and wishes are granted by coming in contact with the air purified by the ceremonial fires.

After the temple was relocated to its current location and rebuilt by Kobo Daishi in the Heian period, it suffered numerous accidental fires, but even today large numbers of worshippers come here. The temple is the 19th temple on the Shikoku 20 Bekkaku Temple Pilgrimage, and the temple's statue of Vaisravana created in the Heian period has been designated an Important Cultural Property.

This is a reconstruction of the kind of naturally-flooded saltpans developed in the early Edo period for making salt. It adjoins the Utazu-Umihotaru museum, which presents the history and culture of salt making in Utazu. Very few such working reconstructed saltpans exist in the country, and many area elementary and junior high schools make field trips to it. With a reservation made at least 10 days in advance, families and groups can also try making salt using the facility (note that salt making activities may be cancelled due to weather).

This memorial museum is dedicated to Hiraga Gennai – sometimes the inventor, sometimes the writer, and other times the potter, he was a dyed in the wool free spirt who was active in a broad array of fields. Inspired by Hiraga, who hiked across the country to engage in natural history research, the museum is designed around the theme of “walking.” Newly remodeled in 2009, the museum consists of two locations – a main building, and an annex whose grounds enclose Hiraga’s former residence as well as a medicinal herb garden. Here visitors can learn about Hiraga’s extensive achievements through videos and activities. Hiraga’s former residence is located around 500 meters west of the main building and has been designated a National Tangible Cultural Property.

This is a memorial museum, about five minutes by car from Tonosho Port. The museum displays many of the artifacts related to the Taisho period poet, Ozaki Hosai, from whom we have many free-verse haiku, penned during his itinerant life. This location is where he spent the last eight months of his life as the abbot of the Minan Goan, one of the Shodo Island sacred places. One can get a sense of his great achievements and worldview when visiting through the building, which is a replica of the Nangoan during his lifetime. Among the valuable donated artifacts on display are a few of his unpublished works donated by his teacher, Ogiwara Seisensui.

Records state the great monk Kobo Daishi stayed in this area when repair work was being conducted on Manno Lake, and later this temple was erected to protect the lake. The temple was abandoned after being set on fire during war but a portion of it was rebuilt by supporters in 1934. The temple's principal object of worship is a statue of Bhaisajyaguru.

Your home base for sight-seeing in Hikida town, this facility was created by renovating the manor of Izutsuya—a prosperous Edo period merchant who sold sake and soy sauce. The main building has classic tatami rooms and a garden you can visit. Enjoy the restaurant and specialty shops, or experience local traditions with wasanbon die-cutting, and making original gloves or other leather items.

A chosa is a festival float used to carry taiko drums, and such taiko drum floats, which are used in the Chosa Festival events held throughout the city in October, are stored and displayed in this museum. Over 100 chosa exist in the city, and during the festival they create a stunning spectacle as they are gallantly paraded through the streets. The museum also introduces the history of chosa and their decorations, and visitors can experience the thrill of the festival even when it is not being held. Be sure not to miss the area where visitors can strike a full-sized taiko drum, as well as the area where visitors can try shouldering a chosa just like they are carried during the festival.

This is a museum built to commemorate the centennial of the founding of Tadotsu Township. It displays and preserves many of the cultural artifacts and documents pertaining to the growth and development of Tadotsu, which lies on the coast of the Seto Inland Sea. This area flourished during the Meiji era after the restoration and through the early Showa era because of the railroad industry. It thrived as one of the few towns pioneering towards the modernization of Kagawa because its harbor was the port of call for many western-route trade ships. This archival museum houses many documents and artifacts describing the history and growth of the area, including the fact that it was here that the first weather station and electric light company was established in all of Shikoku Island. It was known as the birthplace of modernization for Shikoku.

When making furniture he thought it was important to ""always remember the long life of trees and find a way to make them come alive in their next form."" A visit will give you a real sense of his affection for trees and furniture."

This trademark plate-glassed building is an history library just a three-minute walk from the Showacho Station on the JR Kotoku Line. It opened in 1992 as a place where one can learn about the history of Takamatsu and familiarize oneself with their hometown. The permanent exhibit begins from the prehistoric period, to ancient times, moving to the modern and current eras by introducing unique historic topics. The 3D model of the pleasure boat used by Takamatsu Domain, Hiryumaru, replicated by studying kirie paper drawings, is practically the emblem of the museum. There are also many works of art and documents pertaining to the historic battle site, Yashima, where Genpei joined the famous Genpei War in the late Heian Period.

    Kagawa Sakaide-shi Omicho 2635
Approximately 20 minutes by car via Sakaide Kita Interchange, Takamatsu-danshi Interchange. This old temple sits on the hillside of Mt. Shiromine in Goshikidai—holy mount of Kagawa Prefecture. It is the 81st temple of the Shikoku 88-temple Pilgrimage, and its primary image is Senju Kannon, with protector gods from Eto zodiac venerated in their own respective halls. It is adjacent to the only Imperial mausoleum in Shikoku—Mt. Shiromine—so the Shiromine Daigongen (Sagamibo), one of Japan’s 8 Tengus, is also adored here. On the main path, you can enjoy the grand views of Seto and the Chigo-no-taki Waterfall—the tallest in the prefecture. Most of the buildings are Important Cultural Properties, and with cherry blossoms in spring, hydrangeas in summer, and colored leaves in fall, there is always something to see here.

Kagawa Areas

around-area-map

Japan’s smallest prefecture, Kagawa, may take up just a small corner of Shikoku, but it has grown increasingly popular with the recognition of Naoshima, its "art island" in the Seto Inland Sea between Shikoku and Honshu. Just a stone’s throw from the islands, mainland Kagawa’s prefectural capital, Takamatsu, holds history in its castle ruins and its pride and joy, Ritsurin Garden, is known as one of the country’s best gardens.
