A café in Ohda City, Shimane Prefecture operating out of a remodeled building which once belonged to Yakushiyu, the oldest hot spring bathhouse still in existence in the Yunotsu Onsen hot spring district. The stately wood building was constructed in 1919 and is notable for its Western-style design, including beautiful stained glass windows in its white walls, as well as the graceful arches under its eaves. The café makes use of the former men’s changing area and has an old-fashioned atmosphere highly reminiscent of Japan’s Taisho Roman style. The café offers food such as homemade Japanese-style curry and “Edo period bugyomeshi,” a dish whose recipe was once handed down among the Naito family, whose members served as village headsmen in the area for generations. The café’s onsen cappuccinos, decorated with Japan’s hot spring mark, are also popular.

Since it was founded in 1715, this long established store has been selling ginger flavored sweets using age-old recipes passed down from father to only one son. Using only shussai ginger with its small amount of fiber and unique sweetness and aroma, the old-fashioned ginger sweets, made by melting the juice and sugar together over a charcoal fire, produce a delicately fresh aroma and refreshing sweetness with a hint of ginger spiciness coming through. The store also sells sugar with powdered green tea, ginger tea and seasonal ginger sweets. The historical store building that was rebuilt from the ashes of the Great Fire in 1876 and then further refurbished in the early Heisei period is also one of the highlights. The nearest station is Unshu-Hirata Station.

Shimane Areas

around-area-map

What Shimane prefecture lacks in size and population, it makes up for in scenery and ancient mythology. Izumo-taisha, in the middle of the prefecture, is said to be Japan’s oldest Shinto shrine, where stories that delve into the creation of the Japanese race have been passed down over centuries. The 180 Oki Islands, a 40-minute ferry ride north of Sakaiminato, offer an undiscovered paradise well off the beaten track.
