Senyakuto is an old style public bathhouse in the Yunotsu hot spring resort of Ohda City, Shimane Prefecture. Boasting a history of more than 1,300 years, day visitors can enjoy the hot spring water which has been used as a hot spring since long ago. There are three bathtubs in the bathhouse filled with yellowish brown hot water, each with a different temperature. Across the road is Chomeikan, an inn run by Senyakuto. It is a splendid Japanese-styled three storied building built for the benefit of visitors wishing to stay for a long period of time to take advantage of the therapeutic effects of the hot spring waters.

"This day-trip hot spring facility is a natural carbonate spring that is rare in Japan. It is said that it warms bodies from the core and is said to treat such ailments as nerve pain, joint pain, digestive diseases and skin diseases. In addition to the standard baths, you can enjoy a medicinal bath, tsuboyu ""jar"" baths constantly replenished ""kakenagashi"" style, and sauna. You can also eat meals at the adjoining restaurant without using the hot spring facilities. There are side dishes such as rice balls, noodles, minced meat cutlets and fried chicken, as well as rice bowls using local ingredients, daily set meals and a set with items chosen by the chef. You can enjoy it leisurely after bathing."

    すれ違いができないような細い道を通ってたどり着く温泉施設です。 とても雰囲気があってゆっくりできます。小さめな施設ですが、浴槽の種類も多くありました。 これからも近くにきた際には立ち寄りたいです。

A day trip hot spring bath facility located in the Yunotsu Onsen hot spring resort district in Ohda City, Shimane Prefecture. The bathhouse’s Western-style structure is highly colored by the old-fashioned atmosphere of the Taisho Roman movement. This natural hot spring bath facility was the only one of its kind in the San’in region to receive all five stars, the highest score, by the Japan Hot Spring Association in 2005. The waters used in the facility’s baths, constantly flowing from a 100% natural hot spring source, have been used for medicinal purposes since ancient times, and are a favorite of bathers for warming you right to the core and for preventing illness. The facility has an old fashioned rest area and rooftop garden terrace offering a view of the Iwami Ginzan Silver Mine and hot spring resort district, which are registered together as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Shigaku Yakushi Tsuru-no-yu is public baths located in the Sanbe Onsen (hot springs) area, in Shigaku, Sanbe Town, Ohda City. The hot springs water has high iron content and turns brown when it comes into contact with the air, which makes for an interesting bathing experience. Another appealing aspect of these baths is the sheer power with which the water gushes out.

  • Yunotsu Onsen

    Shimane Oda-shi Yunotsucho Yunotsu
The port of Yunotsu was once perfectly positioned to ship the silver from and send supplies to the Iwami Ginzan Silver Mine, now a designated World Heritage Site. Even today, the hot spring district which stands along the Yunotsu Highway extending away from the port still retains much of the atmospheric, old townscape dating to this heyday period, and here visitors can delight in the flavors of the Sea of Japan, the history of the area, and hot springs. The waters of the district were discovered some 1,300 years ago; long renowned for their curative properties, the waters are still praised for their healing effects today. There are two public bathhouses in the district, the Motoyu-senyakuto and the Yakushiyu, and both fill their tubs with only real hot spring water straight from the source, making no use of additional waters or heating whatsoever. The waters of the area's common salt spring contain earth deposits; cloudy in color and hovering around 50° C in temperature, the yunohana flower-shaped crusts they cause attest to the high concentration of minerals dissolved in them. At the nearby Yakimonokan climbing kiln, situated on the side of a hill on the eastern side of the district, visitors can try their hand at making authentic Yunotsu ware pottery.

This elegant and old hot spring district, situated at the southern foot of Mt. Sanbe, has flourished for over 200 years since Kansei era. The district encompasses two old-fashioned public bathhouses and around 10 hot spring lodging facilities. The waters of the area's chloride springs are said to treat such ailments as nerve pain, rheumatism, muscle soreness, stiff shoulders, lower back pain, joint pain, fatigue, sprains, gastrointestinal disorders, sensitivity to cold, high blood pressure, and diabetes. The baths at almost all of the facilities here are constantly replenished from a source spring kakenagashi style. The Kame no Yu bathhouse, closely connected to the local community; and the Yakushiyu, a bathhouse popular with tourists; are seen as the symbols of the district. There are also many sightseeing destinations in the area where visitors can take in the abundant local natural beauty, such as Mt. Sanbe National Park, which encompasses picturesque Mt. Sanbe; and Nishi no Hara, scenic grassland where cows are left to graze from spring through fall.

Shimane Areas

around-area-map

What Shimane prefecture lacks in size and population, it makes up for in scenery and ancient mythology. Izumo-taisha, in the middle of the prefecture, is said to be Japan’s oldest Shinto shrine, where stories that delve into the creation of the Japanese race have been passed down over centuries. The 180 Oki Islands, a 40-minute ferry ride north of Sakaiminato, offer an undiscovered paradise well off the beaten track.
