Continuing for over 200 years since the late Edo period, Arakiya is the Izumo soba shop with the longest history. It is located in a quiet residential area and features a folksy, relaxed interior. Carefully chosen local Izumo soba flour is placed in a stone mill, quality well water is added, and round herring dashi (soup stock) is used to create the elegant taste. While soba supplies last. Approximately 10 minutes on foot from Taisha Station on the Ichibata Electric Railway.

This soba restaurant serves amazing handmade Japanese soba noodles. You can get them hot or cold. I ordered the 3 tiered cold soba served 3 ways. The one with the raw egg was my absolute favorite...

A renowned Izumo soba restaurant located close to the front gate of the Izumo Taisha Grand Shrine a five minute walk from Izumotaisha-mae Station. The restaurant was originally established as a small sweet shop serving shrine visitors, so that it began to serve soba noodles. The restaurant’s vaunted noodles are handmade every morning using a stone mortar to grind flower from select domestic gen-soba buckwheat. Tanakaya’s soba is notable for its firm body, chewy texture, and abundant flavor, and they go perfectly with the restaurant’s rich broth made from round herring stock and a locally produced soy sauce. Two of the most popular items on the menu are the sanshoku warigo, soba noodles with three different toppings; and the simple zaru soba, plain noodles served over a bamboo draining basket.

Lovely soba. The 3 styled chilled soba is a must try. The queue can get big so get there early. Staff is also very friendly. Highly recommended!

Kaneya is a soba restaurant founded in 1929 in Taisha Town, Izumo City, Shimane Prefecture. The restaurant is famous for donating its soba to the people at the Izumo Taisha Grand Shrine festival. With its good old, simple, private house-like appearance, the store is loved by many well known people with lots of autographs decorating the walls of the restaurant. Kaneya offers authentic Izumo soba, freshly ground, freshly kneaded, and freshly boiled. Their most popular dish is the sanshoku-wariko, with three toppings on a bowl of soba noodles. The noodle’s broth with the sweet flavors of urume iwashi (sardines) and konbu seaweed coming through is particularly well liked.

At the Ippuku Taisha Shinmon-dori Store, you can enjoy firm handmade soba with a secret, mellow dashi (stock). The original soba sweets available at the adjacent café are also quite popular. You can bring a pet along if you use terrace seating. A lot of souvenirs are available too, so this place is always lively. The most popular souvenir is “sobakarinto.” The new shichimi (seven spice) flavor offers a moderate sweetness with a sharp spicy aftertaste. One minute on foot from Izumotaisha-mae Station on Ichibata Electric Railways.

Amaemon is a Japanese style cafe located in front of the main gate of Izumo Taisha Grand Shrine, a popular spot for worshipers taking a break between visiting the shrine. The tasteful interior of the shop is noticeable with its thick beams standing out from the plastered walls. In addition to their specially made parfait packed with lots of green tea, fruits and rice flour dumplings, their aimori-daifuku zenzai, a deliciously sweet hot zenzai (red bean soup) with ice cream filled daifuku-mochi (rice cake stuffed with bean jam), is also popular. Heiwa Soba is an Izumo Soba noodles restaurant that serves hand-made noodles made using locally-grown brown buckwheat; the buckwheat flour used to make the noodles contains some buckwheat chaff, which helps to give the noodles an especially rich flavor and dark coloration. Since the restaurant was founded in 1950, it has maintained a consistent emphasis on the quality of its hand-made Soba noodles, which are among the Izumo region’s most famous local specialties; Heiwa Soba is so popular that it sometimes has to close early because it has run out of noodles. Enjoy Izumo soba dishes in the relaxed atmosphere of the refurbished Japanese-style room of a private house which opened in 2014 on the shrine path to the west of Izumo Taisha Shrine. The high quality domestically grown stone milled buckwheat flour is made into soba noodles carefully by hand every morning. The soba is rich in flavor and very popular. Recommended dishes include the tororo grated yam soba and soba with duck and seasonal vegetables.

Not a fancy restaurant, therefore a great atmosphere and good soba. 賑やかな道よりすこし離れています、とても落ち着いた店内で、シンプルなメニューでゆっくり食事のできる良いお店です。

They offer a delicious zenzai that is not too sweet with soft rice cake that is made from local Shimane Prefecture Nita rice and large sized red beans from Hokkaido. At this specialty restaurant, you can enjoy the flavor of the Izumo soba. Although the restaurant does have set opening hours, it closes as soon as the soba is sold out, so it is recommended to visit earlier in the day.

Since it was founded in 1715, this long established store has been selling ginger flavored sweets using age-old recipes passed down from father to only one son. Using only shussai ginger with its small amount of fiber and unique sweetness and aroma, the old-fashioned ginger sweets, made by melting the juice and sugar together over a charcoal fire, produce a delicately fresh aroma and refreshing sweetness with a hint of ginger spiciness coming through. The store also sells sugar with powdered green tea, ginger tea and seasonal ginger sweets. The historical store building that was rebuilt from the ashes of the Great Fire in 1876 and then further refurbished in the early Heisei period is also one of the highlights. The nearest station is Unshu-Hirata Station.

Shimane Areas

around-area-map

What Shimane prefecture lacks in size and population, it makes up for in scenery and ancient mythology. Izumo-taisha, in the middle of the prefecture, is said to be Japan's oldest Shinto shrine, where stories that delve into the creation of the Japanese race have been passed down over centuries. The 180 Oki Islands, a 40-minute ferry ride north of Sakaiminato, offer an undiscovered paradise well off the beaten track.
