Okonomiyaki is a famous Osaka dish that I hadn’t had for a while. It was Trip Advisor reviews that led me to this shop. It’s a small, old, dark busy place. Looks like a bit of a hole in the wall...

A venerable takoyaki octopus dumpling restaurant located in Osaka City’s Kita Ward which has even been featured in the Michelin Guide. So delicious they can go without sauce or soy sauce on top, many fans come from far away to enjoy the shop’s takoyaki. Made according to the same recipe as when the restaurant was founded, and enhanced with dashi stock and ginger, the shop’s good, old fashioned takoyaki is crisp and toasty on the outside and soft and viscous on the inside. The shop also has an eat-in space.

Simple takoyaki (octopus balls) without the trimmings. Even with all the hype from Netflix and a Michelin star, this cafe remains unassuming whilst the mother and son team thrive at their...

    Osaka Osakashi Kita-ku Tenjimbashi 4-11-18
This old-fashioned okonomiyaki restaurant, located in an alley behind “Tenjinbashi-suji Shopping Street”, is about two minutes on foot from Temma Station. The interior has an atmosphere of the Showa period, and a nostalgic, at home feel. The iron plate for cooking is at the table, so visitors cook their own okonomiyaki. A well-known dish on the menu is “Chigusa Yaki”, a deluxe type of okonomiyaki using a thick piece of pork meat and cooked by the restaurant staff for you. The sauce of mustard and ketchup mixed together goes perfectly with the pork.

This gem is in one of the smaller alley from the main shopping street. The shop has a very local vibe and you cook the okonomiyaki on the pan in front of you (we ordered the oysters one which is only...

Osaka Osakashi Kita-ku Shibata 1-1-3 Hankyu Third Avenue South Bldg. B2
Bubutei (Hankyu Sanbangai branch) is an akashiyaki (small fried dumplings) and takoyaki (octopus dumplings) restaurant located on the B2 level of the Hankyu Sanbangai shopping center (South Building), around one minute’s walk from Hankyu Railway Umeda Station. The superb broth used to dip the dumplings in is made using carefully-selected Kombu (kelp) and Bonito fish according to a recipe handed down from the famous Japanese restaurant Kawatomi. The menu comprises three main items: akashiyaki, takoyaki, and takoyaki gratin. Takeout service is available. When the Akashiyaki dumplings have been dipped in the broth and fried, they are melt-in-the-mouth soft, and diners can also enjoy the marvelous flavor of the eggs. Portion sizes at Bubutei are substantial, and the combination of dumplings with fresh-tasting mitsuba (wild chervil) is sure to leave you feeling fully satisfied. The food can also be enjoyed together with chuhai (Shochu liquor mixed with soda water) or draft beer.

    Osaka Osakashi Kita-ku Kokubunji 1-3-4
Takoyaki Tamaya specializes in takoyaki (octopus dumplings), the classic Osaka “junk food.” The restaurant owner, who trained as a chef in France, has refined this dish through the development of new types of pork bone broth and vegetable broth (as well as lobster broth) to cook the dumplings in. An impressive range of toppings is available, including not only the standard mustard and mayonnaise, but also more unusual toppings such as rock salt, garlic and soy sauce, and curry. It is also possible to order some really distinctive menu items, such as takoyaki in bean sauce.

This place might not look like much from the outside but the takoyaki is simply wonderful. Get the takoyaki assortment to try all the flavours on offer. Delicious!
