Rokai Boat is a sightseeing boat powered by hand which takes tourists to see the floating Itsukushima Shrine in Miyajima Town, Hatsukaichi City, Hiroshima Prefecture. The boat leaves every 30 minutes or so only during the day at high tide. Boat trips last for approximately 20 minutes. In the time of the shogun, Taira no Kiyomori, it is said that it was proper for a visit to the shrine be made by boat. It is still possible to relive the experience of passing beneath the great torii gate as it would have been at the time. Photos can be taken of the torii gate and Itsukushima Shrine from the boat. Tourists can enjoy the scenery of Miyajima, a world heritage site, while listening to the gently lapping waves and guided commentary. Boats do not depart at low tide.

This pleasure boat affords tourists great views of the natural beauty of the Taishakukyo Gorge scenic spot which typifies the Hiba-Dogo-Taishaku Quasi-National Park. The journey takes about 40 minutes around the 24 kilometer circumference artificial lake, known as Shinryu Lake, centered inside the gorge. Along the boat trip are many things to see such as the 40 meter high natural bridge, Onbashi Bridge, and the red bridge, Momiji Bridge. The changing view of all the trees dotted between the limestone rock walls from season to season is wonderful, with most tourists coming to visit during the autumn when the colorful leaves are at their best. The boat pier is about 10 minutes by car from Tojo Station, or get off at the Shinryu-ko bus stop.

The entire trip requires about 25 minutes and takes passengers on a cruise along the Ota River, passing by the Genbaku Dome (Atomic Bomb Dome), a World Heritage Site, on the way. The boat, which used to be used by the Huis Ten Bosch theme park in Nagasaki, has a very exotic design. Feel the gentle breeze on top of the water and experience Hiroshima in a way that walking can’t match. • Fukuyama Tomonoura Sea Bream Net Fishing
    Travel / Tourism
    Hiroshima Fukuyama-shi Tomocho Sensuijima Island
This traditional fishing method has been practiced for some 400 years. A veritable early summer tradition in the Tomo-cho area, visitors can observe the fishing from sightseeing boats. As six fishing vessels head out to sea and before they start fishing, the Tairyobushi, a stirring song and dance performance incorporating taiko drums, is performed in offering to Otohime, envoy of Benzaiten, to pray for a safe voyage and a big catch. Afterwards, in a spectacle observers are sure never to forget, the fishing vessels bring in their nets just as they did in ancient times, capturing schools of fish. The practice was stopped temporarily due to World War II but was revived in 1949. In 2015, it was designated an Intangible Folk-Cultural Property by Fukuyama City.

Hiroshima Areas

around-area-map

There is more than meets the eye awaiting any Hiroshima-bound traveler. Kicking off in Hiroshima city, the Peace Memorial Park, Hiroshima Castle, and Shukkeien Garden offer a couple of days of exploring; however, the real beauty lies along the southern coast of the prefecture. There, a series of islands spreads across the Seto Inland Sea: from the mysterious sea-submerged Great Torii Gate at Miyajima Island to the first half of the islands that connect Honshu to Shikoku via six spectacular suspension bridges.
