Kikko Park is a multi-function park on what was formerly the site of the residence of the Kikkawa family who were the rulers of the Iwakuni Domain, and also the site of the former Yamaguchi Prefectural Iwakuni Upper Secondary School; it has been selected for inclusion in a list of the “Top 100 Most Historic Parks in Japan.” Several buildings of historical importance are located in or near the Park, including the Kikko Shrine, the Ema-do hall “Kin-un-kaku” (a shrine building where votive pictures are hung), and the Mekata Family residence (an Edo period samurai family home), which has been designated as a National Important Cultural Property. The Park is a wonderful place to view seasonal flowers and tree foliage. Kikko Park is around 20 minutes by bus from Iwakuni Station on the JR Sanyo Main Line.

This is a beautiful park, garden, shrine and koi pond at the base of mountain below the Iwakuni Castle. It is free and serene.

"This theme park in Iwakuni City, Yamaguchi Prefecture is on the site of a mine. The motif of the park is based on the legend of the lost continent of Mu, and the park is divided into 15 zones including temples and a mysterious lake. The ""underground hall"" created in the below ground space is used as a concert hall, and the building in the center ""Yama Hotaru"" is used as guide for general information, restaurants and shops, experience studios, and a large public bath."

I came here with a few friends and we had a great time! I would say that the way it is set up is a bit confusing, but in the end everyone is a winner! It was fun to explore the cave and use your head...

At this botanical garden where flowers and trees are planted in a way that the terrain of Historical Town Yanai is leveraged, you can enjoy seasonally blooming flowers all year-round. Inside the park you’ll also find the Flower Market, where you can buy decorative indoor plants and flowers to liven up your indoor spaces. And it’s not just viewing the flowers, there’s also a greenhouse where you can pick your favorite flowers and plant them in a pot of your choosing.

Well worth 5 bucks for a great stroll, fun playground and beautiful flowers. My 4 year old and baby really enjoyed the open space to explore. The Ferris wheel is sadly just a display piece for their...

The Yahata Lifelong Learning Village is a learning facility with a library, pottery museum and early Showa period farmhouse as a base for handing down the culture of the town. Visitors can learn about unique urban planning and culture through the exhibition of tools and daily necessities used by soy sauce brewers, ship builders, blacksmiths and others. In addition to regular pottery classes, the museum also offers one-day pottery workshops such as forming pottery by hand instead of using a potter's wheel, slab building, and making a pottery lathe."

This museum has a very nice collection. It is worth seeing, but unfortunately, the descriptions is only written in japanese so you might want to ask your friends for translation.

Yamaguchi Areas

around-area-map

Heading west along Japan’s largest island, Honshu, the very last prefecture you’ll reach is Yamaguchi, separated from Kyushu by a small strip of water known as the Kanmon Straits, which the far-reaching harbor city Shimonoseki looks over. With water at every turn, the seafood of Yamaguchi is an indisputable highlight, and we’re not talking just the usual fish dishes - the notorious fugu, or puffer fish, is a Japanese delicacy that was discovered in Yamaguchi prefecture, making it the best place to try it out.
