"A museum located at the foot of Mt. Utsubukiyama with its tales of heavenly maidens, about 20 minutes by car from Kurayoshi Station. In a modern building with white walls and a shed roof, the museum is split into art and history sections. There are exhibits on local history and culture. The entire premises, including the waterways in the courtyard, symbolize Kurashiki's cityscape. In 1975, it won the Building Contractors Society Award. In addition to displaying the work of local writers such as Maeta Kanji and Suga Tatehiko, they also hold public commendation projects and feature exhibits. Maeta and his peers are known as ""Local Treasures,"" and this is a special chance to see their work up close."

    Tottori Kurayoshi-shi Higashiiwakuramachi 2280-3
This townhome was built in 1760. It is said to be the oldest of the extant merchant homes in Kurayoshi. Consisting of a main building and annex, the residence was built in the sukiya-shoin-zukuri-style. The Makita family, to whom the residence belonged, were some of Kurayoshi's most well-known merchants; because of their close connection to the wealthy Yodoya merchant family (who famously built the Yodoya Bridge in Osaka with their own funds), they were also known as the Kurayoshi Yodoya. After renovation work conducted from 2007 to 2008, the main building and annex are both now open to viewing by the general public. The city's Dairenji Temple, to which the Makita family was connected, is the location of several generations of heads of the Yodoya family, each of whom took the name Yodoya Seibe, and many tourists visit both this residence and the temple.

"A Jodo school Buddhist temple about a 10-minute drive from Tottori Station. It is said the temple began as a thatched hut in 1508 near today's Tottori Kita Junior High School. It is famous for its ties to the master swordsman Araki Mataemon, known for his involvement in one of Japan's ""Three Biggest Acts of Revenge."" There are numerous artifacts on display that were used in the 1634 duel, including swords and chain mail. The sliding doors in the temple kitchen with whimsical pictures of arhat drawn by Takagi Hyakusetsu are a big draw."

"Legend says San'in's oldest garden was visited by Emperor Go-Daigo when he was exiled to the Oki Islands at the fall of the Kamakura shogunate. It's one of only two early Edo period ""crane and tortoise"" gardens left in the country, the other being at Kyoto's Saihojji Temple, also known as the moss temple. The small ornamental pond style garden has a bit of a Horai Garden feel. Designed after natural scenery, the pond has an island representing ""Shinsen Island"" as a prayer for prosperity. Designs that became formalized in the Edo period can be seen throughout the garden; it has been registered as a National Site of Scenic Beauty. Be sure to call in advance before visiting."

A historic structure about a 10-minute walk from Chizu Station. It was built during the Meiji and Showa periods as a residence of the Ishitani branch family, which played a major role helping advance the local community through modern times. Originally a traditional merchant-style machiya structure, it was destroyed by fire in 1889 and later rebuilt around 1897. With a large alcove and long veranda facing the garden, its frontage is more extensive than other local merchant houses, telling of the family's former prosperity. It has been designated a National Tangible Cultural Property because, along with the attached Western-style house, it typifies the architectural processes of such residential structures.
