    Famous for its sea bream fishing nets, Tomonoura in Fukuyama City, Hiroshima Prefecture is where you can find Tomo Higoya, a shop which specializes in sea bream miso. The shop opened in 2013 in an old Edo period merchant house. The sea bream miso is a local traditional dish made by simmering sea bream from Setouchi with locally produced miso and mirin, sake, and soy sauce, etc. The smell of Japanese peppers in the miso arouses a taste that can be enjoyed in various ways such as with rice, or eaten together with a glass of sake, or with ochazuke (boiled rice with tea). They have three kinds of flavors, red, white and sesame. Other things the shop sells include rolled sushi with sea bream miso and laver boiled in soy sauce.

    建物は江戸時代から続いているそうです。鯛味噌が有名です。イートインもできますし、手土産としても利用できます。

    A traditional Japanese confectioner in Fukuyama City, Hiroshima Prefecture that makes and sells confections including their Momiji-Manju (a steamed bun shaped like a maple leaf​), dorayaki (two small pancakes with a red-bean paste filling), and monaka (wafer cake with red bean filling). Some of their more creative sweets are the New Heike Story, A Modern Translation of the Classic Tale of Love and War, which is named after Eiji Yoshikawa’s work, and the summer season only Letter from Autumn Colors. They also make a variety of creative seasonal confections.

    福山東インターの入り口手前の立地もあって、広島銘菓紅葉まんじゅうを購入するにはもってこいです。 また、作りたてをいただけるとあって、よく利用しています。

    A fashionable café located in Tomonoura, a popular tourism area in Fukuyama City, Hiroshima Prefecture. The café is located right next to the Joyato, a stone lantern and harbor marker built in the Edo period which serves as the symbol of the area. The café operates out of a historic old nagaya row house. The café’s pasta, made with organic vegetables and Setouchi seafood, are well-reviewed; its lunch sets, which come with a salad and drink, are also popular. The café also offers a full menu of hearty sandwiches and beverages, as well as café lattes, macchiatos, and other authentic coffee drinks. Beverages can also be ordered takeout.

    夫婦でサンドウィッチ2個オーダー。 店が用意した外のテーブルで食べるようと した時、上空から来たトビに女房のサンドウィッチは攫われて… お店の方は見て見ぬふり…残骸を片付けてその場を離れようとしたら、、店員さんはそそくさとテーブルを店内に片付けてましたw

    A processed seafood shop in Tomo Town, Fukuyama City, Hiroshima Prefecture. The shop sells food stuffs made from seafood from the Seto Inland Sea at Tomonoura, known as Shiomachi no minato (a port for awaiting a favorable tide) as well as other things which go well with rice and cakes, etc. The dried young sardines from the local Hashirijima Island, crispy dried fish used for soup dashi, and their great tasting and firm textured small squid are all popular products. Their original ojako sable cookies made with lots of dried fish are a popular treat with the children.

    This well established store founded in 1886 specializes in houmeishu, or medicinal liquor, and is located in Tomo Town, Fukuyama City, Hiroshima Prefecture. Houmeishu, which was made with sake and herbs from Tomonoura in the early Edo period, became a specialty product of Bingo as a health drink and was served to the likes of the Korean delegation to Japan (in the Edo period) and Admiral Perry. Inside the store with its traces of the Edo period still alive, and in the back where the drinks are stored, visitors can find the houmeishu sake bottles and tools of the trade which were once used to make the drink on display. As well as houmeishu sold in glass bottles, gift boxes and sake bottles, the store also sells houmeishu sweets and specially made honmirin (mirin containing alcohol).

    Famous nationwide as a luxury item offered to the Shogunate by the Fukuyama clan, “houmeishu” is a deliciously rich nectar and Japan's oldest yakumi shu (medicinal sake with mirin). Houmeishuya Tomo Shuzo was founded in 1879, and is currently one of four brewers that produce houmeishu. They sell it in bottles and in bean tokkuri-Bizen pottery handmade by the owner.

    Hatta Houmeishuho brewery submits its spice wine to the Western Wine&Spirits Evaluation Committee—National Research Institute of Brewing—in 2004, receiving extremely high marks for their “Akataru-jirushi Honkaku Houmeishu” which they brew and sell. Using traditional ingredients and brewing methods which existed well before the era of mass production, they offer products in normal bottles, but also in tanuki ceramics for use as gifts.

    Since its foundation in 1855, this direct wholesaler for Okamoto Kametaro Honten has pursued its goal of hygienic and high-quality production while adopting new brewing technologies. It is located at the Nagayamon (a gate and long house for vassals) of Fukuyama Castle, which is designated as an Important Cultural Property for Fukuyama city. You can feel history as you choose some houmeishu and famous sweets or mirin (sweet sake) to enjoy.

    伝統的建造物群保存地区の細い道路に面して立つレトロ建築の一つでした。道路上には「岡亀保命酒本店」の看板が架かり、店舗として営業していました。因みに「岡本家長屋門」は福山市重要文化財に指定されており、福山城内にあった長屋門を移設した旨が紹介されていました。

    福山駅から直ぐ近くの場所で、駅利用者からすれば便利な立地と云えそうでした。岡山地盤の百貨店ですが、地元に根差して営業しているようでしたが、訪問した平日午后の時間帯は閑散とした店内で、郊外型のショッピングモールに太刀打ちするのは厳しそうに感じました。

    福山駅前にある複合ビルで下層フロアに商業施設、上層フロアが住居になっていました。地下にスーパーマーケットがはいっていました。もう少し食事の店がはいっていれば駅前なので観光客にも便利なのかなと思いました。

    鞆の浦にバスで行く途中で車窓から見えたので近くで食事をしたついでに来てみました。自転車を借りていたので来ましたが、徒歩では鞆の浦の常夜燈あたりからは遠いと思います。基本的にはドライブの人の立ち寄り場所だと思いました。バスツアーの立ち寄り場所のようなところかなと思いました。新幹線とバス利用の旅行だったので荷物になるので購入はあきらめましたが、車で1時間ちょっとぐらいの日帰り旅行なら便利な場所かなと思...

There is more than meets the eye awaiting any Hiroshima-bound traveler. Kicking off in Hiroshima city, the Peace Memorial Park, Hiroshima Castle, and Shukkeien Garden offer a couple of days of exploring; however, the real beauty lies along the southern coast of the prefecture. There, a series of islands spreads across the Seto Inland Sea: from the mysterious sea-submerged Great Torii Gate at Miyajima Island to the first half of the islands that connect Honshu to Shikoku via six spectacular suspension bridges.
