    Shimane Kanoashi-gun Tsuwanocho Honmachi 3
A Japanese sweet shop in Tsuwano, also known as San'in's Little Kyoto. They mainly sell the famous Tsuwano confection known as Genji-maki from a shop decorated with seasonal bonsai trees. Genji-maki is made from high-quality koshi-an bean paste wrapped in a dough made with the richly flavored eggs. It originated with the Yoshimi feudal lords ruling from Tsuwano Castle who revered the Genji gods. It's sliced into three equal parts, making it an easy snack to have at work or home. In addition to the standard koshi-an bean paste, they also sell versions with their own original bean paste. Their range of seasonal confections includes daifuku sweets made with local strawberries from Kimura Farm, sakura-mochi rice cakes that are only available in spring, limited edition summertime pudding, and soft red bean jelly.

Shimane Kanoashi-gun Tsuwanocho Ushiroda Ro 59-13
A restaurant in Tsuwano, also known as San'in's Little Kyoto. Facing the Tsuwano River, the shop has an old-fashioned feel and offers light fare such as inari sushi and noodle dishes like udon and soba. Their unusually dark inari sushi is popular. Simmered slowly with a traditional sauce that's been handed down from generation to generation, the savoriness of the condensed soy sauce shines through. Because the vinegared rice also has a strong flavor, it goes great with the lighter soup stocks of the udon and soba noodles. The bite-sized inari sushi is available for takeout and makes a great gift after visiting Inari Shrine.

"This soba shop is about a 10-minute drive from Matsue-Shinjiko-Onsen Station. This shop has a truly homey atmosphere, as they've simply added customer seating to a private house, and offers up a historic style that's been handed down through the famous Matsue shop Matsumoto Soba since the Edo period. Their popular Kama-age Soba noodles made from hikigurumi (whole buckwheat flour) is a treat of savory aroma. This Kama-age soba is chewy without breaking, giving it a toothsome texture that fills the mouth with soba aroma with every bite. It comes with richly seasoned broth on the side for customers to mix and match to their own tastes. This shop's reputation has spread as it's become a favorite of local soba professionals and experts, called ""soba-lier"" that is not a sommelier."

Shimane Areas

around-area-map

What Shimane prefecture lacks in size and population, it makes up for in scenery and ancient mythology. Izumo-taisha, in the middle of the prefecture, is said to be Japan’s oldest Shinto shrine, where stories that delve into the creation of the Japanese race have been passed down over centuries. The 180 Oki Islands, a 40-minute ferry ride north of Sakaiminato, offer an undiscovered paradise well off the beaten track.
