The authentic Russian restaurant of Balalaika was founded in 1951 and is still considered to be the forerunner of Russian cuisine. Even now, over half a century after its founding, you can enjoy authentic Russian cuisine with traditional recipes passed down over the years all at reasonable prices. Particular dishes to note are borscht (sour soup) and pirozhki (fried dough food). The restaurant is approximately eight minutes on foot from Sannomiya Station on the JR and Hankyu lines.

This famous Indian restaurant located on Sakaemachi-dori Street in Chuo Ward, Kobe City, Hyogo Prefecture has long been loved by Indians living in Kobe. The founder of this restaurant was a top class chef who worked as head chef in hotels all over India and in Hong Kong. Utilizing special ingredients and recipes, the restaurant continues to keep alive the flavors of real high-class cuisine from North India. RAJA’s specialty dish is the tandoori chicken, a chicken leg marinated in spices and cooked in a charcoal tandoor oven. A variety of different curries and other dishes can be eaten out.

Well worth a visit if you enjoy a curry, lovely clean friendly restaurant with helpful service and delicious food.

This Thai restaurant that is about a two-minute walk from Sannomiya Station offers guests the chance to taste authentic Isan cuisine, the taste of northeast Thailand, made by a Thai chef. The interior of the shop is a natural, relaxed space decorated all over with Thai accessories. In addition to standard menu items such as the fragrant and very spicy Tom Yam Goong (hot and sour prawn soup) and Pad Thai (fried Thai noodles), the restaurant offers a variety of items on the menu from dishes using fresh fruit to dishes with a light, gentle taste. The special value lunch set is also popular.

The pretty restaurant of COM COKA with its retro and colorful Vietnamese-styled interior is a place where you can enjoy real home-cooked Vietnamese food from Hanoi, in the north of Vietnam. Here you can enjoy lots of different kinds of food using seasonal organic vegetables and coriander with a commitment to using only the freshest ingredients and produce. The restaurant also regularly holds special food events known as pakuchi-o-kakomu kai especially for lovers of coriander. An authentic Thai restaurant run by a Thai chef. Located a five-minute walk from Sannomiya Station and Motomachi Station, they offer classic Thai dishes like tom yum soup and pad thai, as well as Thai hot pots and ramen noodles with herbs. There are three types of Thai hotpot, their signature item: thai suki, Thailand's most popular hot pot; Muugata, a Thai barbecue hot pot that includes grilled pork and herb soup; and Chim Chum, a hot pot from Thailand's northeastern Isan region. All of them are available year-round. Chim Chum and Muugata are made with lots of fresh herbs imported directly from Thailand. It's said this is the only restaurant in Kobe serving these hot pots.

    Hyogo Kobe-shi Chuo-ku Sannomiyacho 1-8-1
A Vietnamese restaurant in the basement of the Kobe Sannomiya San Center Plaza complex. They serve classic Northern Vietnamese cuisine in an atmosphere reminiscent of a casual Vietnamese eatery. The friendly and experienced owner was trained at a restaurant in Hanoi. Their mildly flavored dishes include fried tofu accented with coconut, pho bo made with a mix of finely minced beef and garlic, and fresh spring rolls, a popular standard. The Thang Cafe meal set comes with chicken pho, a side-of-the-day, dessert, and free seconds of rice.

    Hyogo Kobe-shi Chuo-ku Nakayamatedori 2-20-9 Kawamoto Building 1F
A South Indian restaurant across from Yamate Kasen Street near Ikuta-jinja Shrine. Look for the old-school brick facade. South Indian cuisine isn't found very often in Japan. It's prepared with different ingredients and methods from typical northern Indian food. They have lots of healthy items that are so good you may well want to eat them every day. Their popular pork-free biriyani is made by stir-frying long grain Indian rice with meat and plenty of spices.
  • Kokaen

    Hyogo Kobe-shi Chuo-ku Nakayamatedori 2-21-12
A Chinese and Vietnamese restaurant located on a narrow backstreet about a three-minute walk from Ikuta-jinja Shrine. Look for the small sign on the inland side of the Yamate Kansen Street. The shop offers both Cantonese inspired Chinese food and Vietnamese fare made to suit Japanese palates. Their popular Banh Cuon (Vietnamese spring rolls) have a rich flavor. The wraps are dough melted in water and stretched thin to steam once an order is placed. The chewy texture of the homemade wraps will leave you wanting more. Their long grain Vietnamese fried rice topped with fried green onions also gets good reviews.

Hyogo Areas

around-area-map

Hyogo prefecture stretches from the north coast to the south coast on the western end of the popular Kansai region, encompassing verdant mountains, urban beaches, and fantastic historical sights. The prefecture’s main attractions lie along the south coast at Kobe, the prefectural capital, a pretty harbor city best known for its production of the renowned Kobe beef, and Himeji, the home of Himeji Castle, one of the country’s most beautifully preserved feudal castles, perched magically atop a hill.
