    Tottori Pref. Tottorishi Hakuto
"The Hakuto Beach is an area of coastline located at the western end of the Tottori Sand Dunes. It is famous as the setting for the legend of the White Hare of Inaba, which is recorded in the Kojiki (""Record of Ancient Matters""). Special features include the view of the Oki Islands, from which the White Hare crossed over to the mainland by getting Wanizame (sea-monsters or sharks) to line up in a row so that he could jump from one to another, and the beautiful scenery created by the eroded rocks that resemble stepping-stones. Visitors can enjoy strolling along the coast and soaking up the unique atmosphere that its mythological connections have imbued it with, and in the summer they can enjoy sea-bathing and surfing. Near the beach is an area which is the southernmost point in Japan where Rosa rugose (Sweetbriar), a National Treasure Protected Species, grows in the wild; in early summer, visitors can see the Sweetbriar in bloom. Due to its associations with the legend of the White Hare of Inaba, Japan's earliest love story, the Hakuto Beach has been designated a Lover's Sanctuary Project site."
