Steam Locomotive Yamaguchi (Yamaguchi-go) is a steam locomotive that runs the 62.9 kilometer trip from Shin Yamaguchi Station to Tsuwano Station in about two hours. The sight of the powerful locomotive running with its whistle blowing and puffing smoke is impressive. The locomotive is elegant with the nickname “lady”, and each carriage has been tastefully decorated in Western and Taisho-styles. Reservations are required.

Having been fascinated by the lure of steam locomotives since my childhood in the 1950s/1960s, I eagerly awaited the highlight of my short trip to Japan .... an excursion on the retro steam train...

Located in the Mizunoue district of Yamaguchi City, the Toshun-ji Temple is famous as the Bodai-ji (family temple) of the warlord Mori Motanari. It was also formerly the site of the Kokusei-ji Temple built by Ouchi Morimi (a Muromachi era warlord); one remaining vestige of this older temple is the Sanmon gate, which is built in the Shikyaku-mon style (with four supporting pillars and a gabled roof), and which has been designated as an Important Cultural Property. The Toshun-ji Temple was originally constructed within Yoshida Castle in the Akinokuni domain in 1572, but was subsequently relocated several times as the regions controlled by the Mori family changed; the Temple was finally moved to its present site in 1868. Like the Sanmon gate, the Temple’s Kannon-do hall has also been designated as an Important Cultural Property; the hall, which was relocated here from the Taki-no-kannon-ji Temple (a temple associated with the Ouchi family), features beautiful Chinese-style architecture including a Katomado window and a Sankarado paneled wooden door. Worshippers at the Temple are greeted by Chief Priest “Maru”, a dog who has become a media sensation.

    Yamaguchi Pref. Iwakunishi Yokoyama 3
Kikkawa Hiroie, the first leader of the Iwakuni clan, constructed this castle on the summit of Mt. Yokoyama in 1608. However, due to the “one castle per province” order, it was dismantled a mere seven years later in 1615, and government affairs were carried out in a residence at the base of the mountain. The current castle tower was restored in 1962 based on illustrations and diagrams of the castle tower’s original construction, and offers unbroken views of the Seto Inland Sea area including Kikko Park, Kintaikyo Bridge, the city of Iwakuni and Miyajima. Visitors can also see the stone walls of the former castle tower which have been restored according to the stonework techniques of the time.

A Shinto shrine in 1 Chome, Takezaki-cho, Shimonoseki City. This is the place where Minamoto no Yoshitsune prayed for victory at the Battle of Dannoura. It's said to have originated with the worship of a smaller shrine by local fishermen. Honoring the deity of long-lasting good luck in a battle, the flag of the Kiheitai army was also dedicated there in the waning days of the Tokugawa shogunate. The large torii gate and the stairs are lit up at night.

The ""White-robed Kannon Bodhisattva"" is revered as the main idol of worship and it is a branch temple of Kozanji Temple of the Soto sect of Buddhism. In addition to the honorable monuments and the monument for the poetry of Takasugi, visitors can also enjoy the blossoming sal trees, symbolic of the sacred ground, as well other flowering trees in each season."

From then until 1923, when emigration was banned, more than one million Japanese emigrated abroad, and their grandchildren extended to fifth and sixth generations. Inside the facility, you can learn about the hardships of the emigrants who crossed the ocean with their dreams and how they established their lives.

Yamaguchi Areas

around-area-map

Heading west along Japan’s largest island, Honshu, the very last prefecture you’ll reach is Yamaguchi, separated from Kyushu by a small strip of water known as the Kanmon Straits, which the far-reaching harbor city Shimonoseki looks over. With water at every turn, the seafood of Yamaguchi is an indisputable highlight, and we’re not talking just the usual fish dishes - the notorious fugu, or puffer fish, is a Japanese delicacy that was discovered in Yamaguchi prefecture, making it the best place to try it out.
