Some of the Chugoku region's most prominent marshes lie in a valley 400 meters above sea level amidst the highlands extending east of Mt. Inaba a 30-minute drive from JR Iwami Station. Marshes of various sizes are scattered along a stream and Osawa Pond in the area; a habitat for some 100 varieties of march plants, it has been designated a National Natural Monument. The area is famous for its colony of rabbitear irises, which bloom from mid-May to early June. Interestingly, the rabbitear irises which grow here will fail to take root if transplanted elsewhere. Carnivorous plants such as the round-leaved sundew also grow here.

    Tottori Sakaiminato-shi Taishomachi
A three-minute walk from JR Sakaiminato Station. This much talked about tourist destination was built in March 2008 in the Yokai Plaza situated on Mizuki Shigeru Road. Visitors can have fun looking for the cute bronze statues of characters based on mythical Japanese yokai monsters created by Shigeru Mizuki, including Kappa no Sanpei, a kappa (mythical Japanese water creature), a tanuki (raccoon dog), an azuki-arai, a gangi kozo, a sazae-oni, Shonbenkozo (Mannekin Pis-style Kitaro fountain) no Kitaro, swimming Nezumi-Otoko, and Akuma-kun. Note the spooky gouts of mist the fountain also emits! Visitors are also recommended to check out the 177 yokai statues which dot the Mizuki Shigeru Road.

  • Golden Gate (Kinmon)

    Tottori Saihaku-gun Daisencho Daisen
"This gap between two steep cliffs looks as if a giant boulder has been cut in half. The cliffs, towering overhead, were likened to a torii gate, and the site is a sacred place where warrior monks would engage in ascetic training. The northern face of Mt. Daisen can be seen from the gap in the sheer cliffs, and the impact the naturally rough cliff walls rising steeply on either side engender has made this one of the top photography destinations around the mountain. It is also said to be the sacred stone door which the Eight Great Dragon Kings opened on the orders of the manifestation of the Buddha according to the doctrine of pratityasamutpada, after which two diamond birds descended and spoke of the virtues of the Buddha and the hermit Chikaku placed a sign calling it the ""Kinmon"" (""Golden Gate""). In June when the area is adorned with spectacular fresh verdure, visitors can enjoy the stunning sight of the sun setting between the small gap in the cliffs."

An enormous tree on the precincts of Kasuga Shrine, said to have originated from Kasuga Taisha Shrine in Nara. Estimated to be 1,000 years old, it's on a steep slope near the torii gate on the approach to the shrine. Considered sacred since ancient times, it is about 15 meters high and its diameter at eye level is 9.7 meters; its branches stretch 27.5 meters east-west and 21.6 meters north-south, covering a total area of about 660 square meters. The enormous trunk dividing into several boles not far from the ground is a sight to behold. In a survey conducted by the Environment Agency in 1989, it was recognized as one of the largest trees in Japan along with an enormous Suda-jii beech tree in Yakumo Village, Shimane Prefecture.
