An ancient Shinto shrine standing on Cape Hinomi in Taisha Town, Izumo City, Shimane Prefecture whose name is recorded as the “Misa Gisha” in the ancient text of the “Izumo no Kuni Fudoki.” “Hinomisaki Shrine” is in fact the collective term for two shrines—the Hishizumi no Miya, dedicated to the goddess Amaterasu-omikami; and the Kami no Miya, dedicated to the god Susanoo-no-mikoto. The shrine (more specifically, the Hishizumi no Miya), famously protects Japan’s night, as opposed to Ise Jingu shrine, which protects Japan’s day. Must-see highlights include the red, two story granite torii gate and the honden main shrine building, built in the gongen-zukuri style and decorated with spectacular ornamentation outside and splendid images on its inner walls and ceilings.

Very nice place like Kyoto palace. also has hidden shrine. Everyone should it . nice place for photography.

A long-standing Izumo soba restaurant founded at the end of the Edo period. This famous restaurant has served several emperors starting with Emperor Taisho. The restaurant’s legendary soba, flavorful and superb in texture, is made with local ingredients, and the buckwheat is ground with the husk using a stone mortar. The restaurant hand makes its soba noodles twice a day, ensuring diners can enjoy fresh made, fresh cooked soba whenever they visit. One of the most popular items on the menu is the warigo soba, soba noodles served with a three tier wooden warigo lunch box, a style characteristic of Izumo soba. The restaurant’s set meal options and the soba course, only offered here at the honten flagship location, are also well reviewed. The nearest station is Izumoshi Station.

I have heard of the famed Izumo Soba, Shimane Prefecture being one of the best in the whole of Japan. This place was recommended by TripAdvisor since it was so close to the hotel that I was staying...

An ancient Shinto shrine located in Izumo City, Tottori Prefecture which is even mentioned in the ancient “Izumo no Kuni Fudoki,” a book describing the culture and customs of the region. The shrine is primarily dedicated to the god Susanoo-no-mikoto, who, according to Japanese legend, slew the fearsome eight-headed dragon Yamata-no-orochi. It is said that this area was the last place Susanoo-no-mikoto pioneered, after which he gave it his own name and passed away. In addition to a towering Japanese cedar tree over 1,300 years old, the shrine’s grounds are dotted with spots deemed the “Seven Wonders of Susa.” The shrine is famous for the three rituals conducted during the annual festival held on April 19 as well as the Kiriaki Shinji, a ritual called the Nenbutsu Odori (“Buddhist Prayer Dance”) conducted on August 15. In recent years, the shrine has also become popular as a mystical “power spot.”

This place is acclaimed as one of the most spiritual places in Japan. The vibe in the air was very sacred. The 1,300 year old cedar tree was magnificent and felt like it was cleansing the air. There...

Continuing for over 200 years since the late Edo period, Arakiya is the Izumo soba shop with the longest history. It is located in a quiet residential area and features a folksy, relaxed interior. Carefully chosen local Izumo soba flour is placed in a stone mill, quality well water is added, and round herring dashi (soup stock) is used to create the elegant taste. While soba supplies last. Approximately 10 minutes on foot from Taisha Station on the Ichibata Electric Railway.

This is a museum located in Omori Town, Ota City, Shimane Prefecture, introducing the history and mining technology of Iwami Silver Mine, a World Heritage site. The exhibition content is arranged in a way that is easy for both adults and children to understand, focused mainly on models, images and replicas. The permanent exhibit also features a diorama of the entire silver mine and actual silver ore that can be held. A limited guided walking tour of the mine’s largest tunnel “Okubomabu” is also popular.

I spent 6 hours to go around the village and the former mining place. The village has 405 residents. The mining activities started from 1300s until 1900s. If you just look into that statistics and...

A renowned Izumo soba restaurant located close to the front gate of the Izumo Taisha Grand Shrine a five minute walk from Izumotaisha-mae Station. The restaurant was originally established as a small sweet shop serving shrine visitors, so that it began to serve soba noodles. The restaurant’s vaunted noodles are handmade every morning using a stone mortar to grind flower from select domestic gen-soba buckwheat. Tanakaya’s soba is notable for its firm body, chewy texture, and abundant flavor, and they go perfectly with the restaurant’s rich broth made from round herring stock and a locally produced soy sauce. Two of the most popular items on the menu are the sanshoku warigo, soba noodles with three different toppings; and the simple zaru soba, plain noodles served over a bamboo draining basket.

Lovely soba. The 3 styled chilled soba is a must try. The queue can get big so get there early. Staff is also very friendly. Highly recommended!

Kaneya is a soba restaurant founded in 1929 in Taisha Town, Izumo City, Shimane Prefecture. The restaurant is famous for donating its soba to the people at the Izumo Taisha Grand Shrine festival. With its good old, simple, private house-like appearance, the store is loved by many well known people with lots of autographs decorating the walls of the restaurant. Kaneya offers authentic Izumo soba, freshly ground, freshly kneaded, and freshly boiled. Their most popular dish is the sanshoku-wariko, with three toppings on a bowl of soba noodles. The noodle’s broth with the sweet flavors of urume iwashi (sardines) and konbu seaweed coming through is particularly well liked.

A store specializing in Izumo zenzai (red bean soup) on Shinmon-dori Street in front of the main gate of Izumo Taisha Grand Shrine. It is an antenna shop of the Nihon Zenzai Gakkai (Japan Zenzai Association) aiming at providing more delicious Zenzai from Izumo, said to be the birthplace of zenzai. Inside the store which is run from an old private house, are some rustic looking wooden tables. In addition to the Izumo zenzai with its red and white dumplings in a large grained adzuki bean zenzai, their enmusubi zenzai, which is associated with Izumo Taisha Grand Shrine, is also popular. The nearest station is Izumotaisha-mae Station.

It is elegant and plain sweetness. Please eat this Zenzai at once. It’s crowded there so wait a moment.

At the Ippuku Taisha Shinmon-dori Store, you can enjoy firm handmade soba with a secret, mellow dashi (stock). The original soba sweets available at the adjacent café are also quite popular. You can bring a pet along if you use terrace seating. A lot of souvenirs are available too, so this place is always lively. The most popular souvenir is “sobakarinto.” The new shichimi (seven spice) flavor offers a moderate sweetness with a sharp spicy aftertaste. This is the private residence of the Kumagaya family who were prominent traders working as government officials attached to the silver mine. The architecture of this large scale residence which consisted of a main house, five outhouses and storehouses on a plot of about 1,500 meters squared exemplifies the social status of this trader at the end of the Edo period. As a result of there being many household implements from the Edo through the Showa period on display, it is a place where you can experience the beauty and profundity of a Japanese residence. You can also get to experience cooking rice on a stove after chopping firewood.

Shimane Areas

around-area-map

What Shimane prefecture lacks in size and population, it makes up for in scenery and ancient mythology. Izumo-taisha, in the middle of the prefecture, is said to be Japan's oldest Shinto shrine, where stories that delve into the creation of the Japanese race have been passed down over centuries. The 180 Oki Islands, a 40-minute ferry ride north of Sakaiminato, offer an undiscovered paradise well off the beaten track.
