This long-established Japanese confectionery shop is located in the Kurashiki Bikan Historical Quarter of Kurashiki City, Okayama Prefecture and opened in 1877. It is the shop that created the famous Kurashiki sweet “Murasuzume,” which is made by taking a thin crepe and coating the browned side with coarse sweet red bean paste and wrapped in the shape of half moon. You can purchase Murasuzume made by expert bakers, and can even try your own hand at baking some. It takes about five minutes, and you can choose between regular and jumbo sizes. Visitors will take turns making them after applying.

This Japanese confectionery has over 160 years of history, stretching back to 1856. They worked to improve millet kibigashi, which had a very short shelf life, and used rice-flour gyuhi to create soft kibidango dumplings. These were loved by the Lord of Bizen at the time, and the Meiji Emperor. The package has an adorable picture of folk-tale hero Momotaro done by famous picture book artist Taro Gomi, making it popular with locals as well. In addition to old fashioned kibidango, they also have various flavors like matcha or peach.

This venerable Japanese confectionery has over 180 years of history. Their famous Ote Manju buns were particularly loved by Ikeda, Lord of Bizen Domain, and stories say he made sure they were served at every tea ceremony he attended. "This French-style patissier has a wide variety of cookies and cakes. This shop stands out for its elegant exterior amidst a residential district a block off Kencho-dori Avenue, near to Kenchodori Station on the Okaden Higashiyama Line. The talented woman making all this learned French cooking at Daikanyama, Tokyo's IL PLEUT SUR LA SEINE. The shop is based on the concept of ""A place that gets your heart racing the second you step inside,"" and is filled with short cakes, cookies, quiches and other French baked goods. • Bashoan Okamoto Main Store
    Gourmet / Alcohol
    Okayama Okayama-shi Kita-ku Omotecho 1-9-62
This venerable confectioner was founded in 1909 on Omote-cho shopping street in Nakano-cho. The shop was named after Matsuo Basho by the first owner, a fan of the poet. They use select ingredients like local Bitchu white adzuki beans for their white an bean paste, and Hokkaido-grown adzuki for their black an. Both are made to an unchanging recipe going back to its founding. Their famous Asahikawa treats are colored light pink, white and light blue for a beautiful contrast, and were offered to the Showa Emperor on his visit to Okayama. Their Beniyokan bean jelly is made after the recipe supposedly used by Toyotomi Hideyoshi at his Jurakutei tea parties, and is but one of their many delights, all refined over the years by craftsmen not content just to follow tradition.

The whole first floor of the building is taken up by the market, and there are fresh produce and seafood shops, as well as cafes and restaurants. They also have regular events, which draw crowds of customers. It began in 1946 as Okayama Market, and was made to offer an alternative to the post-war black market where people could buy in safety. It currently not only serves as a food wholesale point, but also distributes the safe, secure taste of Okayama to private customers.

This venerable Japanese confectioner is near Ibara Railways Yakage Station. It dates back over 180 years, and has been known for its Yubeshi treats made with locally grown yuzu citrus since the Edo period, and was an apparent favorite of Atsuhime, the wife of Tokugawa Iesada. In the eight generations since their founding, they have added to their Yubeshi, with seasonal flower-topped Irodori hana-senbei, Hanayuzu, yokan bean jelly, and so on. Each of them is made by hand, with care and skill, and offers a taste of the seasons.

Located a 15-minute drive from the Oku Interchange on the Okayama Blue Line. This shop specializes in making paste foods made with the natural seasonal specialty ingredients of the Seto Inland Sea. Ever since the shops founding in 1951, they've continued to use the same traditional stone-ground techniques in the making of their healthy fried kamaboko fish paste. Highly recommended is their Irodori assortment of individually wrapped freshly made fried kamaboko. Also popular is their Nakamitsu Tempura Assortment B Set which contains two Yakinuki non-fried pieces of kamaboko and an assortment of 14 pieces of tempura including rolled Ushimado cabbage and fried nori seaweed rolls with Japanese yams.

A 11-minute drive from the Tamashima Interchange on the Sanyo Expressway. A bakery run by a brewery that has produced miso and soy sauce since the late Edo period. The name of the shop comes from the Portuguese for Hand-made. The popular well known Misopan is made with a dough containing miso and black sesame seeds topped with a salty-sweet miso cream. Also recommended is their unique Makizushi (Sushi Roll) Bread in which a whole sushi roll is wrapped with bread dough. The bakeryhas a cafe space where you can enjoy your bread with a coffee or other drink.

This Japanese confectioner offers variety of fruit daifuku (rice cake), primarily strawberry daifuku with a whole strawberry inside. The number of different combinations of fruit and red bean paste that they offer depends on the season but they usually have 15 to 20 different varieties. Their flagship Strawberry Daifuku has been sold since 1988 and is very popular with its large sweet strawberries covered in moderately sweet red bean paste. Also recommended are their seasonal flavors including their Momotaro Grape Shiro-an, which wraps a large juicy seedless Momotaro grape with white bean paste, and their Apple Daifuku in which they cover sweet simmered apple pieces with custard.

Okayama Areas

around-area-map

Overshadowed by Hiroshima to the west and the Kansai region to the east, Okayama is an easy spot to miss but a nature-rich gem where the Seto Inland Sea laps at its toes and peach and grape farms complete its interior. One of Japan’s Three Great Gardens, Koraku-en in Okayama city is well worth a visit before progressing to Kurashiki, where preserved wooden Edo buildings line the picturesque canal.
