    尾道駅から商店街とは反対の方向にあります。お店に入ると外から見たよりも店内はずっと大きかったです。お料理はコースでいただいたのですが、品数も多く満足できました。特にデザートは20種類以上ある中から3品選べ、女性にはうれしいと思います。お値段も手ごろでよかったです。

    Outdoor sculptures are strewn about Ikuchi-jima Island. The artists themselves think about where to install them. They create the pieces with the location in mind before exhibition. There are 17 pieces in all including themes of wind, sea, and musical instruments. Indeed, the whole island is like an art museum, covered with sights to see.

    This is the head temple of the Daigo branch of Shingon Buddhism. It is said to have been founded during the Tenpyo period (729 to 749) by the priest Gyoki. Two-meter straw sandals are presented at the Niomon Gate. Passing through the gate and climbing the 108 stone steps, visitors find a main hall which has been designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan. There are also a three-tier pagoda, a founder’s hall, and a Fudo hall. The temple is famous as a cherry blossom spot, and in season the blossoms are lit-up in the evening so visitors can enjoy the fantastic scene.

    夕方に行ったらはっさく大福は既に完売していました。後から予約済みのお客さんが次から次へと入ってきて尾道観光前に来れば良かった...次回リベンジします。おこわは美味しかったです。

    創業100年のパン屋さん。なんといってもご主人のおばちゃんの人柄がいい。非常に気さくで話好きで本当に自分のおばあちゃんと話してるようで気分が和む。それだけでも行く価値あり。パンはアンパン、ねじりパン、メロンパンの3種類とサイダー、ラムネが購入できます。このサイダーもいいです。ラムネも買いたかったけどサイダーもラムネも結構な値段なので断念。なんか懐かしく心がなごむよいお店です。

    This observatory is located in Setonaikai National Park. Situated on top of 445-meter-high Mt. Ryuo southwest of Mt. Fudekage, the observatory offers one of the best views around of the islands of the Seto Inland Sea. A television tower also stands nearby, and the top of the mountain is maintained as a recreational forest. On clear days, visitors can see the Shikoku Mountains and seven of the 10 bridges on the Nishiseto Expressway. In spring, over 2,000 Yoshino cherries on the mountain come into bloom, and it bustles with visitors as one of the leading cherry blossom-viewing destinations in the prefecture. According to legend, the area as developed by Hatashiro Kunishige, a vassal of the Taira clan, after the clan was defeated in the Battle of Yashima, and in order to differentiate this mountain from the Mt. Ryuo on the north side of the city, some call this Mt. Hata Ryuo.

    This Japanese-style deli food shop is located about 100 meters away from Mihara Station. Originally a sushi and ohagi (red bean jam coated rice cakes) restaurant, today the shop sells handmade ohagi, octopus tempura, karaage fried chicken, inari sushi rice wrapped in fried tofu, and other Japanese-style side dishes. Identifiable by the red shop curtains on either side of the entrance, the shop’s famous octopus tempura is filling and is made using huge, whole octopus legs. It not only makes a great appetizer to enjoy with a tasty alcoholic beverage, it also makes a great souvenir and gift.

    三原港の係員さんにおすすめされて伺いました。 タコ天がものすごく大きく、身もプリプリでおいしかったです。 友人と行きましたが、食べやすくカットして下さりありがたかったです。 また行きたくなりました。

    This sushi and Japanese cuisine restaurant is situated along the Marine Road Shopping Street near the South Exit of Mihara Station. Identifiable by the octopus knickknacks placed out front, here customers can enjoy Mihara’s famous octopus cuisine. The restaurant’s popular, hearty octopus rice meal comes with sashimi, tempura, a sunomono vinegared dish, and octopus rice. The restaurant is highly popular with tourists because it offers a variety of octopus dishes. The omakase (chef’s choice) nigiri sushi meal comes with sushi primarily crafted using local fish from the nearby Itozaki Port, and many customers also choose it in order to experience the many seafood delights of Mihara. The restaurant’s second floor is replete with tatami mat seating perfect for banquets and business entertainment, making the establishment a great destination for all manner of engagements.

    This bridge is one of the seven on the Nishiseto Expressway connecting various islands on the Seto Inland Sea. The third bridge from the Onomichi side, it is 790-meters-long and connects Ikuchi Island and Innoshima Island. The longest cable-stayed bridge in the world at the time of its completion in 1991, it was also the first in Japan to make use of hybrid composite beam construction. The composite bronze and concrete beam technology invented for the bridge was also later used in the Tatara Bridge, which was also the longest cable-stayed bridge in the world at the time of its completion, aiding in the opening of the Nishiseto Expressway. Ikuchi Bridge Memorial Park is maintained at one side of the bridge, and from here visitors can look up at the bridge’s majestic structure.

    This bakery shop is located a seven-minute walk from the Habu Port Passenger Terminal. Identifiable by its old-fashioned, faded yellow canvas awning, the shop makes original breads which have even been featured on television. The shop’s Neji Pan (twist bread) is particularly popular; the vaunted and exquisite bread has a fluffy, chewy texture and is covered with a heaping helping of granulated sugar. The crispy curry bread is also highly popular and it’s not unusual for these tasty breads to sell out before noon.

    Hishio Beach is a wide and shallow swimming beach popular with families, and it is also one of the top clamming spots in the city. From April through June, visitors can gather up to 1.5 kilograms of clams on specified days. This limit can also be increased in units of 100 grams by paying an extra fee. Clamming in bare feet is prohibited, so be sure to bring some long boots. The beach is replete with a free parking area and toilets but does not rent clam-digging tools, so remember to bring a bucket, work gloves, and any other necessary items. As you’ll also need to bring back some seawater, a large, empty PET bottle will also come in handy.

    This bus shelter is located next to the Onomichi Ferry dock on the northern tip of Mukaishima Island. The shelter was originally used as the waiting area for the Yobuko-maru ferry in the director Nobuhiko Obayashi’s film “Goodbye for Tomorrow” released in 1995; the structure was then moved here. Local residents asked for it to be kept intact and put to actual use, and the wooden building seems to exude an aura engendered by this sentiment. The white-walled building is also decorated with small items actually used in the film, as well as an old-fashioned life preserver and a map of the fictional island depicted in the film which was created for the movie.
  • Komyobo Temple

    This Buddhist temple is connected to the Imperial Family, and records state it was founded in 730 by the priest Gyoki on the order of Emperor Shomu. The temple is located a 10-minute drive from the Ikuchijima-kita Interchange on the Nishiseto Expressway. Some of the temple’s many highlights include a 13-tier stone pagoda and a statue depicting a seated Amitabha which is the temple’s principal object of worship, both designated National Important Cultural Properties; and a five-tier stone pagoda dedicated to the wife of Emperor Go-Shirakawa and the great priest Honen. Visitors are also recommended to see a Chinese juniper tree on the grounds which has grown into an extremely unusual and beautiful shape; over 650 years old, the tree has been designated a Natural Monument by the prefecture. In most years, the temple holds a Nehan-e memorial service for Gautama Buddha on the last Sunday in March, and during this event the grounds bustle with visitors.

    This shopping street connects Setoda Port and the Kousanji Temple. The 600-meter-long retro shopping street is lined with over 50 establishments. The old-fashioned shopping street experienced new life after it began being featured in SNS posts by cyclists riding the Nishiseto Expressway. An atmosphere reminiscent of Japan’s bygone Showa period still hangs in the air here; a sign over the entrance to the street states “Welcome to the cyclist oasis.” Shiomachitei is a cafe and bar operating out of a traditional Japanese home building about 200 meters from the Setoda Port-side entrance, and it is a famous rest and maintenance spot for cyclists because cyclists are allowed to bring their bicycles into the establishment.

There is more than meets the eye awaiting any Hiroshima-bound traveler. Kicking off in Hiroshima city, the Peace Memorial Park, Hiroshima Castle, and Shukkeien Garden offer a couple of days of exploring; however, the real beauty lies along the southern coast of the prefecture. There, a series of islands spreads across the Seto Inland Sea: from the mysterious sea-submerged Great Torii Gate at Miyajima Island to the first half of the islands that connect Honshu to Shikoku via six spectacular suspension bridges.
