An enormous tree on the precincts of Kasuga Shrine, said to have originated from Kasuga Taisha Shrine in Nara. Estimated to be 1,000 years old, it's on a steep slope near the torii gate on the approach to the shrine. Considered sacred since ancient times, it is about 15 meters high and its diameter at eye level is 9.7 meters; its branches stretch 27.5 meters east-west and 21.6 meters north-south, covering a total area of about 660 square meters. The enormous trunk dividing into several boles not far from the ground is a sight to behold. In a survey conducted by the Environment Agency in 1989, it was recognized as one of the largest trees in Japan along with an enormous Suda-jii beech tree in Yakumo Village, Shimane Prefecture.
