    Shimane Pref. Izumoshi Taishachoukidukikita Inasa
A sandy beach located about a kilometer west of the Izumo Taisha Grand Shrine in Izumo City, Shimane Prefecture. The beach appears in the “Kuni-yuzuri,” a legend relating the transfer of the rulership of Japan to the gods of Heaven described in ancient texts such as the “Kojiki” and the “Nihonshoki,” as well as the legend of the “Kuni-biki” written in the “Izumo no Kuni Fudoki.” Highlights include a sheer cliff where the gods Okuninushi and Takemikazuchi negotiated for the transfer of the ownership of the land; and Bentenjima, an island where the goddess Toyotama-hime is enshrined. Two famous Shinto rituals are conducted on the beach—the Shiokumi Shinji, held early on the morning of the first day of every month; and the Kamimukae no Shinji, held on the 10th of October according to the old calendar. The beach’s waters are shallow and the coast is beautiful, and many people come here in summer to swim and enjoy beach going.

This shrine is the origin of the Kunibiki-shinwa myth and to attain victory. Also, it is famous as the shrine where Kato Kiyomasa and Katagiri Katsumoto worshipped for and was granted success when Toyotomi Hideyoshi ordered the invasion of Korea. The pine tree where they worshipped remains in the precinct of the temple. The large Izumo-style knotted straw made from 1,500 rice straws is also worth seeing.

During the Yayoi period, huge Yosumi burial mounds were created in the Izumo region, which involved a considerable expenditure of time and effort. Nishidani Tomb No. 3 is an example of the perfected form of the Yosumi burial mound; the Izumo Yayoinomori Museum, which is located near the Nishidani tombs, shows visitors how the Izumo rulers were buried, making effective use of large models. The Museums’ permanent exhibition showcases some of the large quantity of earthenware vessels that were excavated from Nishidani Tomb No. 3, and also has displays on Izumo in the Yayoi period. There is an experiential activity area where visitors can try their hand at making Yayoi-style clothing and necklaces, etc.

This hot spring bathhouse is one of the largest in the Chugoku region to offer 100% natural, free-flowing hot spring baths in which no water is re-heated or diluted. The bathhouse' 165-square-meter outdoor rock bath is like a veritable garden and is particularly popular, and prospective customers are particularly encouraged to bathe in it at night while gazing at the star-filled sky above. In the Yuan restaurant, customers can enjoy the seasonal tastes of Shimane, and savor delicate cuisine enwrapped in a relaxing Japanese atmosphere for both lunch and dinner.

Daiunzan Kokokuji belongs to the Myoshinji school of Rinzai Zen Buddhism. It's about a five-minute drive from Tabushi station on the Ichibata Electric Railway. The temple was built in 1322 by the Zen priest Koho Kakumyo with contributions from the Yasukuni clan who ruled locally. The rock garden to the north of the study was created from the middle to late Edo period. It is a quaint garden that incorporates the scenery of the reservoir at Mt. Tabushi and a traditional dry landscape garden characteristic of Zen temples. Trees growing around the pond give the viewer even more of a sense of brightness and grandeur. The garden has appeared time and again in the American publication Journal of Japanese Gardening.

A long-standing Izumo soba restaurant founded at the end of the Edo period. This famous restaurant has served several emperors starting with Emperor Taisho. The restaurant’s legendary soba, flavorful and superb in texture, is made with local ingredients, and the buckwheat is ground with the husk using a stone mortar. The restaurant hand makes its soba noodles twice a day, ensuring diners can enjoy fresh made, fresh cooked soba whenever they visit. One of the most popular items on the menu is the warigo soba, soba noodles served with a three tier wooden warigo lunch box, a style characteristic of Izumo soba. The restaurant’s set meal options and the soba course, only offered here at the honten flagship location, are also well reviewed. The nearest station is Izumoshi Station.

The Mii Shrine, which is mentioned in some of Japan’s oldest historical records, including the Kojiki (“Records of Ancient Matters”) and the Fudoki (local gazetteers), is dedicated to the worship of Konomata-no-kami, a deity who is also mentioned in these ancient records. Konomata-no-kami is the god of childbirth and water, and so the Mii Shrine became famous as a place to come to pray for a safe and trouble-free birth. There are three wells at the Shrine which are said to be among the oldest in Japan: the Iku-i Well, dedicated to the water god of safe childbirth, the Saku-i Well, dedicated to the water god of children’s wellbeing, and the Tsunaga-i Well, dedicated to the water god of children’s longevity.

A natural hot spring about eight minutes by car from Izumo Taisha Grand Shrine. Enjoy the soft geothermal water while taking in the scenery of the Kitayama Mountains, which appear in Izumo mythology. A simple hypotonic alkaline hot spring, the high-quality water is gentle on the skin. It assists with nerve pain and aiding recovery from fatigue and is known for making the skin moist and smooth. Japanese-Western private rooms at the facility have table seating. An ample food and drink menu includes items like a grilled Shimane Wagyu beef set, simmered fish meal set, and Shokado boxed lunch (reservation required by the day before). A kids' lunch is also available.

Shimane Areas

around-area-map

What Shimane prefecture lacks in size and population, it makes up for in scenery and ancient mythology. Izumo-taisha, in the middle of the prefecture, is said to be Japan’s oldest Shinto shrine, where stories that delve into the creation of the Japanese race have been passed down over centuries. The 180 Oki Islands, a 40-minute ferry ride north of Sakaiminato, offer an undiscovered paradise well off the beaten track.
