You’ll also find Kishu dried plums, kelp, wakame sea vegetable, local sake, sweets made from orange and plum, and more. There’s even a rest area you can use while waiting for the train.

    You’ll find this cafe in the hills of Shirahama Town in Nishimuro County, Wakayama Prefecture. The two-story log cabin really brings out the feel of the wood. The tables are made of zelkova wood and there’s a hearth as well, giving the interior a very homey feeling. You can see the sun set over the Pacific Ocean from the deck thanks to the cafe’s great location. You’ll feel like you’re at a resort as you enjoy their famous organic coffee and sweets made with local “Jabara” citrus fruit.

    This yokan (sweet bean jelly) specialty shop is in Kushimoto Town, Higashimuro County, Wakayama Prefecture. It opened in 1900 and operated over four generations before closing down once. The current owner used recipes he found in his grandfather’s Buddhist altar to recreate the original taste. The shop’s flagship product is the “hon-neri yokan,” of which only 200 can be produced daily. Each one is carefully made using Hokkaido azuki beans and agar from Osaka. The shop was recently awarded first place at the Monde Selection competition. The surface is crispy and has a unique dry texture.

    Located in Shimomisu, Tanabe City, Wakayama Prefecture, this longstanding dried plum producer opened in 1897, and this is the main factory’s direct sales store. The large interior carries many varieties of dried plums, with a focus on Kishu Nanko plums, as well as plum liquor with the scent and taste of ripe plums, various plum-based ingredients, and more. There’s an eating space as well. The staff offer a popular free tour that explains the manufacturing process, and there’s an adjoining gallery with art exhibitions related to plums as well.

    You’ll find this teahouse in front of “Meotosugi” near the Kumano Kodo pilgrimage route “Daimonzaka” in Nachikatsuura Town, Higashimuro District, Wakayama Prefecture. It makes a great rest stop, and they even rent out Heian period clothing. They have “eboshi” noble headgear for men, traveling costumes for women, children’s clothing, and more in a variety of colors and sizes. You can get photos taken in costume and even walk to Kumano Nachi Taisha Grand Shrine while wearing them.

The thick cuts of tuna sashimi are especially popular. There are also a la carte dishes and sets, and the place is busy in the afternoon and evening.

The area is referred to as “Ki’s Matsushima” because its beauty is said to rival that of Matsushima, considered one of Japan’s three most scenic spots. You can see “camel rocks,” “lion island,” “crane island,” which is famous for its caves, and Yamanari Island, where it is said Taira no Koremori drowned himself after his defeat. You can also get off at the Taiji Whale Museum partway through and catch another boat afterwards. Kii-Katsuura Station is the closest station to the pier.

    This shrine is located in Tanabe City, Wakayama Prefecture and is affectionately referred to as “Gongen-san” due to it being called Tanabe Shrine after the transfer of the deity “Kumano Gongen” here. Kumano Betto Tanzo, said to be Musashibo Benkei’s father, is said to have held a cockfight in front of the main shrine in order to decide which side to support during the Genpei War. He ended up supporting Minamoto and leading the Kumano navy to victory. You’ll find statues of Tanzo and Benkei on the shrine grounds, and treasures such as the pot used to give the infant Benkei his first bath and Minamoto no Yoshitsune’s flute are kept here. Near the start of October, many visit for the “Benkei Festival.”

There’s whale cutlet curry made from minke whale and finback whale featuring succulent meat and special curry roux that is sure to stimulate the appetite. You can also enjoy whale sashimi to experience the true whale flavor, as well as “harihari nabe” hot pot (reservations required).

There’s a showroom where various Nachiguro products are sold, such as “kuroame Nachiguro” and “tokusei kokuto karinto (fried cookies).” There’s also brown sugar made from sugar cane from Tokunoshima of the Amami archipelago and other Nachiguro products that really make you feel the blessings of Nangoku.
