This hands-on sightseeing facility located in Kamiakizu, Tanabe City, Wakayama Prefecture used to be wooden elementary school building. There’s a farm restaurant with a buffet offering locally produced food, a farmers’ market, a workshop where you can make sweets using locally produced oranges and such, an archive about oranges, and more. The classrooms and hallways exude a Showa-period school atmosphere. There’s also a lodging facility.

We spent 1 night at this wonderful place before embarking on the Kumano Kudo hike. We booked the accommodation through Oku Japan (self-guided walking tours) and as part of that booking, we were able...

"Located a five-minute drive from the Nanki Tanabe Interchange on the Hanwa Expressway, this is a base for ""locally grown, locally consumed"" food in JA Kinan, and it is the largest farmers' market in the region. Varieties of sweet mandarin oranges are available throughout the year, and since free samples are provided, customers can ""try before they buy."" The food sold here, whether it is saury sushi, miso, pickled vegetables, or bread, is all handmade on local farms, using locally sourced ingredients whenever possible, for a real homemade taste. There is also a wide selection of locally produced dried plums and tea products. From time to time, events are held in which customers can try harvesting mandarin oranges or plums or arranging flowers."

  • Akitsuno Farmers' Market Kitera
    Wakayama Tanabe-shi Kamiakizu 1487-1
"This is located a ten-minute drive from the Nanki Tanabe Interchange on the Hanwa Expressway. The local people provided the funds to found a farmers' market and operate it themselves. They take advantage of a climate and landscape where mandarin oranges, navel oranges and other citrus fruits can be harvested throughout the year, and a wide variety of seasonal citrus fruits are always displayed at the entrance to the store, all of them locally grown. The ""Oranchi juice"" produced onsite is also popular. The neighboring coffee shop Ikora Chaya is a good place to relax while drinking coffee that has been roasted in-house."
