Shinjiko Nature Museum Gobius is an experiential-learning type aquarium that showcases the plants and animals that live in Lake Shinji, Nakaumi Lagoon and Shimane Prefecture’s rivers. In all, there are around 10,000 organisms belonging to approximately 200 different species. Shinjiko Nature Museum Gobius attracts large numbers of visitors (particularly families) throughout the year.

This sheer 250-meter cliff is part of the Kuniga Coast in the national park on Nishinoshima Island, part of the Oki Islands. The whole area, including the Matengai Cliff, has been designated a National Place of Scenic Beauty. The precipitous faces of these rough basalt coastal cliffs worn down by the movement of the sea look as though they were cut with a knife. The area has been chosen as one of Japan's top 100 sunset viewing spots. About two kilometers of boardwalk connect the Matengai Cliff and Kuniga Beach. It's not so far, but as there is also a 250-meter difference in elevation, getting there and back takes from 60 to 90 minutes.

Definitely need a car to access this incredible spot, or hiking for a day. But the surreal view is worth it, with the shining sea and gust of air. I felt out of Japan, out of Earth!

According to tradition, the Gakuen-ji Temple was founded by the monk Chishun Shonin in 594. There are many legends about the famous warrior-monk Benkei associated with the Temple; Benkei is said to have studied at the Temple for three years starting from the age of 18, and to have sought refuge there after the Battle of Dan-no-Ura in 1185. During this later stay at the Gakuen-ji, Benkei is said to have carried the temple bell of the Daizen-ji Temple to the Gakuen-ji in the space of one night (covering a distance of around 100 kilometers); this bell has been designated as a National Important Cultural Property.

If you get there, you will fall in love with Fall (the season). The tree leaves, the passage into the temple are extremely great, I loved it so much. Be prepared for a long interesting walk. The are...

This is a shinto shrine is located in Suga, Daito Town, Unnan City. It is called Nihonhatsunomiya as it originates from Sugamiya which was made after Susanoo-no-mikoto defeated Yamata-no-Orochi. It is also said to be “the birthplace of waka (a type of Japanese poem)” as Susanoo-no-mikoto read the oldest Waka in Japan. The Waka goes “I am trying to build a place in Izumo to take a new wife, and the multifold fences look like overlapping clouds”. On the path leading to the shrine, there are 60 stone poem monuments built.

It was a nice experience. We washed with the shrine water and saw how people perform their prayers in a calm and a peaceful environment

The Yurahime Shrine, which is located in Urago, Nishinoshima Town, Oki County, is renowned as the most prestigious Shinto shrine in Oki and is also called Okinokuni Ichinomiya. The Shrine features in the “Ika-Yose” legend, according to which the goddess Yurahime-no-mikoto was bitten on the finger by a squid while trailing her hand in the water as she was crossing the sea in a boat; as a penance for this evil deed, every year large numbers of squid would throw themselves onto the beach in front of the Yurahime Shrine. This phenomenon is not seen so often now, but apparently in the past large numbers of squid did indeed land on the beach, and traces of this can still be seen today, for example in the watchman’s huts that were erected on the beach to keep watch for a potential good catch of squid.

Nice little shrine that matches mythology (squid princess) with reality (port location where squid congregate). There is a sumo ring outside

"This shrine is located near Oki Folk Museum in the island town of Oki. First built in the Age of the Gods, the grounds of burial mounds from the later Kofun period(250--538 as a rough guide) still remain on the premises. Described in the Engishiki Jinmyocho (register of shrines in Japan) as a Myojin Taisha or the principal shrine of Oki province, the principal shrine god is Mizuwakasu-no-Mikoto, who guarded the Sea of Japan and the development of Oki province. The Mizuwakasu Shrine Sairei Furyu Festival, one of the three great festivals of the Oki Islands, is held on May 3 every even-numbered year. In addition, it was the stage of the film version of ""Konshin"" written by Kawakami Kenichi and that covered sengu sumo, classic sumo performed once every 20 years."

This group of cherry trees is on a levee of the Hii River flowing in Kisuki-cho, Shimane Prefecture. About 800 Yoshino cherry trees have been planted along a roughly three-kilometer stretch, and they all burst into bloom at once when the season comes. It's been selected as one of the Top 100 Cherry Blossom Viewing Sites in the nation by the Japan Cherry Blossom Association. Paper lanterns hang along the levee when the trees are in bloom, and the Kisuki Sakura Festival features a variety of events over a two-day period during the season.

A Soto Zen Buddhist temple surrounded by forest. It has been designated a prefectural Tangible Cultural Property as the family temple of generations of Tsuwano Castle feudal lords including the Yoshimi, Sakazaki, and Kamei clans. Rarely seen today, the superb thatched roof was reconstructed in 1779. It contrasts strikingly with features like the white plaster walls, stone walls, and old pillars. The majestic grounds have been designated as a part of the Tsuwano Feudal Lord Kamei Family Graveyard National Historic Site. The graves of the first Tsuwano feudal lord, Sakazaki Naomori, and the great Meiji period writer Ogai Mori are also on the premises.

This is the private residence of the Kumagaya family who were prominent traders working as government officials attached to the silver mine. The architecture of this large scale residence which consisted of a main house, five outhouses and storehouses on a plot of about 1,500 meters squared exemplifies the social status of this trader at the end of the Edo period. As a result of there being many household implements from the Edo through the Showa period on display, it is a place where you can experience the beauty and profundity of a Japanese residence. You can also get to experience cooking rice on a stove after chopping firewood.

Shimane Areas

around-area-map

What Shimane prefecture lacks in size and population, it makes up for in scenery and ancient mythology. Izumo-taisha, in the middle of the prefecture, is said to be Japan’s oldest Shinto shrine, where stories that delve into the creation of the Japanese race have been passed down over centuries. The 180 Oki Islands, a 40-minute ferry ride north of Sakaiminato, offer an undiscovered paradise well off the beaten track.
