    Wakayama Pref. Tanabeshi Ryujinmuraryujin 170-3
This roadside station on National Route 371 features an extended building reminiscent of a dragon's body. Forestry is Ryujin Village's main industry. As you enter the facility, you're welcomed by enormous pillars made from 350-plus year old southern Japanese hemlock, and local wood is used throughout the building. The sales area is replete with wooden products including tables and chairs, and the restaurant overlooking the Hidaka River serves coffee brewed with spring water. They don’t mind if you bring lunch with you to the facility.

    Wakayama Pref. Nishimurogunshirahamachou Tsubaki 1058-1
This roadside station is on National Route 42 approximately five minutes by car from JR Tsubaki Station. Shirahama Town's Tsubaki area is famous for its natural hot springs that are said to be great for the skin. While it has the regular roadside station services like tourist information and special products, it also has a footbath and a public bath where you can enjoy their free-flowing hot spring water. Their family bath is a nice way to have a soak together. Buying a book of entry tickets will provide you a discount on each bath. They have a vending machine where you can purchase hot spring hot water too. Their eatery serves such regular dishes as set meals and rice bowls.

Wakayama prefecture Higashi Muro gun Kushimoto cho the river of lottery 1549-8
This roadside station on National Route 42 is approximately seven minutes by car from JR Kushimoto Station. The Hashigui-iwa Rock is a National Natural Monument. As the facility's name suggests, you can get a good view of it from the premises. There's a clear view from the observation deck of the unique scenery of its 40 large and small formations scattered offshore. The roadside station is a good place for a quick bite to eat there with items like French fries and fried yakisoba noodles, and their soft serve ice cream made with locally grown ponkan oranges is especially popular. The facility's shop sells lots of items featuring plums and jabara citrus. It's open 365 days a year.

A special attraction is the Susami Municipal Aquarium of Crab and Shrimp right next door. Another shop on the premises sells freshly caught local fish.

This roadside station on National Route 42 where the Kumano Kodo's Nakahechi Trail intersects with the Ohechi Trail is widely used as a base for sightseeing. The prime location has a variety of nearby attractions such as Daimon-zaka, Nachi Falls, and Kumano Nachi Taisha Shrine. Nachi-eki Kouryu Center is on the premises, as well as a farm stand selling handmade items like mehari-zushi rice balls and jam. Its Kumano Nachi World Heritage Information Center showcases local history, and its Nishikinoyu hot spring facility is open until 22:00. Nachi Beach is just a short walk away.

    Wakayama Pref. Tanabeshi Ayukawa 997-1
This roadside station on National Route 311 is often used as a base for exploring Tanabe City's Oto area. With mountains and rivers close by, you can enjoy a variety of seasonal activities like fishing and viewing the colored leaves in the fall. Their shop offers local specialty products like Kinzanji-miso and lots of seasonal items including wild vegetables and ayu sweet fish. Oto is a wood production area, and their exchange hall holds highly popular woodworking classes. Their restaurant's Inaka Bento lunch boxes (limited to eight a day) and Kumano-no-Ankake udon noodles get good reviews.

"This roadside station on National Route 311 is easily recognizable as the building looks like a big bamboo hanagasa hat. As it faces the Kumano Kodo's Nakahechi Trail, people walking the ancient pilgrimage route stop in for a rest as well those traveling by car. The shop sells a popular item called ""konnyaku inari,"" sushi rice tucked in a slightly spicy konnyaku gelatin pocket, as well as jabara citrus juice and candies that have been featured on television. Their restaurant's ume plum buckwheat soba noodles come recommended."

  • Roadside Station Tanabe City Ryujin Gomasan Sky Tower
    Travel / Tourism
    Wakayama Pref. Tanabeshi Ryujinmuraryujin 1020-6
This roadside station is half-way along National Route 371, the Koya-Ryujin Skyline. It provides access for climbing nearby Mt. Gomadan and Mt. Ryujin, and the colorful autumn leaves of November aren't to be missed. As you might guess from the facility's name, it has a lookout tower. Thirty-three meters tall, it resembles the stacks of wood used in the Goma fire rituals of esoteric Japanese Buddhism. There's a great view of the nearby mountains and the ocean, and it's the perfect spot for taking in the night sky, too. Shiitake-bushi made of shavings from local shiitake mushrooms comes recommended as a souvenir. The restaurant features fare made from ingredients produced in Ryujin Village.

This roadside station is on National Route 169 in Yoshino-Kumano National Park. Located at the eastern edge of Wakayama Prefecture, it provides tourist information for the Kitayama Village area, has outdoor activity and sports facilities, a spa, and lodging. They also have a cultural area exhibiting artifacts from the Jomon period. Their Jabara Shokudo serves fare packed with the goodness of the local mountains, and their Jabaraya specialty shop sells woodwork and local specialty products. While it's a great rest stop on your drive through the mountains, it has so much to offer it's a destination in its own right.

this was one of the best ideas we had while in Wakayama. at 6000yen each, it isn't too expensive, and at a good hour and a half on the water - definitely recommend. do bring spare shoes because yours...
