    Tatara-ohashi Bridge diagonally connects Ikuchi-jima Island in Onomichi City, Hiroshima Prefecture with Omishima Island in Imabari City, Ehime Prefecture. The bridge is the fourth bridge along Shimanami Kaido Expressway, from Honshu and has a beautiful shape like that of a swan spreading its wings over the sea. Tatara-ohashi Bridge is notable for its additional cycling and pedestrian lanes as well as the road exclusively for cars and trucks. If you clap your hands or the wooden blocks at the bottom of the bridge support you can experience the echoing reverberations, known as nakiryu (roaring dragon), as the sound travels up the supports.
  • Neko no Hosomichi (Cat's Alley)

    A narrow hill road some 200 meters long located close to Mt. Senkoji Ropeway Sanroku Station in Onomichi City, Hiroshima Prefecture. The alley is part of the setting of artist Shunji Sonoyama’s “Onomichi Ihatov” spatial project launched in 1997, and it functions as a road connecting old and dilapidated homes which have been renovated and remodeled into art museums, cafes, and restaurants. The area, surrounded by trees and other greenery and enwrapped in an old-fashioned atmosphere, is dotted with other 1,000 “Fuku-ishi-neko,” round stones painted with figures of lucky cats. For generations, large numbers of cats settle around this area, and the alley is also a popular tourism destination which attracts cat-lovers nationwide.

    A stone paved path in Onomichi City, Hiroshima Prefecture that runs almost two kilometers from Jikoji Temple, near JR Onomichi Station, eastwards to Kairyuji Temple. The road is lined with old shop, temples, and shrines, and with the stone walls lining the slopes of the road, you can truly experience Onomichi’s scenery as a town on a hill. It has frequently been used as a shooting location for films.

    This herb garden is located near “Neko no Hosomichi” (Cat’s Lane) in Onomichi City, Hiroshima Prefecture. It is on the site of a renovated Taisho-period building. There are about 100 types of herbs being raised in the garden, which aims to stimulate all five senses. The rich greenery almost gives it the feel of a sorceress’s garden. The spectacular view from the terrace lets you see all the way to the Onomichi Channel. Enjoy a relaxing time in the spacious, old Japanese-style cafe while sipping tea made from freshly picked herbs and enjoying some organic sweets.

  • Mt. Ryuo Observatory

    This observatory is located in Setonaikai National Park. Situated on top of 445-meter-high Mt. Ryuo southwest of Mt. Fudekage, the observatory offers one of the best views around of the islands of the Seto Inland Sea. A television tower also stands nearby, and the top of the mountain is maintained as a recreational forest. On clear days, visitors can see the Shikoku Mountains and seven of the 10 bridges on the Nishiseto Expressway. In spring, over 2,000 Yoshino cherries on the mountain come into bloom, and it bustles with visitors as one of the leading cherry blossom-viewing destinations in the prefecture. According to legend, the area as developed by Hatashiro Kunishige, a vassal of the Taira clan, after the clan was defeated in the Battle of Yashima, and in order to differentiate this mountain from the Mt. Ryuo on the north side of the city, some call this Mt. Hata Ryuo.
  • Ikuchi Bridge

    This bridge is one of the seven on the Nishiseto Expressway connecting various islands on the Seto Inland Sea. The third bridge from the Onomichi side, it is 790-meters-long and connects Ikuchi Island and Innoshima Island. The longest cable-stayed bridge in the world at the time of its completion in 1991, it was also the first in Japan to make use of hybrid composite beam construction. The composite bronze and concrete beam technology invented for the bridge was also later used in the Tatara Bridge, which was also the longest cable-stayed bridge in the world at the time of its completion, aiding in the opening of the Nishiseto Expressway. Ikuchi Bridge Memorial Park is maintained at one side of the bridge, and from here visitors can look up at the bridge’s majestic structure.

There is more than meets the eye awaiting any Hiroshima-bound traveler. Kicking off in Hiroshima city, the Peace Memorial Park, Hiroshima Castle, and Shukkeien Garden offer a couple of days of exploring; however, the real beauty lies along the southern coast of the prefecture. There, a series of islands spreads across the Seto Inland Sea: from the mysterious sea-submerged Great Torii Gate at Miyajima Island to the first half of the islands that connect Honshu to Shikoku via six spectacular suspension bridges.
