This art museum is on Rokko Island, a “floating city” in Higashinada Ward, Kobe City. It stores and displays over 2,000 works of art by Ryohei Koiso, an oil painter with a connection to Kobe. It is one of the largest personal art museums in Japan, and in addition to the various works shown in the three exhibit rooms, it hosts many special exhibitions as well. In the courtyard is a reconstructed and restored studio that Ryohei Koiso used to use while he was alive.

The Koiso Museum is newly refurbished and an interesting stop while you are in Kobe. It is primarily dedicated to Ryohei Koiso who was an active artist from the 1930s through the 1960s. He spent time...

"This mansion art museum is one of the most exemplary art museums in Mikage. It houses a collection of ancient oriental art most notably including 19 Important Cultural Properties and 23 Important Works of Art collected by Ryohei Murayama, the founder of the Asahi Shimbun. The name ""Kosetsu"" comes from the pseudonym of Murayama, who was an expert in the art of the tea ceremony. The museum covers a wide range of genres including Buddhist art, calligraphy, and early modern period painting. It also holds themed Collection Exhibits in the spring and fall. The museum's Baienkai, events that combine a tea ceremony with a lecture about the theme of the current exhibit, are a familiar venue for deepening one's understanding of the museum's collection."

An art gallery located a three-minute walk from Hankyu Railway Mikage Station. Opened in 1992 using the personal assets of painter Tomie Sera, the content of the museum's standing exhibition is changed four times a year; the museum also holds special exhibitions. In addition to being an art gallery, water painting, foreign language, and other classes are also periodically held here as well as concerts. Museum tickets can be reserved using the museum's official website. In January, February, and August, the gallery is only open on Thursdays and Fridays. The gallery is not open to the general public when concerts are being held.

Hyogo Areas

around-area-map

Hyogo prefecture stretches from the north coast to the south coast on the western end of the popular Kansai region, encompassing verdant mountains, urban beaches, and fantastic historical sights. The prefecture’s main attractions lie along the south coast at Kobe, the prefectural capital, a pretty harbor city best known for its production of the renowned Kobe beef, and Himeji, the home of Himeji Castle, one of the country’s most beautifully preserved feudal castles, perched magically atop a hill.
