This memorial park approximately 20 minutes by car from Awaji Interchange has facilities with exhibitions on the Nojima Fault that caused the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake on January 17, 1995. A portion of the fault pushed above ground during the quake, and the Nojima Fault Preservation Museum provides access to this designated Natural Monument. The Kobe Wall that survived the Kobe Air Raids and the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake has been relocated there too. Together they tell a frightful story of the horror of disasters natural and man-made. There is also a seminar house where you can listen to talks on the disaster. They have a shop and a restaurant serving local fare too.

What is most impressive about this museum is that it includes some of the actual roads/land affected by the earthquake so you can actually SEE how the land moved, how the road buckled. The simulated...

This science facility is part of the Uzunooka Onarutokyo Memorial Hall complex in Fukurahei, Minami Awaji City. It'll give you a visual education about the natural processes that generate whirlpools with an exhibition that links hydraulic models, a giant spherical screen, and images cast onto wall screens. They have installations like the Uzushio Slider that lets you experience the difference in sea surface height effecting whirlpool formation and the Uzumeku Circle which simulates a whirlpool that's seven meters across.

"A facility where visitors can watch the Japanese macaques which live in the Kashiwara Mountains on the southeast side of Awaji Island. The facility is located a 40-minute drive on National Route 28 from the Seidan-Mihara interchange on the Kobe-Awaji-Naruto Expressway. The monkeys come down from the mountains each morning around 9:00 and return around 17:00. Particularly in winter when there is little food to be found in the mountains, many monkeys come here looking for something to eat, giving visitors a strong chance of being able to see some. The monkeys get along well with each other and on cold evenings visitors may be able to catch sight of them huddling together in a phenomenon locals call ""saru dango"" (""monkey dumplings""). The season for monkey watching is from December to August."

"This art museum is located two-minute drive from Higashiura Interchange on the Kobe-Awaji-Naruto Expressway. The museum exhibits the works of Awaji Island native Nakahama Minoru, who is best known for his ink paintings of cats. The 20-meter-long ""Chonai no Gunzo"" is particularly stunning. Each of the distinctive cats in the painting is depicted with great richness of expression. The museum shop carries a wide range of original cat-themed merchandise including reusable shopping bags and keychains. Nakahama Minoru himself leads an ink painting class on the second Sunday of each month."

The museum exhibits paintings and calligraphy by Gyokusei Jikihara, a leading figure in the Japanese Nanga (Chinese-style painting) world. 470 works, most of which were donated by Gyokusei Jikihara, are on display on the first floor. In addition, the museum has a collection of works by artists associated with the museum and hosts special exhibitions, workshops, concerts, and other events.

Hyogo Areas

around-area-map

Hyogo prefecture stretches from the north coast to the south coast on the western end of the popular Kansai region, encompassing verdant mountains, urban beaches, and fantastic historical sights. The prefecture’s main attractions lie along the south coast at Kobe, the prefectural capital, a pretty harbor city best known for its production of the renowned Kobe beef, and Himeji, the home of Himeji Castle, one of the country’s most beautifully preserved feudal castles, perched magically atop a hill.
