Camping / Auto Camping Spots in Shimane Area

  • Tachikue-kyo Gorge
    Leisure / Hobbies
Shimane Pref. Izumoshi Ottachichou Hisashi Hisayoshi 5263-14
This roughly two-kilometer gorge is along the upper reaches of the Kobe River in Shimane Prefecture. The lovely scenery you observe from the banks of the river was carved out of the area's andesite surface stone by the flow of the water over the eons. There are about ten distinctive rock formations with names like Byobu-iwa, Tengu-iwa, and Shinki-iwa. You'll find promenades, suspension bridges, rest facilities, and lookouts along the river, offering a variety of spectacular views. Near Mt. Tachikue's Reikoji Temple, there are images of Buddhism's five hundred arhats carved from the bedrock.
  • Mt. Sanbe Kitanohara Camp Site
    Leisure / Hobbies
    Shimane Oda-shi Sanbecho Tane 1121-1
A 30-minute drive from Odashi Station on the San-in Main Line and a 45-minute drive from the Yoshida-Kakeya Interchange on the Matsue Expressway. Sprawling at the northern foot of Mt. Sanbe, one of this campground’s biggest features is the fact that you can choose from among four different camping locations. There’s a auto campground where you can drive your vehicle right up to your tent, perfect for beginners; a general campground recommended for those looking to fully enjoy roughing it in the great outdoors; cabins equipped with a variety of amenities; and bungalows where campers can stay with their dogs. Visitors can also make a campfire, try a fun obstacle course, and go barbecuing. Note that in winter a portion of the campground’s facilities are closed.

Shimane Main Areas

What Shimane prefecture lacks in size and population, it makes up for in scenery and ancient mythology. Izumo-taisha, in the middle of the prefecture, is said to be Japan’s oldest Shinto shrine, where stories that delve into the creation of the Japanese race have been passed down over centuries. The 180 Oki Islands, a 40-minute ferry ride north of Sakaiminato, offer an undiscovered paradise well off the beaten track.
