This is a temple of the Koyasan sect of Shingon, located in Miyajima Town, Hatsukaichi City, Hiroshima Prefecture. It is said that it was founded during the Heian period, but details are unknown. It is believed that in the Kamakura period the temple was restored by a priest named Ryokai; and the temple was responsible for the repair and construction of Itsukushima Shrine. The temple is also known to hold many Buddha statues such as a wooden statue of the Buddha of Healing, an Important Cultural Property. “Itsukushima Benzaiten”, one of the three major Benzaitens (Sarasvati) in Japan, transposed from Itsukushima Shrine due to the decree to separate Buddhism and Shintoism, is secured in the main hall, and is worshipped as the Goddess of Worldly Benefits. It is a spot where many worshipers wish for business prosperity, safety in the home, and fulfillment of major wishes.

Beautiful temple just next to the Itsukushima Shrine and well worth a visit. It has a beautiful authenticity and old world charm. Lovely wooden statue of a old man who looks a like a philosopher to...

    Hiroshima Pref. Takeharashi Tadanoumichou
A small island four kilometers in circumference located within the boundaries of Setonaikai National Park. Known as Rabbit Island due to the 1,000 wild rabbits which inhabit it, Okunoshima is visited by large numbers of domestic and international tourists seeking to be soothed by the sight of these cute bunnies. There are also many rabbit-themed statues on the island which make for popular photo spots. At the same time, the island was the location of a poison gas plant operated by the former Imperial Japanese Army during World War II, and today many remnants of the army's facilities still stand. The Okunoshima Poison Gas Museum presents materials from that time period in an effort to convey to current generations the terror of war and the importance of peace.

"Even though a mere 380 meters from the blast center, this was a robust building, so it did not receive structural damage. It resumed business operations two days after the blast and was used until 1992. It's one of the buildings in the blast that remains today. Designated as an Important Cultural Property by Hiroshima City, it is open to the public. In May of 2019, a permanent display of Hiroshima City materials, the ""Modern Hiroshima History and Migration to foreign countries,"" opened in first floor basement."

Bumped into this walking through the city streets, dont know if it had access, I didnt see any. it looks old enough to have been one of the surviving buildings, but dont think so.

Tenneiji Temple, a temple of the Soto school of Zen Buddhism, located about 15 minutes’ walk from Onomichi Station, is said to have been founded by Fumyo Kokushi through donations by Yoshiakira Ashikaga in 1367. Yoshiakira built the temple as a five-story pagoda but it was later changed to a three-story pagoda known as Kaiunto, now designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan. The view from the tower overlooking the city and the sea is one of the highlights of Onomichi. The 526 statues of Buddhist saints in the Rakando Hall is a must-see. A so called Sasuri Hotoke-san statue (literally, “rubbing Buddhist statue”) stands to the left in the temple’s main hall, and legend has it that your illness will get cured when you rub the same part of the statue’s body to where you feel sick. From April through to May, the cherry blossom and peonies show their full splendor in the temple grounds.

Love the architecture of the temple. While its not a must see, if youre in town, its worth adding to your itinerary.

This is an archive located on Ookunoshima Island in Takehara City, Hiroshima Prefecture. The island was once a poison gas manufacturing plant of the former Japanese Imperial Army and producing a large amount of poison gas weapons until the end of the Second World War. It was opened in 1988 to convey the horrific past and sacrifice of many lives during the poison gas manufacturing process. The museum exhibits artifacts from officials at the time, and material related to poison gas production. On the island, there are also traces of canons, electric power plants, and poison gas reservoirs.

The museum is good for giving more context about the abandoned buildings scattered around the island, and the islands history. Most of the descriptions are in Japanese, but we were given a guide in...

This building was constructed in 1929 by Osaka’s Taishoya Gofukuten (a kimono shop), and features a ferro-concrete construction, which was unusual at that time. Sales areas with show windows occupied the space from the first floor up to the third floor, customers were allowed to enter with their shoes on, and the rooftop offered a view of the city. The atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima in August of 1945, and as this building was only 170 meters from the bomb’s hypocenter, the roof was flattened, the interior was also destroyed and the entire structured burned down except for the basement. Somehow a prototype of the building was restored after the war and from 1982 it has been used as a rest house for the Peace Memorial Park.

Located right in the Peace Park there are washrooms as well as a tourist Info site. Upstairs there are also a couple of displays upstairs that was worthwhile visiting for free.

A museum housed in the Former Official Residence of the Commander-in-Chief of the Kure Naval Station, a National Important Cultural Property built in 1905, located inside Irifuneyama Park a 13 minute walk from Kure Station. The museum building consists of a wooden Western-style structure as well as a Japanese-style hall. The Western portion of the building has a British-style exterior; the drawing room, decorated with rare “kinkarashi” gold patterned Japanese leather paper is a must-see. The grounds are also dotted with cultural properties and facilities where visitors can learn about the history of Kure since the Meiji period, including a hall dedicated to local culture, historical folk custom exhibit, and small clock tower once used at the former Kure naval arsenal.

This is a temple which was considered to have been built by Kuya Shonin in the middle of the Heian period. The Taichoro Reception Hall was built in 1694 as the reception hall of Fukuzenji Temple, and it was used as a reception hall to host Korean envoys. As the building and related artifacts from the time of the envoy have been preserved, the hall was designated as a National Historic Site as the “historic ruins used for the Korean envoy on the grounds of Fukuzenji Temple” in 1994.

This is one of the leading ancient temples of the Chugoku region. Located in Onomichi City, Hiroshima, it is the head temple of the Senyuji school of the Shingon sect. This two-tier, National Important Cultural Propert-designated pagoda stands on a hill on the west side of Itsukushima Shrine. Records state the pagoda was built by the priest Shukan in 1523. The basic shape of the pagoda’s exterior is purely Japanese in style, while the detailing displays Zen-style characteristics; it is also unusual in its construction consisting of a round upper level, square lower level, and square upper and lower roofs. The pagoda is the place where the Sue army first took up position during the Battle of Miyajima; today, the area is famous for its cherry blossoms in spring. The pagoda is also lit up at night, and many tourists take photographs of Itsukushima Shrine with this beautiful tower in the background.

An elementary school (the former Fukuromachi Senior Elementary School) in Naka Ward, Hiroshima City, Hiroshima Prefecture, situated just 460 meters from the atomic bomb blast center. All of the wooden school buildings were destroyed by the blast from the atomic bomb and a large number of children and teachers who failed to evacuate were killed. The outer shell of the west wing of the school building with its reinforced concrete was all that remained. It was used as a relief center for victims of the blast and as a place to search for lost relatives and students. Even today you can still see the messages that people wrote with chalk remaining on the walls. Part of the west wing is now open to the public as a museum where visitors can see the message walls and other things from that devastating day.

There is more than meets the eye awaiting any Hiroshima-bound traveler. Kicking off in Hiroshima city, the Peace Memorial Park, Hiroshima Castle, and Shukkeien Garden offer a couple of days of exploring; however, the real beauty lies along the southern coast of the prefecture.
